Windowing on Round Brilliant? Dark Shadow

Hi Everyone,

I was looking at photos of my ring and noticed in the photos that there's a black spot in the center. When I look at the ring IRL I see a tiny black shadow. It's an eye-clean Si1 so I can confirm it's not a carbon spot. It's very noticeable in photos and driving me nuts! Jeweler says it's a reflection from the mounting. What is causing this? Thanks in advance!

I figured it out. A steep pavilion angle is causing dark area under the table.

While it might be a reflection of an inclusion the most likely cause is something on the pavilion.
If it is a new ring or recently worked on it is likely polishing compound.

It is in the wrong location and the wrong shape for that to be likely.

I concur with Karl- we're seeing dirt on the stone- a steep pavilion would not create that sort of dark area.

I don't know about what this jeweler used, but my grandmother used a compound that needed to be saponified for removal. She used a dawn+ammonia+hot-water solution (you had to get the water over 82C) or a really evil-smelling product that came in a big green gallon bottle (but, I refused to use that - so Dawn mix it was). She'd rub off what she could, then soak. Then a soft toothbrush. Repeat. If the stuff was left on for too long, it took lots and lots of time and work. Guess who did all that scrubbing? {this was wayyyy before ultrasonics}.

If this does not work, could you take it back to the maker?

Sometimes a professional has to take a toothpick and actually rub the worst off then steam the rest off.
If it cant be reached that way then steam and more steam until it comes off.
In a closed setting it is hard to find it sometimes, because it might not be right under where you see it from the top.
That is often the case.
It could also be under a prong.
Please do not try this at home.

DJ- if it's really new, I agree- go back to the seller and have them take care of it.

My fiance bought the ring in Philly and we live in FL. Steaming didn't work. I'm going to a buy an ultrasonic cleaner and see if that works.
