what brand of cosmetics do you recommend? (particularly foundation)

I use Prescriptives and they are no longer going to be around. I loved their flawless finish foundation.
Luckily, I have no wrinkles, but I do have some broken capillaries and a tiny bit of discoloration in areas and the foundation I use is lightweight, buildable, and covers any imperfections , not to mention it matches my skin perfectly.

So what do you use and why? Based on your recommendations, I may just make an appointment to get a makeover and see for myself. Thanks in advance!

LOL at your title !!! there are only about 20 women (regular posters) over 50 on PS. the avg PSer is 29 yrs old.

Perhaps they lie about their age! And besides you are a man. Why are you answering my post? Huh?

i use Dermalogica For Old Bags...

ok - it''s not called that *precisely*, but it''s their ''anti aging'' line, and i say embrace it for what it is.

and i''m not *quite* 50 yet, but so close it makes no diff. and i''ve been on the anti-aging thing for years now. and i''m not depressed about it.

i''m not.

i''m NOT.

I AM NOT!

(well ok, maybe just a tiny little bit...)

I went into our local Ulta store this summer and talked to their manager about my changing skin, and the problems I was having with the foundations I'd used over the years. She pulled out and tried a couple. I ended up buying a brand called Cargo. It evens my skin tone, doesn't make me oily or settle into "little lines or creases." The reason I went to Ulta is because they have trained cosmotologists, but since they're a retail store, they're not trying to push their own brand. It's worked out well for me. Give them a go!

sorry socool - meant to say - the dermalogica is *very* good and i've been very happy with it.

i want to see a dermatologist shortly tho and get some retin_a stuff and have my face sanded back and revarnished (or whatever) a bit. i need surface vein removal from the harsh winters here, and i've decided to have my

the dermalogica is great. period.

I liked their foundation, also.

My dermatologist sells me the moisturizer, cleanser, retin, and other things I use.
For makeup, she recommended
Physician''s Formula. It is sold at drugstores.
It is very inexpensive, so you could try it and it would be no great investment if you decided it is not for you after all.

My mom & her sisters are in their 60s, and often get mistaken for early 50s. They all use Clarins Extra-Firming Foundation and swear by it. My mom always uses drugstore products, but this was recommended to her once by an aesthetician when I treated her to a facial, and she''s been faithful to this one high-end product for years now. The website describes it like this:

A fresh, radiant complexion that looks years younger with this age-control foundation that offers a gentle skin lifting action. Its rich, fluid texture is easy to apply and ensures a luminous satin finish. Fine lines and wrinkles are minimized and the complexion is smoother and more even. Skin tone remains the same under any light. - Age range: 40+

my mother at age 85 still has great skin! she has never used anything trendy or expensive. additionally, she always had dry skin.....which usually shows age signs first. she has always and to this day still uses Pond Mosturizer. go figure. i swear i''ve seen women my age [well beyond the age 50 qualifier for responding to this thread] who''s facial skin looks older than that of my mother. i believe she also cleanses with a cold cream.

personally, i''m still struggling to find a good product and mostly use products from the health food store [weleda rose line] as i have an allergy to EDTA which is in many of the lines you all have recommended. i also see an ethestician for a facial once every 3-4 weeks. i have oily skin and my pores tend to clog. i have to change my routine and products with the season as a result.

i can say that the changes your skin is going to experience are only just beginning if you are 50........

I declared war on my face not too long ago, but ya know, it''s a battle I can''t win.

Foundation - for now it''s a very lightweight Olay product that is color mixed with moisturizer. Not good at covering though.

I just had a Derm Dr. tell me I have Melasma on my face. Heck, I thought it was just age spots! She prescribed Tri-Luma cream
to lighten it. But that stuff is major meds and very rough on your skin. Not sure I will continue.

Sunscreen is a must. Everyday, no matter what.

Check out the forums at Essential Day Spa. Those ladies know their stuff.

Whitby - I checked out the Dermatologica website and their treatment foundation sounds like something I would use. I found a couple of spas near me that carry this brand and I will check to see if they carry this foundation. Too bad they do not carry blushes, eye shadows, and lipsticks/glosses.
PS. Glad to see you back here on PS. Welcome back!

Upgradable: The Cargo brand also seems promising. Unfortunately Sephora is the only place closest to me that carries it. I will have to plan a trip out to the Willow Grove mall one of these days to check it out.

Pink Tower: I''ve tried Physician''s Formula before and the only product I use is their eyebrow pencil in brown/beige. It is the only color that matches my eyebrows exactly. I amd not too fond of their other makeup.

vespergirl: I checked out the Clarins website and in addition to the firming foundation, I may want to try their super restorative foundation as well. They''re in a mall right near me and I will probably check them out soon. What is nice is that website says that they can give me samples after I visit their counter.

movie zombie: My mother used Ponds religiously, too. I use Abolene cream on my face every night. It takes off every smidgen of makeup. I do rinse my face after using it and never use soap on my face. I only wash my face once a day and that is at night.

bebe: Luckily, I don''t have melasma on my face; just a couple of slight discolorations that I can cover with concealer. I did see a segment of the Dr Oz show(I think it was Dr Oz) and he had a woman who wears medical makeup. She had a port wine spot on her face and the makeup covered it completely. Thanks, I will check out the Essential Day spa forums.

