The first would probably look a tad bigger with direct comparison, not so much without - you say these are Princess? Do you have the proportions for these diamonds and any images Siz?

Very off l/w ratio though. Are you sure you want to consider these?

The L/W ratio on the smaller stone would be VERY noticeable to me. If you''re really going to buy a princess that isn''t square, then I would opt for the larger stone which won''t look as skinny.

Those are not square, they would be most elongated and noticable....

I''m aware that the stones are not "perfectly square" I''m not concerned about that. I actually prefer the slight variation.
I actually already own the 1.70, as it''s the center of my 3 stone engagement ring. I was considering buying the other one for a solitaire and wearing the three stone on my right hand. I just wanted them to "match", and would actually prefer the BIGGER stone in the solitaire, but its too much work right now.

I don''t think I would notice the size difference unless they were put side by side and I was asked directly.

If both are from the same vendor, ask them to send you photos of them side by side from top and side view so you can "see" size difference and shape yourself

I had a somewhat similar dilemma as you when we bought our first stone, and i made the jeweler put the 2 stones together to do a side by side comparison. The difference was really small and it wasn''t apparent unless i put them side by side together. If you are concerned, why not play around with the setting of the solitaire (slim band) so that the smaller stone looks slightly bigger?

I have one stone here in front of me. The other would be an internet purchase, so I can''t do the side by side thing until it gets here, I just don''t have a concept of when you begin to notice a change in size, KWIM? Perhaps I should learn to be patient!

I wouldn''t notice the difference in size probably. However, as others have mentioned these stones are slightly off-square and this probably would be noticeable. What are the specs on these stones? There is a possibility that they may not be well-cut and this is most important in terms of sparkle and overall appearance.

It''s really hard to say. I think the make of cut will have much more influence on whether or not they look ''matched'' than the dimensions.

I guess I am unsure why everyone is so obsessed with the perfect square princess. It''s just not a big deal to me. My 1.71 came from Whiteflash and was given a 4 star rating. The other sites who were selling my diamond listed it as "premium". Out of square does not= poorly cut. I believe it''s all a personal preference.

By the very nature of a Princess cut they are supposed to be square, just as a Round Brilliant should be round, not out of round.
What is important is that you are happy.

Well said PP. But Siz, the important thing is that you buy what appeals to you!

I think everyone ends up buying what they like..I guess I never understood why people always say that on here" buy what appeals to you, or it depends on what you like" I think that''s a given... I didn''t ask what other peoples preferences are. I know this is going to come across wrong in print, because I have noticed that around here, but I don''t mean it in a snotty way, just an observation

I guess I would understand that if I had asked about the ideal shape of a princesses, but I didn''t ask, and I was a bit put off that I got all of these "You know that''s not a perfect square" comments, when that wasn''t what I wanted to know. I simply wanted to know how many mm''s gives the average person a visual difference in size.

No, no worries Sizzle. As PP said a Princess is expected to be a square shape, and that is why we point out any deviance from that as a routine thing when someone posts the info on a Princess. I wasn't sure where you were coming from, so that is why I said to buy what appeals to you in case you felt you 'had' to therefore look for an absolute square, that it isn't the case. If it isn't a big deal to you then not having a perfect square Princess, I just wanted to make sure you didn't feel pressured that your preference was wrong, as it isn't. It is just something we always point out when advising on Princess shapes concerning the diameters if they deviate from a square shape. And the bottom line is always buy what appeals to you as with any poster, that is also standard advice as we don't want anyone to feel that they should adjust their preferences according to what we think they should be, or what we prefer.

Thanks for the feedback though, we can use this to help us advise other posters better in future.
