I just recently purchased a .60 caret for $4,200 at Tiffany''s, am I paying too much? What should I do?

Do you really want the answer to that? Can you return it?

Receipt doesn't say I can't, any suggestions would help, I'm new to this

I don't want to tell you to return it if you can't. Did you just buy it? I vote return it. I would never ever pay the silly Tiffany premium. The blue box holds no value for me. None. But that's just me.

Yeah I just bought it today, it's an I color VSI, whatever that means

dude - you must be pulling my leg I think.

Does this answer your question!

My opinion--
YOu can get a better diamond from walmart and pay 1/3 of that price.

Take it back and promise me you will never even look in the direction of that dump again.

(hate that company. hate that store. yes I mean hate)

I second going with GOG.

Holy crap, I got ripped off big time, they were trying to offer me a .75 for $5,800 too, of course I don't have that much money. Like I said before I have no experiences with this kind of stuff. I thought Tiffany's has the best diamond, that's what my gf tells me.

Actually they aren't the best anything, con artists maybe. They are only of moderate quality in my experience.

But it sounds to me like she wants the blue box.

What would be a good store to go to? I don't want to get anything online because I'm just not too comfortable with that. I live around the Boston area.

Hahahaha!

I love what the above poster wrote. Now, I don't think you could get a comparable stone at Wal-Mart... But it was a funny way to put a valid point.

You will be paying too much at Tiffany, that's for sure. But it's your decision. If you want the blue box, why not buy the ring of your dreams?

In my experience, my fiancé has bought me several Tiffany diamonds -- in the Peretti style as well as earrings. For example, the Peretti floating diamond necklace is .85 carats, ideal cut, D color and VVS2. It's beautiful -- but put that next to another diamond I have from a jeweler in Houston and it's pretty much the same thing. Only -- my poor man paid ten thousand dollars for something he could have saved thousands on. I have learned my lesson.

It's not like I wear the blue box. LOL.
Whereas I can wear a beautifully cut diamond and we can use the thousands saved to better use. I'd rather not fund Tiffany's marketing campaign anymore.

Oh by the way, is a .60 caret small? I don't want people to think that I'm cheap if you know what I mean.

Online really is a good place to look. I know you are wary of that but if you go through one of the pricescope vendors (GOG is a great one as is whiteflash) you cannot go wrong.

I know GOG is in New York, not far from you at all really. A friend of mine up there just bought his ring from Blue Nile. He couldn't be happier.

hehehehehe..."best con artists"

What info did they give you to prove it's the 'best' diamond? Nothin. Nada.

Check out the bscope and the light scopes on those puppies I showed you. You can also get the same from some other price scope vendors.

So, my calculations: you paid 3000 for the diamond and 1200 for the box

Lots of people think that... but you're lucky, you found Pricescope!

Just my humble 2 cents...
If you decide to keep it (or they don't offer returns), then look at the bright side... you probably got a beautiful diamond (most of them are quite beautiful) and GF will be thrilled.

If you can return it (or choose to), then you can learn about diamond buying here and make a much more educated choice, and get more for your money. And GF will still be thrilled!

BTW, VS1 is the stone's clarity grade, it means "very slightly included"; I color is in the near colorless range (the range starts at "D").

Nope. Its not. But we are trying to explain that because you are paying an astronomical markup for the name, you can't go much bigger without it being obscenly overpriced. For the price you paid you could get nearly a full carat in a better color.

Tiffany's accepts returns for a full refund up to 30 days. I know this because I have returned. I saw the light.

Drive, don't run, and return it (unless you KNOW she wants the tiffany name stamped in her ring)

Have your girlfriend do some reading over here. Perhaps she'll change her mind about Tiffany's when she realizes that the same $4200 can buy her a 1.00 carat ideal cut H color VS2 diamond from some of the vendors here. Perhaps even larger if you went to an eye clean SI1 clarity.

I know buying online makes a lot of people nervous, however there are top notch, well respected vendors here who can get you the most bang for your buck. Some of them will even ship the diamond to an appraiser so that you can see what you are buying first.

I guess I'll let her decide, if she wants a bigger one and doesn't care about the name, then I'll return it, she has 30 days anyway.

Just to make you really wonder. I found a signature series ideal cut diamond that is .623 I color VS2 clarity for $1483. Yup, a top of the line beauty for under $1500. Imagine what kind of setting you could put that puppy in with the difference in the price for the Tiffany ring.

Welcome to the club. . . Most newbies here were not comfortable with buying online when they first came to PS. 1-2 weeks later they are educated and know how to minimize their risks and get the best value for their budget.

Using an independent appraiser is key to buying with comfort. Most of the vendors will send your pick to a local appriaser where you can view the stone together before buying (no risk). Use your credit card to add to your comfort level.

One common route is to buy the stone online and get the setting done locally.

Here is a 0.79 winner that leaves you $1.5k for a setting $2961S

I don't think anyone would think you were "being cheap" by purchasing an e-ring under a carat. Rather, you're being very thoughtful and generous by putting so much thought into your future wife's ring.

It's all relative... You know your wife-to-be the best, but the size and quality of her ring should reflect your current lifestyle. That's the right size.

Congrats, by the way!!!!

Unh112,

Definitely check out Romm & Co. on the Brockton/Easton line. I live in the South Shore in MA and my fiance was SO impressed with them - they took him under their wing and guided him along the way, keeping in consideration his price range. It's a small family-owned business that's been around for 100 years, and they carry the most beautiful diamonds. I would definitely check them out if you're in the area. Best of luck!

WOW, all that money for a pretty blue box~!
eek.gif

I would take it back. I would almost bet your girlfriend would rather have the "bling bling" of a bigger rock for that price....

ABSOLUTELY, in my opinion. You bought a name, not a diamond!!

yeah, i am so not liking "the tiffany" these days either.
rolleyes.gif

but, if your GF is set on the blue box, then you have to do what you have to do. if you can present the alternatives to her and see what she'd rather have, that might be your best bet.

I don't think a .60 is small at all- I wear a .60 square radiant on a size 6.25 finger. I think it's a good size for me- just about 5 mm square. I don't find my fiance to be cheap, nor does anyone we know- they just think it's a beautiful thing given with love- and THAT is what really matters
