I have always wanted to go "digging for diamonds" in Murfreesboro, AR. I''m sure this is exactly one of the most renowned places that diamonds come from but it has brought me to a question that I''d like to ask here.

My BF and I are planning on trying to go when the weather gets better and I''m really hoping to find something (even if just something tiny to keep as a souvenior). But in the off chance that I do find something big enough to have cut and put in the ring I''m wondering about doing that.

So my question is if you were to go and find something big enough to cut would you have it cut down to use for your ering even if it wasn''t of the best of qualities or go ahead and buy one for the ering and use the found one for something else?

I think they find only a few diamonds a week there...and most are pretty darn small. So I wouldn''t count on that as a source for a ring...

but I think if I personally found one there, I would consider a lot of things before making a decision on what to do with it. How big is it? What color is it? How bad are the inclusions? And most importantly what will it COST to have cut?

Hi,
I''m planning a trip to the Diamond Park in the future. My husband is even up for the trip (which really surprises me!) and we day dreamed about we could find. My husband pondered what''d we''d do once we found a 5,000 ct blue diamond! lol

If I did find a stone that is of excellent quaility, I''d have it cut into a diamond, BUT, if it wasn''t the greatest (and what defines, for you as as not the "best of qualities" may be different than mine) I would have it cut for a RHR or a pendant. But, I''ve never looked into the cost of cutting a diamond, so that''d be a factor too.

I am married and have my diamond, so unless the stone I find is big and amazing, I''d have it cut into a RHR. I am not looking to replace my current stone even though it''s small, so the stone would have to be immaculate for it to replace my eng stone.

I say the same, it would depend on the potential of the rough as to what I would do, what shape it would be best cut into etc etc, it might turn out it would end up being cut into a shape I wouldn''t want for an e-ring...

Lorelei I didn''t think about maybe it wouldn''t be able to be cut into the shape that I''d want. Hmm...

I''m not getting my hopes up that I''d even find anything that COULD be cut but it sure would be nice.

Here''s one they talked about in the news. It was something like 2.6cts. A 12 or 13yr old girl found it and one of the people at the park said it was an ice tea colored.

It says they usually find on average about 2 diamonds a day. I suppose that doesn''t include the people who don''t know if it''s a diamond or not and don''t tell the park about them.

Me too. And I really plan to go some day.

I don''t know about diamonds but the yield on coloured gemstones is about 20% to 30%. So a 2 ct find will end up being 0.5 ct if you are lucky. I''d rather buy my own e-ring and save the special find as a specimen since I expect most will not be clean or set it in a cage type of pendant.

How exciting! I doubt you''ll find one tbh honest considering the odds but how fun to go digging. I''m sure you''ll have a great day weather you find one or not.

Chrono, yes you do loose a lot when cutting diamonds or that seems to be the case with the ones they have posted on their website that have been cut.

What do you mean by "clean"?

ETA: Chel, I am very excited! I can't wait for the weather to get nice again!

By "clean", I mean natural inclusions like feathers, clouds, naturals, etc that may not able to be completely cut out. I would love to go digging just for the fun of it. Sort of like an archeology picnic day. Finding any sort of gemstone or diamond will just be the icing on the cake.

A went a while abck, and after a long day of digging, didn''t find anything. It turned out nothing was found on the day we were there. Most of them seem to be brown or yellow colored, and it''s rare that anyone finds them over a carat or so. They do have 1.1ct D IF ideal cut stone on display, it looked like it needed cleaned...

This is another that was found and set in a ring uncut. (I couldn't find a better picture of it) They also list and show pictures on their website about one of the more famous diamonds found with a 0/0/0 grade.
