I have been reading posts here for a while and have decided to ask a question myself.
I am interested in a 2 carat Intense yellow GIA diamond but can not decide what ring to put it in.
I like the idea of a solitaire ring but I spoke to Michael at thediamond.com and he thinks without side diamonds for contrast a yellow diamond looses a little and he suggests putting some side diamonds on it in the least.
I looked at some rings in stores and they all do tend to have some sort of white diamonds around or near the center yellow diamond.
In your opinion is it a "must have" case? I am set on the diamond but would like some un-biased feedback on the ring issue if possible.
I am looking at this diamond and these two rings as options.

Thanks.

I personally love yellow diamonds but think they look better if there is some yellow gold also in the ring. Many times you will see mellee in yellow around the center stones or side stones, and just that portion is set in yellow. Check out Michael Beaudry and some of the other PS vendors and you''ll see lots of examples of these. Do you like the idea of yellow or rose gold mixed in with it?

I like to keep it simple.
These rings both are 2 tone with yellow gold for the yellow diamond and platinum the rest.
What do you think about side diamonds compared to a solitaire with a intense yellow stone.
Thanks,
Ryan

I love the idea of side stones. Do you know what your GF wants? What are you planning on doing for a band? Are you planning on doing one?

i really think the yellow diamond needs the contrast of the white stones. you can still have a simple ring with white diamonds. a yellow center just doesn''t do much alone, you need some contrast.

the second ring is stunning.

I absolutely think a solitaire (the one you linked is great) is fine for a yellow diamond, expecially since it's intense. Just be sure the basket is yellow gold.

I wonder if the color might stand out even MORE in a solitaire than it would in a three-stone mounting...less glittery distraction!

Thanks for all the help.
It seems there are both schools out there on the idea.
I think my girlfriend would prefer the solitaire ring since she kind of a minimalist but who can tell, right?
I asked her mom and some friends and they went both ways on it too.
I have a few days to decide on this so I better get my act together.

Regarding the band question.
She has a band she got from her grandma that is not connected to anything that she loves.
Its just a plain heavy rose gold thing. I think it will look good next to the yellow diamond though.

I think that if you''re going to have a yellow diamond, make it obvious. I once saw a bezel set solitare with a yellow diamond... the bezel around the stone was I believe 18k yellow gold and then shank(the actual ring part) was a white metal(I would assume white gold but it could have been plat). The ring was beautiful. If you don''t want a bezel than I would still do a yellow gold basket/prongs and the rest white gold.

Whatever you choose, a 2ct fancy intense yellow will be stunning!!

The rose gold band with that ring sounds gorgeous.

I vote for side diamonds. I agree with the jeweler, it adds contrast.

That said, either option is beautiful and that diamond will POP. Go with what you and your girl love!

Thanks.

I think it''s a preference thing - I don''t think I''d like the contrast myself.... but I don''t think that rings that have it are unattractive either!

I take it back - if THOSE are the 2 choices I *DEFINITELY* like the 2nd one better by a HUGE margin. I really do NOT like that first band with that stone.

If the whole ring was yellow and the band was thinner and a bit more.... attractive somehow, then I think a yellow solitaire would work. It wouldn''t contrast but a white diamond in a plat band doesn''t contrast either.... but I def don''t like that first band with the yellow stone.

I''d just get a yellow gold ring with the yellow diamond then because otherwise you''re mixing three colors and that could be a bit much.

I purchased a yellow diamond ring from thediamond.com a while back and it was great. Real stunner!
I had a picture of it somewhere and would love to post it here but I can''t find it now. Maybe later.
With that center diamond you can''t go wrong no matter what it goes in!
Your lady is one lucky gal. I hope she appreciates you ..lol

Cehra that''s a good idea-to do yellow gold, yellow diamonds and then mix that with the rose gold band? Is that what you are thinking? I would love that, but I am wondering if platinum is more popular with newly engaged couples?

If I were to see just a yellow rock on someone all by itself, I would probably think it was a gemstone of some sort, not a diamond. Not sure why, but that is just how I feel. The second setting is gorgous and I greatly prefer it over the other.

Does she know she is getting a yellow diamond?

I have to say I am surprised by that price for the diamond. My regular D diamond (not yellow) of almost the same size was just about the same price. I thought yellow carried quite a premium.

yes! I think the 3 distinct colors might be... too much contrast

I think if she really wants the rose gold ring I would do a solid yellow gold ring with the yellow diamond... it would be unique but would coodinate. as for popularity - popular schmopular LOL

I''d love a yellow diamond with trillion sides, like this:

...just thinking out loud here.. I wonder what a rose gold basket would look like with the yellow diamond?...It might still enhance the diamond''s color, but then would better match the band...

Of the two, I''d prefer the plain band, but I like the one Annie posted best.

I agree popularity doesn''t matter, I''m jsut wondering if there''s a chance that his GF may prefer platinum, and that yellow gold may be a personal preference. I''m a throwback from the yellow gold crowd and I love it-but I know I am in the mirority!

Hi! My fancy yellow (1.18 carat radiant cut) is set in yellow gold with a yellow micropave halo around it, and it has G color trilliants set in platinum as the side stones with G color micropave halos around the trilliants. A well cut 2 carat intense yellow could easily stand on its own and wouldn''t really need any side stones.

I would like to thank everyone for their great input.
I have decided to go with the solitaire but with a twist.
I talked to Michael at thediamond.com and we decided to make the ring out two tone 18k gold and not platinum to save a bundle of cash. Thus if I dcide to change it down the line to a ring with side diamonds I will not have spent so much on the platinum. I don''t think my girl friend cares about platinum vs. gold anyway. I think this is the best way to go.
PS RULES !!!!!!!!!!!!!
