Would a 7-mm round garnet fit into a 6.5 mm opening?

It is a basket setting. 6.5 mm. 18-ct gold. Do you think there will be any problems with setting a 7-mm garnet in it?

Presumably the setting is for a round also?

Presuming also that it's a prong setting rather than bezel?

If so, it's likely the stone will fit BUT it may well sit higher than a 6.5mm stone. The prongs may also need a bit of lengthening but it's impossible to say without seeing the stone sitting in the setting.

Basket settings typically have less taper with the prongs being more straight up and down. This means that to fit a larger stone you have to bend the prongs out slightly to get enough room. If you don't mind the prongs curving outwards a little bit, then yes, it should fit.

It most likely will fit the opening but is the depth of the current setting sufficient to accommodate the larger stone?

Hi Crasru,
Half a millimeter can be a lot to adjust for. It is always best to have a stone that really fits the mount. A lot depends on who is setting it. If it is by a real smith then sure, it is no problem as things can be stretched, ground out etc. If someone is going to set it with just a pair of pliers at home then it it is likely it will not work well.
Brands of settings and measurements of stones can also be a determining factor. A 7mm round may actually measure a few tenths off either way which could make or break the situation. Best regards, Lee

This is just to thank everyone for your advices. I did not win that setting, just let it go halfway because I was betting on something else, but it is nice to know for the future!
