Hi everyone! I am new, having just been a lurker in the past. I have a question about the durability of my setting. Some background: when my wonderful husband and I got engaged, we were quite young and so he was not able to afford a diamond. I understood and was just happy to be marrying such a great man. I lived with a little citrine on my hand for quite a while. Recently we have been blessed with good jobs and he made it clear to me that he wanted me to have a diamond. It bothered him that he had not been able to afford one before. I let him take care of it. My only suggestion was that I wanted some color, saying that some side stones might be nice. I never expected him to get me what he did....a stunning blue diamond, 1.5 carats, round brilliant. Wow. Well, the stone is amazing. I can hardly take my eyes off of it. However, he had it set in one of the pin head settings where it is set into the shank with a pin and then soldered on. I have never owned a ring like this. All my other rings are cast in one solid piece. I am a pretty active woman and when I look at the setting, I worry that my lovely diamond could pop off the shank, never to be seen again. Not only would this be downright tramatic but it would also be hard to find a replacement stone. He said it took him some time to find my stone since most blue diamonds are treated and he was not interested in that. Am I worrying needlessly? How tough are the pin settings? I don''t know much about soldering so this is a real mystery to me.
