Hi everyone,

I have been lurking around here and eagerly reading for the last couple of weeks, and now I am ready for some of your expertise to come my way!

I am looking to get a yellow gold brilliant cut solitaire in a 6 prong setting. My original engagement ring is beautiful but my wonderful husband has offered a new ring for our 10th anniversary!

I would really like to wear my new ring with my original engagement ring, but am also open to wearing it with my band and wearing my original ring on my other hand.

All that back story to ask:

1. What do you think a .7-1ct solitaire would look like with my original e. ring?
2. What do you think of buying online from Whiteflash/James Allen or Blue Nile?
3. Does anyone know of a very straight 3mm thick 6 prong yellow gold band? I cannot have anything that tapers or it will not sit flush with my current ring.

I am hoping that since I am after a fairly 'standard' ring that online might be an option as I am in Australia and it looks as though a similar ring in a retail store would be double the online price.

Thanks in advance... looking forward to your responses!

I'm not sure about size of stone, .7 is pretty substantial IMO and should look good, but you could probably go and try it on at a B&M to see. Buying online is just fine as long as you know what you are doing but I have never bought a diamond online so others will be able to help more probably.

Having just bought a solitaire setting myself, I would check out American Set Co on Ebay for settings.

I know saying "Ebay" can sound sometimes a little sketchy but I just bought one and it was great quality, and if you do a search on here, you will find that others have been happy with them as well. They have some very plain settings on there for very reasonable prices. Not sure if it is what you are looking for, but quite a few to choose from and several plain solitaire styles.

The one I just purchased -- their Trellis setting -- is very substantial. It's about 4.1 mm across at the top and very solid; when I took it to the jeweler this week to have my stone set, she asked me if it was platinum and was surprised when I told her no, because of its weight. IT does indeed feel similar to a platinum setting of similar style I had tried on at a B&M. Very nice quality. I would post some pics for you but it's at the jeweler now having the stone set this week.

Bonus: I was also able to make an offer for the setting slightly lower than what was advertised. They did not accept and counteroffered me, but it was still somewhat less than the original price. I paid less than $300 all said and done, and would imagine that a similar setting at a B&M would go for at least $500-600, potentially more, based on quotes I got for very similar pieces of similar style and weight.

All in all, it was a great deal.

I know Blue Nile and other online stores also have settings.

Another place to look is the Natural Sapphire Company. They get mixed reviews on here for stones/customer service, but I'm sure the settings are fairly standard if you just ordered that, and they can be engraved free of charge. You can search just the settings and put in your stone's dimensions and they will show you the price for just the setting for that particular sized stone. They have a LOT of solitaires to choose from, and some of them are very stylish. The only reason I didn't purchase one from them was mainly price--I was trying to keep my setting under $250-300 max.

Your first ring is rather wide. You probably need to try on some .7 and 1.0s to see what goes best with your original.
I think I would turn your original into a RHR and wear the new one with your gold wedding band.
2. What do you think of buying online from Whiteflash/James Allen or Blue Nile?
All very reputable companies. Blue Nile is a drop shipper so they dont have pictures of most of their stones. Whiteflash and
James Allen have pictures.

I didnt see any that didnt taper in some way.

What is your budget?

I'd go with James Allen- whiteflash- hey- give IDjewelry a call- they can work with a budget and have access to most if my more settings than local stores have.

I would still with a visit that can provide images and ASET and IDEALSCOPE or with someone like IDJ that has a great price beat program and can call in stones for you and evaluate them or you.

Unfortunately, I can not longer recommend American Set. Please see my recent thread in Colored Stones. The mounting had porosity issues and the jeweler was unable to set the stone. I will be returning mine.

Hello and thanks for your replies, it is harder than I thought to find a ring with no taper, but I guess that is because most people aren't working with a wedding band when they buy their engagement ring!

I will keep hunting!
