I am interested in a Cartier pave band #40084937. Its a very wide pave band with stepped back edges for lack of a better description. Sorry I cant find a picture that is copy-able. It comes in 18k yellow and 18k white. I would prefer platinum. I am wondering what it would cost to do a custom similar version in platinum because 1)I know Cartier wont do it and 2)I am not sure I want to pay that premium anyway. Thoughts?

I believe you could get it custom made for a bit less than what you would pay at Cartier

This one? What is the cost difference? I don't see any major original design elements with this ring so this is one circumstance where I might copy it (I'd probably make a few changes though to make it a bit original). But usually I am in favor of getting the original.

Sky is the limit! Two things that might be nice is making the stones on the sides a different size than the ones in the center. And something that immediately came to mind was rounding off the edges or something. The lines of the ring are pretty soft and then the edges just are too abrupt IMO.

bgray - It''s nice to see you post! I haven''t seen you around in a while.

The ring is so pretty. I always like to go the original route unless there was something I want to change. In your case, you want platinum so why not go custom and save a few bucks. But personally .. I would still get the original Cartier :)

thanks! yes i agree regarding going with the original. i am wondering...do you prefer the yellow or the white? i am a platinum gal but the ring is very pretty in yellow

Bgray,

Very tough to answer your initial thread title, since it is so laden with subjective and personal considerations.

Cartier makes incredible jewelry, from both a qualitative and an aesthetic standpoint.
There is however a justifiable premium associated with their "name" for those who are willing to pay for it.

Assuredly, Cartier does not have a patent on creating and selling high quality jewelry of style and substance. Imitation is the best form of flattery and there are endless companies who create equally beautiful and high quality designs inspired by the original. They cannot however, duplicate/replicate the Cartier name brand.

A significant purchase such as this, is just as laden with the "emotional/psychological" considerations and ramifications as perhaps the "rational/practical" considerations.

Indeed, you are not purchasing a bottle of milk or a cuisinart. As to which variable should be the ultimate motivating factor, there is no right or wrong answer, just the one that works for you personally.

Some people are willing to pay more for "the name" even if they know they can get the same quality or better for less. Some people don't need the 'name' and are simply motivated by the consistent level of reliable quality signified by the 'name'.

If they can achieve their objectives and spend less money in the process, that's a perfect situation.

I'm not sure anybody but you can accurately advise you on the questions of your own heart.

Best of luck!

Wow Judah-you really summed that up nicely. I actually dont really care about the name IF I am working with someone that can provide a product of equivalent quality. I have requested the price from Cartier and am waiting to hear back from them. Is this something that would be fairly simple to make in your estimation? What do you think it would cost to make this in platinum?

IMO, they can''t duplicate the original Cartier piece. Period. I know this is hard for many people to accept, but if you want the original Cartier piece, get it, or get something similar but different.

I know --but i said similar--its really that i want platinum or I would just buy the Cartier

In this case I would go with the orginal. I was in love with the signature Cartier style engagement and ring and my FI had the budget to get the original, however I decided that because it was more the style (4 prong solitare)I wanted. In that case it was better to get a similar copy so more bang for our buck. That said- I am also in love with their LOVE collection and have a bracelet and a necklace from them. Certain pieces are so uniquely Cartier that a copy would never do them justice. Also there is the most wonderful giddy feeling, at least for me, every time I get to open that red leather box

I am usually not a yellow gold type of girl but that ring is gorgeous in yellow gold!

i am not too much a gold person either but its exquisite in the gold-the white is sort of sterile

I agree - the ring is so lovely in yellow gold. I adore the look of white diamonds against yellow gold.

Neatfreak: We have similar taste. What would you do? Yellow gold Cartier or platinum custom?

yikes it is a pricey little devil...........i dont like it that much!

any have a good guess on the cost to have this made custom?

if i were to go custom...what do you think about a band with this design (honeycomb) but set with diamonds? Or do you like the cartier better? Also I was hoping to use ACA melee but how would that work if i didnt have Whiteflash make the band?

I felt the same way about my Cartier Trinity ring. There are companies that make copies, but I wanted the original and I''m glad I bought it

Has anyone ever seen the honeycomb motif in jewelry? Is it Victorian or Art Deco?

I don''t know what it is, but it''s gorgeous! And I have to agree about the gold, if gold looks nice against your skin I would go with the gold, it makes this design (and I think the honeycomb too) just pop.

And as far as I know you couldn''t use ACA melee unless WF made the piece...I don''t think they just sell them. But I could be wrong so it''s worth it to ask.

what would you think about the honeycomb with diamonds set in the "combs"

bgray,
Have you looked at Roman Malakov? My friend and I passed by and they have a number of the type of band you want.
