I'm not sure how I feel about this...

My fiance (yea, he proposed last week! ) asked JA to use a 6-prong head for my pear (it is actually 5 regular prongs plus a v-tip). They said they didn't have a platinum head so they had to use 14k white gold.

I am allergic to white gold. It makes me itch & swell. I don't think it will bother me just being on the head, although the head does touch my skin where they soldered it to the shank...I can see 2 faint lines on either side.

I guess the part that really bothers me is that I wanted platinum for 2 reasons...one was the gold allergy, but the other was not having to rhodium dip it every so often. The ring is very delicate (2mm knife edge), so I worry about the soldering a little.

My fiance sent JA an email yesterday asking what the oprions are...

That is very odd as I would want a single solid continuous cast setting. I hope JA will make what you wanted originally.

I think they may have been trying to accomadate my request for the 6 prong head as they said the ring normally comes with a 5 prong head (4 regular prongs plus the v-tip).

But I definitely would feel better with a solid, one piece ring since it is so delicate.

If you're having this much trouble with their setting which it seems you are just buy the stone and set it elsewhere?

We already own both...it's on my finger now. :P

We're contemplating returning it to have it re-done in all platinum (with the possibility of a different head).

I understand in your situation that they used the 14K head because they didn't have the platinum. I also understand the other issue is your allergy. I and my friend both have platinum bands with 14K heads of backs. My (not my eC) but my original pear had the white gold prongs as they felt 14K was stronger than the platinum and protect the stone better (and in 27 years it has never needed plating or to be dipped. I have alot of white gold and I have never ever had to dip anything) and I am 54 years old.

My girlfriend has a 7 ccarat pear and the lost 90 lbs so she has the back of the ring open and close and the jeweler felt again that having a 14K closure on a platinum band would be safer for the opening and closing all the time with the ring.

I know that your situation is slightly different but the mixing of the two medals is fine and works when needed. If you feel that they cheated or lied that is totally different.

If you don't like how it looks or it is uncomfortable that is different.

You have to be happy .....

Platinum is almost always preferred over gold for prongs. For one thing, gold prong tips wear away over time and they are more brittle. It is very common for solitaires to come in two pieces with the head being attached to the ring. But I feel that that was unacceptable to do without your prior permission. I would absolutely want a platinum head on a platinum ring. If they couldn't do it, I would have just had it set locally.

Just to clarify...

JA told my fiance that they had to do the head in 14k wg so they didn't do anything sneaky. Because he was trying to get the ring before our vacation, he said yes.

so then personal choice i am sure he will take it back order the platinum one and exchange with upgrade in $$$$ for platinum prongs. So it is your call I guess.

I don't think it would be more $$$$. My fiance paid for a platinum ring with platinum prongs.... ;)

Then heck send it back and get the platinum........price of platinum 1458 troy ounce and 24k gold is $1386 (14K is onlyh 58.5 % of pure) get you moneys worth lol unless you can't let go of your ring for a week or two lol

Well if you are allergic to white gold and it touches your skin, you need to get that fixed asap. White gold allergies can worsen over time with exposure.

(I'm allergic to white gold too.)

Then by all means get a platinum head for your setting.

I agree send it back find exactly what you want long term.
