A year of loss and a new puppy...

Hello all,

I haven't really been around in a few years, but recently acquired my Grandmother's engagement ring, so I came back to show it off. I remembered how much I really like being on this board, so I thought I'd come to hangout and give an update.

2016 was the craziest year of loss I've ever had in my life - within 4 months I lost my mother very suddenly at age 66, and both of her parents at ages 92 and 93. Four days after the final funeral, my beloved dog Ripley (A cavalier king charles spaniel - I've posted him many times before) died very suddenly in my arms at the vet's office from congestive heart failure, while he was waiting for lasix treatment. I wasn't able to have kids, so my dogs are truly like my children, or the closest thing I'll probably ever have, and my already broken heart was just crushed. My other dog (a shepherd mix named Rhonda) was also heartbroken, as the two dogs were the best of friends. You can see my last thread of Ripley and Rhonda, when Rhonda was a puppy, here: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/our-new-puppy.152869/

My poor other dog Rhonda started to get really sick and when I took her to the vet, they said her anxiety was very bad and she needed an antibiotic for 3 weeks to stop her internal bleeding issues. I couldn't stand another loss, so I came home and told my husband immediately after leaving the vet's office that we would be getting a new puppy ASAP. I didn't want a new puppy, but I knew it was the only choice for our family.

So I contacted a breeder who said they didn't have any new puppies, but someone had just returned this one young dog/older puppy. I asked to come and meet him, and when I got there I knew he had been returned to the breeder to save our family, or at least to save Rhonda. I took him home that day, and I'm so glad I did. It's really hard to be profoundly sad around something so joyful, even when he's eating/chewing up all of your favorite things  . Within two weeks, my Rhonda dog was back to her old self and the puppy had settled right in. I felt guilty getting a dog so soon, like I was dishonoring Ripley's memory, but there were several signs that the new puppy was meant to be a part of our family. So, since Rhonda needed a new brother, we named the puppy Brodie (which is Irish for brother).

I have struggled through the holidays and all of the "firsts" since losing my mom, my grandparents, and my soul-mate dog, Ripley. I've never been so happy to say goodbye to a year in all of my life as I was in 2016. I'm really hopeful that 2017 will be a year full of only light and love, for me and for all of you as well. Since everyone loves puppy pictures, I'll post some for you all to make you smile today and wish you joy in the new year :wavey:

This was the day I drove home with him. Three hours in a car, with no crate. Not the smartest choice, but we made it home alive :)

Violet, condolences on your losses. Your heart took a terrible hit and I hope this year brings you an abundance of happiness. Your decision to give Rhonda a new companion was the right one and I respect your ability to put her needs above your grief. Brodie is adorable. You are a fabulous pooch mom.

Violet, I'm so sorry you had a truly awful year. Believe me many of us were glad to see 2016 come to an end. Please don't feel bad about adopting Brodie. All dogs deserve a loving home and just by the looks of the pictures you posted, Brodie has definitely found his. It is obvious that Brodie is doing his part by healing the broken hearts in your family. Furbabies are one of the biggest joys of life. You sound like a wonderful mom.

Your babies are adorable!!!!

Thank you Matata! I knew I had to do it, and I'm so grateful I did. He is an ornery, awful, wonderful, blessing  I think Ripley sent him to us to save Rhonda.

I had a similar year to yours in 2012 so my heart goes out to you Violet - you feel battered by events when they just come at you like that. I hope 2017 is healing and kind to you. Your puppy is omg adorable and he seems like he was meant for you and your family - I love his wee smile and how happy Rhonda looks to have a new brother

Violet - I'm sorry for all the losses you've had to face in the past year. I trust 2017 will be a better year for you and your family.

And I also have to say - Brodie is such a cutie! He even has a little heart-shaped nose! I'm glad he was sent your way.

Violet, your babies are beautiful! I am so sorry for all the losses you had in 2016. I hope the next year is full of wonderful blessings for you and only happiness. I have had a few years in a row like that. I struggled to get through it. There were quite a few years that on new years eve I felt like I was having a panic attack because I was afraid of what the next year would bring. That has been a few years ago for me and I didn't have that feeling this year. This is what I hope for you, that you get to the end of 2017 and it has been such a good year that you feel hopeful and excited about the next one. Blessings to you!!!

Violet, I'm so sorry that 2016 was so difficult! You've endured more than one person should have to. I'm so glad that you added Brodie to your family and that he was just the tonic needed to lift Rhonda's spirit! May he bring you many years of happiness!

Hello Violet, as dog mom I feel your pain and your joy at your new furbaby. All your dogs look happy, loved and joyful. You are a good mom. :)

I am truly sorry for all this loss in your life in such a short time, your mom was just 3 years older than I am and while we aren't young it must have been truly hard for you to deal with this. Your mom I am sure loved you and your family very much.

I saw the picture of your grandmothers ring, it's beautiful..

for this year I wish you peace in your life, joy with your fur kids and love.

Thank you so much everyone for such lovely words. It lifted my heart to read them when I got home tonight. Here is documentation of the day I knew Brodie was meant to be (I think he was only home for about 3 days at this point). The first picture is Rip and Rhonda watching TV together, which they did often.

And here's Rhonda and Brodie, only days after he came home...the hair on my arms stood up and I knew he was meant to be her brother