I am over 50 and I used to use Prescriptives until a friend turned me on to Bare Escentuals. It is fast and easy to use, you can build the amount of coverage you desire, and it stays on beautifully. I apply over a light moisturizer.

Ditto! I love BE. I also use pure Emu oil as a moisturizer and since I started using it the fine lines have disappeared.

Do you find it matches your skin tone very well?

Ok so where do I find pure Emu oil? do you have a private stash?

Yes it was surprisingly easy to find a match. It is really forgiving makeup.

You might like Laura Mercier''s tinted moisturizer. It''s lightweight and buildable. I''ve used it for 10 years and just love it!

I''ll ditto Whit being back - whoohoo!

I use Olay products over night and Bare Escentuals during the day if I wear any cosmetics at all. Everyone guesses I am about 10 years younger than I am. I swear by the Olay.

I use Clinique''s Dewy Smooth makeup. It goes on beautifully and has SPF 15 in it too.

Ha ha, no I get it from the Vitamin Shoppe. It''s made by Longview Farms and is called Pure Refined Emu Oil.

Well....I feel like I fall into the close-enough category. I certainly ain''t no 29!

I was/am still using Prescriptives - I stocked up right before Christmas and should have enough foundation for a year or two. Dang them for going out! I''m like you soocool, I''m going to be spending the next couple of years looking for a replacement.

I use that foundation mixed with a glimmery lotion by Revlon. I bought it on a lark way back, thought it was too shiny, and then one day realized it matched my foundation AND helped it spread better - I have oily yet dry skin - how''s that for weird - so I use their matte foundation but want it to spread more easily. Now of course, they don''t make that lotion anymore. Grrrr! I find the mineral makeups leave me looking....weird...cakey? So I''m going to be sticking with liquid no matter what...

I''ll second or third the love for Dermalogica. I use only 2 of their products regularly - one is a toner mist, the name of which eludes me at the moment, but it makes you dewey and smells heavenly, and their Daily Microfoliant. OMG, that stuff is amazing. You think it has not enough grit to DO anything, too creamy, but you can use it daily, scrub with no real abrasion, and your skin will just feel like silk when you''re done. I had it used on me during a facial at The Ten Thousand Waves Spa in Santa Fe. Mmmm!

I''ll be keeping up with this to read recommendations too...

I stocked up on stuff too from Prescriptives, but I don''t hold onto foundation once I have opened it for more than 6 months. They are still going to sell their custom blended foundation on-line. I was thinking of visiting the Prescriptives counter before they go away permanently and get a custom color. I just don''t know how this foundation measures up to the Flawless Fiinish. And I use a primer before I put any foundation on my skin and it just looks great. Even with moisturizer I just don''t get the same results as I do with a primer.

I think what I am going to miss the most about Prescriptives is that I had found the perfect color match for my skin without being too pink or yelllow.

I just turned 50 in October. Not my favorite day, but I think I am over it
32.gif
I have used retin A for about 10 years now. Not every day, but at least several
times a week. I think it is the best bang for the buck product out there. It is about 50 bucks a tube (at Costco). I have been using Bare Escentuals for about 15 years
and have seen great improvement in my skin over the years because of it, and the retin A of course.

I don''t need much moisturizer because my skin is still kind of oily, and the only sunscreen I use is the 15 in the Bare Escentuals. But I recently tried Boots, #7 Intense
serum and I am kind of loving it. It is from Target and only about $20.00

I was using LA Mer eyecream, which I loved, but was oh-so-pricey, then tried Murad Renewing Eye Cream. It is $73, but addresses under eye puffiness as well. I liked
that a lot, but it didn''t seem to last as long as the La Mer.

I am always on the look-out for products that perform well but cost less, so keep the good ideas coming.

You ladies over 50 are my favorites!

Foundation of choice is Revlon''s Age Defying in Normal/Combination. It completely disappears into my skin, but manages to brighten my skin tone. To get a bit more coverage, and tone down the shine, I use Maybelline''s PureStay powder foundation as my powder on top.

I''ve used all the expensive brands, and tried every drugstore variety. These work best for me. Everything else cakes, yellows, or melts away. Or goes on kabuki-style.

Most overrated: mineral powders. None of the brands I''ve tried have ever made me look like the tv infomercials. They just sit there on top of my skin, looking like colored flour.

Is the retin A a Costco brand?

For moisturizer I use the Avon Anew line for the 50+ woman. A little goes a long way with the mositurizer and eye cream and I have been very happy with it.
For sunscreen I use, Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch SPF 55. It goes on nicely and then I put a little moisturizer over it.

BTW, happy belated birthday.

Soocool-it is not a costco brand per se, but it is generic. You need a prescription for it, but my regular gp has no problem prescribing it for me. She usually gives me
quite a few refills and I buy every one of them!
30.gif
It is not a quick fix, but it does make a huge difference over the long run. It does cause a bit of peeling, but I
exfoliate to get rid of it and my skin seems to handle it well. It really takes away the dullness as it is helping your skin cells turn over faster.

Good to know. I always thought you have to see a dermatologist for a prescription. Next time I am at my gp''s office I will ask him if he would give me a prescription.

Is your prescription a certain strength?
