The mother also has a history of mental illness. We then have to question if she had a full understanding of the damage she was doing. In either case the child should be taken away.

OMG! I feel sick :nono:

I didn't read that part dragonfly...interesting.

Gosh, sometimes I think that somewhere, someone screwed up when he made breeding so easy. And other times, I think it's a miracle that babies can even be formed and come out healthy at all.

i dont care if it violates human rights, some people should be spayed/neutered.

This is one of the saddest cases I have ever read.

http://www.tampabay.com/specials/2008/reports/danielle/

In this case the mother also had an extremely low IQ and even today denies any abuse or neglect. She had to give up parental rights but never served her jail sentence. :angryfire: Very sad but Danielle's adopted parents prove there are angels out there.

I'm at work and can't see it - what is it?

Oh Tacori, I went to the link and saw the pic and I can't get myself to read more about it. ;(

For the record, (and I know you know this Tacori, I'm just making a joke here), I didn't really want to talk about child abuse (i.e., read more stories!)

WTF. i hate people. :angryfire:

TGal, fair game. YOU started the thread ;))

Monkey, it is about a feral child. Here's the right link to the story for later (if you want) http://www.tampabay.com/features/humaninterest/article750838.ece

STOP READING IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE (not sure why would you be in this thread though)...

Danielle was left in a small room/closet with no interaction or affection for her first 7 years of life. When the officer found her she was in a soiled diaper, could only drink from bottles, dirty w/ bug bites, and severely neglected. The window was broken, the room dark, and it was filled with old, dirty diapers. She could not speak and showed no emotion (not even pain when they put in an IV). She only weighed 46 lbs. She has never been to school or a doctor. Didn't know how to react to toys. There is no way to REALLY know but testing showed there was nothing wrong with the girl and the doctor labeled her with environmental autism. Eventually she was adopted by an AMAZING family. Danielle will never be close to normal but she has progressed developmentally.

I'm not surprised there's such stupidity in the world. This mom is clearly missing a few brain cells. I have family members who are potheads, and their kids all have various birth defects. I can connect the dots.

sugarpie, THAT is horrible. I am so glad the little girl survived.

After reading these stories, I just want to leave work right now and go home and hug my little guy.

Fertility is so wasted on some people. Is it counterproductive to want to punch this lady in the uterus?

If I didn't have a kid, I'd punch my own uterus...sometimes I am freaked out I brought a kid into a world with so many sickos. But I think harder and realize most of the people in the world are good.

I remember reading that story a few years ago, and googled to see if there were any updates on Danielle. It looks like she's doing really well: http://www.danisstory.org

Though I've never felt the need to have my own children, stories like this make me seriously consider fostering and adopting.

Me, too. ;( I just want to snuggle him forever so he knows he is loved.

I found another article with the story written instead of video and just...oh my god. I don't understand people, I really don't.

Selkie, she is doing well but it makes me wonder what she would be like today had she had a loving caretaker. I forgot who did the study with the monkeys where they created a wire "mother" and on one they put a towel, the other had a bottle. The baby monkeys ALL cuddled up to the mother with the towel not the one with food. Animals crave comfort and love.

Some people are just ghastly. Gives me the chills to read about these things. Why do you not need to take a test to prove yourself worthy of bringing a child into this world?

I remember a case of abuse here in town shortly after Trapper was born, and spending a long time rocking him and just kissing and hugging him and whispering how much I loved him and feeling so bad for the poor baby who hadn't experienced any of that. Thankfully the baby was adopted and is doing wonderfully.

My father spent 25 years doing policy work on child abuse. So it has been something I have been aware of for as long as I can remember. There were always books on prevention, posters, and other educational items in the house as he often had a roll in creating these things. Though my life, I have herd some pretty horrible stories. They tried to protect me from it, but I remember once he had to investigate a case where CPS sent an abused child back to his parents and than he was killed. I accidentally saw pictures. But that did not disturb me as much as how upset my father was about the whole thing. I don't think he was able to investigate a case like that again.

I myself has seen some pretty horrific cases that can rival the ones other posters described above. I am dealing with a case of neglect right now. I picked the child up because he wanted to see a picture on my wall. I was just told how horrible his behavior was. When I picked him up, the biggest smile came to his face, and his little fingers were clinging to my shoulders. I realized the child was attention starved and it really broke my heart.

The first years of a child's life are really the most important for long term developmental outcome. The need to be loved, they need an enriched environment to learn in. If they don't have these things, they literally loose cells in their brain and will not reach their developmental potential, as well has have some long term social and emotional problems.

Here is a picture I used in a lecture. It compares the brain of a normal 3 year old with an average head size (50%) with a child who has been extremely neglected.

That is truly tragic.

Reminds me of "Genie". I believe her actual name was Susan Wiley. She was found sometime in the 70's. Doctors had told her (mentally unstable) parents that she was mildly retarded and they really took this news to the extreme and had her isolated in the home, chained to a toilet, locked in a crib at night. She had minimal interaction and was barked at to discourage her from speaking. Completely devastating story. It's a terrible shame that this goes on in the world.

I learned about the story of Genie in college. Her story really got me interested in child development.

Sometimes I wonder if there shouldn't be a form of regular check in for children with mental retardation or other disorders to make sure that the parents are still able to handle their situation properly. That makes me sad.
