This wonderful thread cannot get lost! I hope the title isn't misleading people about its contents. It is the holiday music thread, folks! Listen to this angelic piece. (Speaking of, "angelic", look at the quotations in YouTube. Someone wrote that there is a saying that when the angels play music for themselves, they play Mozart, but when they play music for God, they play Bach.)

I found a new one this year that I have been playing nonstop, I have loved the Civil Wars for a few years now and a few weeks ago found a version of O Come O Come Emmanuel they have done, just lovely! I do not know how to link a song but it is on the Tracks in the snow single on itunes, when I googled it, it was the top listing for utube. Great addition to a christmas collection, I wish they would do a whole holiday album.

Great thread Holly, from one music lover to another!

I bought this CD last year, and it has fast become one of my absolute faves, hands down. I highly recommend it. I'm linking to Amazon first, they have a sample of each song so you can get an idea.

I always loved the haunting music of the late Dan Fogelberg. "The Leader of The Band", which made me think of my own beloved father, always made-and makes-me cry. I know that he also recorded "I Saw Three Ships", but I couldn't find a recording of it on YouTube. I did find a wonderful recording of, "In The Bleak Midwinter", however. I am also posting a link to his song "Same Auld Lang Syne".

Deb,

I walked down the aisle to Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring. We had a classical guitarist, and he was great.

My FIL taught with Dan Fogelberg's dad. They were music professors. So, when "The Leader of The Band" came out, my DH thought it was so cool that he knew him. It's a small world after all.

Is the southwest that small? All you gals from that area know the same musicians? I had, "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" played at my wedding, too. And Purcell's "Trumpet Tune in C" and several other pieces...but by the church organist.

Yes, the southwest IS that small, although it's just a guess. The Cruz family is from OKC. I saw Manuel (the father) play mariachi music with a group that included Edgar - his son - back in oh...1983? Then Edgar, the elder I believe - wrapped up OKC as THE classical guitarist in these here parts. People gush over him, and he is pretty good, but I'm not a huge fan for various reasons such as his personality, comments he's made, and not the least of which is I'm something of a connoisseur of classical guitarists. Mark, the younger, is IMO, the better, more well-rounded musician, who tried various incarnations over the years - rock, jazz (very good at jazz), etc, but I guess decided that this market was too small, and REALLY too small for two classical artists with the last name of Cruz, and migrated to bigger more musical parts - like Austin.

Not Mark Cruz. I found this guy from an ad he had placed in a wedding magazine catering to the Austin area.

Here he is! He is Ravner Salinas. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. We walked out of the chapel to one of his own compositions, so it was really special and personal. He hadn't even completed the work, so we were the first to use it.

He had his own website in 2007, but I can't seem to find it. He had some YouTube videos of his music . . . let me see if I can find any.

"Green Groweth The Holly" was composed by Henry VIII. Anonymous 4 did a lovely recording of it for one of their (many) Christmas albums. I also found a recording by Susan McKeown and Lindsey Horner-which I had never before heard-on YouTube. I also enjoyed it very much; it was very lively!

Dolly Parton is one of my all time favorites; I love her honesty, humor, earnestness. I think she is incredibly talented. Her version of the Little Drummer Boy, is fantastic- bursting with humility and gratitude- it reminds me to give of what I am so blessed to have to others.

Thank you for posting that, aviastar. I love "The Little Drummer Boy" and actually always loved the version by the Harry Simeone Chorale that I heard throughout my childhood. Thank you for sharing Dolly Parton's rendition. Like you, I am a longtime fan of Miss Parton.

I am sharing a version by The Cranberries.

A few years ago someone posted this song, which is very hard to find anywhere. I love it and thought I would repost a link to a video of it on YouTube. It is, "A Perfect Gift" by Natalie Hemby. Although I think it is lovely, it was never recorded for sale. Apparently it was given out free at Target one year at Christmas time on a CD with some other unique Christmas songs.

In the course of reading an article this morning, I was linked to this ministry. I have never heard of this guy, but he lists many album titles and has many vids on Youtube. Apparently they just put out a new CD, Christmas Carols On Guitar. There's a video with What Child Is This on the homepage. It's really beautiful, both to the ears and the eyes. Be sure to go to full screen so you don't miss it!

Thank you for this link, Ellen. I usually prefer vocal music to guitar, but was taken aback at the beauty of the guitars in this rendition. The clarity of the music was incredible, the effect on me ineffable. It felt really holy.

Don Francisco!! That was wonderful! I'm definitely saving that to my favorites. (I prefer instrumentals right now, although I like vocal harmonies, too.)

Remember his great Easter song, "He's Alive"?

THIS is what Christmas is about, to me. THIS is what I do for Christmas. Listen to beautiful carols and hymns, and get quiet before God. I ignore the consumerism and hoopla . . . mostly . . . and focus on THIS.

Thanks, Ellen, for finding this site and song. I'm definitely going out to get this at my local B&N.

I had never heard of Wendy and Don Francisco before, and didn't know the piece, "He's Alive". (I do not listen to a lot of Christian music, and I suspect that they play in this genre, although "What Child Is This" is clearly a classic carol.) I listened to many versions of "He's Alive", but found this live version to be really, really wonderful. Although the composition is clearly not in Handel's league, the rousing choral ending actually reminded me of how I sometimes feel when a church choir sings, "The Hellelujah Chorus" during Handel's "Messiah" and everyone in the church audience is revved up with them! Although this is, as you said, Holly, more of an Easter piece, I really wanted to share it now that you brought it to my attention.

Yes.

I'm so glad you ad Deb enjoyed this as much as I did. It is quite rare for me to be so taken/moved by a song after only it hearing it once, but this I was. I was so touched I ordered a CD for me and one for my brother for Christmas.

And Deb, yes, it's a very reverential piece. I think that's one reason I love it so....

I really like He's Alive. It does sweep you up in the mood, and the message.
