Hello PSers,

I always find it fascinating that the experts on this forum can guess the types of stones with few pictures... Here I am asking for help too.

I have inherited this ring a whole back. And has been guessing what it is and wonder if it's worth getting a cert done. Very few facts available to me. It was bought in Asia in the early 1980s. It changes color dramatically.

Please share your opinion. This can be fun.

I would guess color change garnet ... Definitely worth taking to an appraiser!

Vanadium doped synthetic corundum.

So many....when did they sell them - was it a fashion in the USA???

This! Reasons?
1. Large size
2. Very clean
3. Looks to be in great condition (no nicks or abrasion, meaning it is a durable gem)
4. Dramatic colour change, from blue to purple.

agree with marlow. However, the ring looks antique. the design remind me of some old ring carved by 1970s siamese or balinese goldsmith. I hope someone can confirm this

I cannot confirm what the setting might be, but from what I can see, it looks lovely with great detailing and I would love to see more of it. :))

Agree. Nice setting -- I wondered if it is high-karat gold. Whatever, it is pretty & looks Asian.

Agree with Marlow and Chrono. I have the same stone but in round. There is another post that shows a set (earrings and a ring) with the same color stones under "alexandirite' IIRC, the set was from Mexico. But your setting is beautiful and looks like 18K or even higher.

Could be a sapphire as well. Surely worth checking.

Hmmm, id say it is a synth corundum. Does appear to be high karat gold like many people are speculating. Possibly 18k? I would say this piece was created sometime between 1960's-1980's, large synth color change stone rings were very popular as early as the 1930's, but i believe this to be a bit too old for this ring. Does have a very south pacific flair, reminds me of something you would find in Hawaii today. It wouldn't be too far off to say Indonesian, or somewhere around there. It would be helpful for some side pix to show more of the design!
