Below is the info my dealer has provided on a diamond I''m considering buying:

GIA cert
VS2
H color
Polish/Symmetry EX/EX

Shape and cut: ROUND BRILLIANT
weight: 1.433 CT
diameter(mm) 7.31 (7.30-7.33)
crown angle 34.5°
crown height 14.8%
pavil angle 40.3°
pavil depth 42.5%
culet 0.4%
table size 56.0% (GIA cert says 57%...)
total depth 60.3% (4.41 mm)

girdle thickness% 0.8 - 1.6 (medium)

proportion 0 Ideal

price US$9000

I have not seen this stone but I think it should be a great looking stone. Any thoughts would be appreciated? Many THANKS to those who reply!

This looks like a great stone from the specs! .7 and all Ex's on the HCA using the sarin numbers, .8 VG, X,X,X using the 57% table, which is probably the more accurate one.

Get the vendor to talk you through it (does it face up white, what type of inclusions are there, etc.) and send you some pics -- idealscope, magnified pics of the inclusions, etc to be sure, and then send it to an appraiser.

Have you seen the stone? How does it look to you?

My only concern here would be the pavilion angle.....I'd guess this might impact the fire of a stone a bit.

As long as you like what you see, that's what matters. Good luck!

Sounds like a great stone! The pavilion is slightly shallower than most of us would like to see (more the in the 40.8-40.9' range)... But that's really splitting hairs! I bet it's a great looking stone!

Hi goag,

First off this is a very hard carat/clarity/color combo to come by these days which I KNOW makes this very appealing to you. My personal experience with diamonds of these proportions is that you will have a VERY fiery diamond in direct/strong light conditions. I'm sure this gets an incredible HCA score with that set of angles. However when a stone like this with pavilion angles on the shallow side (when coupled with 34.5 crown angles) has shown me that when you take a diamond like this into more suffuse light conditions the diamond will take on a darker appearance than I typically care for. In diffuse light conditions there are 2 adverse affects that can be observed.

Diamond of the steep/deep combination generally have a glassy or watery appearance to them when observed in diffuse/office/ambient light condtions and this is reflected in HCA scores.

On the opposite end of the spectrum (shallow angles) I am finding that contrast brilliance (as observed in diffuse lights) is equally diminished and the balance of light/darks disrupted with too many darks not enough lights.

Direct light testing is a completey different story and it should do fine in those conditions.

Hope that helps.
