Hiya. This is my first post, but I''ve been researching the PS forums for a while.

My boyfriend and I are ring shopping, and although I''ve found the setting that I love from a local jeweler, I think we should buy the center stone (a cushion) online.

I''ve found three possibilities from ERD (Mark T., whom you all seem to love!). We have a limited budget to work with.

So, which of these do you think is the best choice?

Number 1: 1.21ct, H, VS2, NO culet, depth 70.2, table 54, NO fl, polish VG, sym GD, ratio 1.24
Number 2: 1.23ct, F, SI1, NO culet, depth 65.5, table 62, NO fl, polish VG, sym GD, ratio 1.13
Number 3: 1.27ct, FL, VS2, NO culet, depth 72.9, table 63, NO fl, polish GD, sym GD, ratio 1.08

Thanks in advance!

well, I don''t like deep cushions because you lose spread - and it looks smaller than it''s weight.
So of those stone listed, I''d be interested in seeing the 1.23 F SI1. Is it eye clean?

Mark T is "the cushion man" - what does he have to say?

The other day, I noticed that James Allen actually has cushions on his site with PICTURES! (Which in internet shopping is a huge RARITY for cushions.) It may be worth browsing at least.

Scintillating...

Depends what kind of look you are looking for...
Modern vs. Anique/Vintage?

Also, its allmost imposible to give siggestions without seeing the stones themselves..., you need to see the stone, the numbers give out very limited information on the "look" of the cushion!!!

Some people love spready diamonds..., my opinion is that "cushion Lovers" prefer a deeper stone that would show a significant crown height!!!!

I think that a cushion has to incorporate a relative small table, small means good below 60%.

Good luck,

As long as you relay to Mark what you are looking for, I would leave it up to him to choose if you are not able to see the stones yourself...Mark really knows what he is doing and how to pick the most gorgeous stones!!! Let him recommend which one you should go with...
We bought my stone from him (not a cushion) and I trust him wholeheartedly.

Good luck!!

My opinion is opposite on cushion HOWEVER and this is important IMO - you''re dead on about the JA site and let me elaborate...

When you go to the JA site you should open your parameters WAY up and have a huge # of cushions then ONLY look at the cushions that have BOTH a GIA cert AND a photo - so you can compare the "flavors" of facet plot style to their corresponding pictures. This will at least narrow down the facet plot type you prefer. From there, if you right click save the facet plot that corresponds to what you''re looking for, you can send that to mark or whomever is searching for you and they can narrow down the stones you wish to see to that facet plot.

Generally from what I''ve seen, the modern crushed ice sorts of cushions are the most shallow... the 4 pavillion main cushions are in the middle and the old style cushions are the deepest - and generally the more shallow the stone, the bigger the table. an older style cushion might have a depth of 70 and a table of 52 where a modern cushion might have a depth of 55 and a table of 65. Sure, you''re gonna get more finger coverage with the shallower stone, but there are other things you sacrifice for that, one of which is not generally brilliance, so if a finger covering white stone is what you want...

and see? this is where having names for the facet plots would come in handy... if those were donut plots (my name lol)I''d go with #2 and if they were OMCs I''d go with #1.

Overall? I''d go with #1 haha it''s not too far off from mine... ALSO you really have to consider how square you want your stone... a 1.24 is VASTLY different than a 1.08.

honestly though - diagem is right - you have to SEE these and from what I understand mark isn''t in the picture taking business :/ seriously - before you go any further with mark, figure out from the james allen website which FACET PLOT you prefer. go to the bottom of the GIA cert and look at the inclusion plot but IGNORE the inclusions for this excercise and just look at how the facets are arranged and compare that to the photos of the diamonds. Figure out which pattern you like and that alone will eliminate at least one if not two of the stones above and set you in a more clearly defined direction.

ITA but with cushions he could pick a gorgeous stone and it could be a totally different look that what someone was going for. FLAVORS!!!

Thanks, everyone!

I called ERD, and the person I spoke to was great, and will send me some photos to look at.

Do I need to speak to Mark T. specifically? Or will anyone there be good (since it''s Mark''s shop)?

Please excuse my ignorance.

Thanks again!
