Hi everyone
35.gif

I''ve been lurking here for around a year now and I''ve trawled through many many threads regarding Tiffany''s. I''m looking to get engaged next year. All I know for now is that if I go for the Tiffany setting then only the original will do for me. I know that I can get a better stone etc and have it set in a replica but I''m only looking to get 0.75ct max regardless of price because my ring size is 3 and in London engagement rings are not all that big to be honest. Added to the fact that non of the replica''s are good enough in my opinion.

Now... my question is, if I do end up going for Tiffany''s can somebody tell me what their settings are like in terms of how they are executed? I looked in Tiffany''s the other day and I couldn''t really see anything wrong with the several rings I saw, but then again I''m not really good at picking out things like this. The reason I ask is because I''ve read several threads where people have complained of crooked prongs and settings (couturequeen17 is one who springs to mind). Another poster also said that when they were in Tiffany''s they looked at several of the classic settings close up and since she has a sharp eye she noticed crooked prongs, flaws etc in ALL of them. This is worrying me slightly since I know I''ll be paying over the top at Tiffany''s so I would at least want the setting to be perfect since that is what I covet the most.

Sorry for the long post but can anybody tell me about what they have personally seen regarding the classic solitaire?

Thanks

Hi Kitty

Just giving you a bump so that hopefully some Tiffany owners can chime in for you. You know, I would think that Tiffany on the whole would provide an excellent product to their clients, maybe take a field trip to Tiffany ( Bond St I think) and have a look for yourself? I would think when you do get your ring that if you weren't happy in any way that the company would go well out of their way to make you so.

Lorelei thanks for the bump!! I was in the Tiffany concession in Selfridges the other day and I had a look and personally I couldn’t spot anything wrong but then again as I said I’m not good at picking out flaws etc. I don’t have the eagle eye many PSers seem to have lol. Even though the Tiffany ring is the first ring I have truly liked, lately I have become more and more disenchanted with it (and worried) after reading posts from other users.

I’d love to hear from anyone else.

I don''t own a Tiffany piece, but that''s one of the main things I''ve heard from others who do on here, how nice their settings are.

KittyBling- You and I could be best PS friends! I hear you completely on the Tiffany thing. So as far as your question goes, I have read that here myself about the prongs but I've never seen it in the store. Especially on the Tiffany Setting. I've tried several on on more than one occasion and I happen to be incredibly picky. ESPECIALLY about prongs. I believe with the engagement rings they pay extremely close attention to those sorts of things.

My only suggestion (as this is what I'm doing) is gather information or write it down about the setting you most want and make note to be sure the prongs are correct if you are so worried about it. Hand that off to the boyfriend or place it in a place where he will find it. If you do get one and something is off, you can take it to Tiffany's and they will fix it for you until it's exactly right according to your taste. Even if the knife edge isn't prominent enough, they will give it more of an edge for you. So I think you've got nothing to worry about!

Many people have the illusion that what you get at Tiff's is what you get. Which is completely untrue. They will work with you on your ring for whatever reason. Hope that helps! And stick around...because we could have some fun discussions!

Thanks for the replies Ellen and Dreamgirl!

Dream, I''ve read in a previous post of yours where you said the same thing about the knife edge being altered if you wanted it to. Does this mean that they could make the thick part near the diamond slightly thinner? I thought that they didn''t alter their settings in anyway. At first I was hell bent on having the Tiffany ring but now that I''ve been lurking around PS for ages my mind is slowly changing lol. I still love the Tiffany ring but there are soo many other beautiful solitaire settings too. It''s a good job I don''t need to decide just yet! It''s going to take me forever to make up my mind

I own a Tiffany pave etoile engagement ring and while it doesn''t have prongs on the center stone it does have a lot of pave work which after many years is still looking really good. I have never had any quality problems with my ring.

I love Tiffany's! I own two e-rings and a bunch of wedding bands, among other jewelry pieces from them.

All Tiffany diamonds come preset in their various settings, the settings are all different in that they are made especially for that diamond size. The width of the bands are different sizes to match the different diamond sizes. For example, a 2 carat has a slightly thicker, heavier band than a 1ct. For this reason you will notice that the smaller diamonds have a sharper feeling knife edge than the larger stones, since smaller stones means narrower band widths. Channel set diamond rings get larger side diamonds as the center stone size increases.

The others are right, there are definite nuances here and there with their settings, I have seen some diamonds set higher than others, some prongs are therefore longer, some are not set perfectly symmetrical, some are set quite low....the good news is that they have wonderful customer service. They will definitely do everything they can to make you happy with your ring. First pick out the diamond you like, then look at the setting, if there is anything you like changed they will fix it for you for free, they will not alter it completely however, just fixes like uneven prongs, lower or raise the diamond etc. They will change the diamond to another one of their settings if you want, but it comes with price differences accordingly. For instance you like a diamond that is set in a solitaire setting, but you want it in the channel side - for the difference of the channel side, they will reset it into that for you. This process takes some time though because it is sent to their headquarters and they decide what size diamond channel set band will go with that size stone, they will not set a 1 ct stone. into a setting that they use for 2 ct. stones though (for instance channel set sides for 1 cts. will have diamonds of .40ish tcw, whereas they set their 2 cts. into a channel band of .70ish tcw., they will not set the 1 ct. into the .70 band and vice versa) The overall finished product has to remain consistent and look consistent with their line.

Hope that helps you out....of course I encourage you to go to Tiffany's and tell them of all your concerns and ask all your questions, they are the true experts that will be able to give you the most concrete answers and explanations. (Plus, it's quite fun to see all the different diamonds, - their settings are standard size 6 to begin with, so if you have a size 6 finger, you'll really have lots of fun - I am size 6 and I think that is how they got me...I'm a goner as soon as I walk into one!

Hi! I have several Tiffany rings, and the settings are excellent. I have never had problems with loose stones or poor workmanship.

Thank you for your posts shopaholic and Madam Bijoux, they were very helpful! I have seen your rings and you both have a beautiful collection

I have a Tiffany ring, and the quality (of my ring at lest, and many others I have seen) is flawless...some will disagree.

If you want a Tiffany, you should have one!

I have a few different diamond rings from Tiffanys, and have never had a problem with the quality. Their custom invitations and stationary though, is a different story!

But I will say that after being on PS, I am not impressed with the designs anymore- I rarely wear the rings I do have, unfortunately. Now I am less enchanted with timeless looks and prefer very unique, intricate work. So if you are already getting unsure of the Tiffany setting you like, and are intrigued by others on PS, you may want to take some more time.

The last thing you want is to pay a premium for the plain Tiffanys setting and then decide there is a James Allen (or someone else) design you like more!

LG

Ugh I knew that! And I mentioned it to a friend I was with at Tiffanys, and the snooty saleslady told me no, all the settings have the same width. I was like,

That said, I didn''t notice any quality control problems with the classic settings the few times I''ve been to look and try on (can''t comment on the others, since I was only looking at the classic), but I''d definitely go and try them on, especially any ring you might want to purchase, and if it''s not perfect, I''d definitely ask Tiffanys to fix or modify if they can.

Yes, you are correct and that salesperson was completely wrong or new....but just looking at the rings you can see it, so I don''t understand why she would even say that. I was explained this in the NY store itself because I wanted a daintier look on my channel set band solitaire but was told that as the stone gets bigger, so do the band widths.....and I looked at A LOT of rings.....
