Hi,

I am planning to buy a diamond online. I live in the UK and can''t resist the doller exchange rate PLUS the online saving. I will have to pay around 37% import (import duty + Value Tax) but still looks good. I would like a really flashey diamond and I am happy to pay the premium for a better cut but will this mean that its will definatly be a flashey stone??? Could I get it home and be dissapointed? What do the numbers say to you......

Laboratory: GIA
Carat Weight: 1.28
Color: F
Clarity: VS1
Shape: Emerald
Depth: 64.3%
Table: 63%
Polish: GD
Symmetry: VG Culet: N
Girdle: M-STK
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 7.74x5.27x3.39

Views...?

it looks nice! but there are no guarantees.............

Two things you could do. One you should and one to avoid.

1. Have the stone sent to one of the expert appraisers on Pricescope to be sure it is rightly graded and PRETTY before you commit.

2. The second thing you could do is illegal, so I would not suggest you do it, however we have seen others evade or avoid these onerous taxes by traveling outside the country and wearing it home. I sure would not recommend it.

The number 1. suggestion would make what sounds like a very nice diamond a very safe purchase.

There is no standard for these cut grades, so some are more informative than others

You must have seen quite a few ways of cut grading by now. In theory some are "blinder" than others.

The page bellow lines up most types of presenting diamonds online. Various shops use one or another, and some purists would just line ''em all up. Makes good refference, even if none of the emerald cut diamonds presented there is the one for you. Sure that''s a storefront, but it makes one great, totally free (sorry Jonathan...) of charge "Diamond User Guide" as well, IMO:

Most of the graphics are self explanatory.

Further notes on what cut grading standards are made of are to be found under Knowledge/Fancy Shapes on top of this page (about numbers mostly) and at Ideal-SCope.com / Using... / Fancy Shapes (helps "read" diamond optics, they say).

Hope this helps

WOW, So much help so soon!

I have been researching for about a week now (fairly constant!) and have been using www.gemappraisers.com to help with the cut - this one comes out nice....

Thanks for the advice on the other sites and methods I will have to take look tomorrow.

SO how will it work oan the US independent inspection to get a view on the cert match and "pretty" factor? DO I buy it and have it posted to you there? DO you post it on or could I come and collect it from you after the appraisal? How much does this service cost? What if you tell me its not a great diamond?

Thanks,

G/VS2... well, all that info does not seem close to "buying blind" to me. Besides, there is always the return policy out there.

The stone looks 'no-excuse' good, IMO.

Ah, why of course...? Its 2000 dollers cheaper than the first in my post - could I tell the difference? (could she...) I was wondering what the pictures on the site told us (the black and white pics and the red pics). Would the inclusion in the middle notice? Price aside, would the original spec stone likly come up better buying blind (ie over the net and with no lightscope or brilliancescope pics?)

If that would be easy (of feasible) to tell, I bet no one would bother with the ''scopes

There is a rather long story baout what the pictures are supposed to tell. Most of it can be found in the tutorial here or at GoogOldGold (GOG) and others, for that matter. Ideal-Scope.com makes the faster read on that particular tool. GOG explains what the BrillianceSCope does.

Can the sellers of the F/VS1 provide any further details about the stone at all? The few numbers sound good, but there is quite some distace between that and a detailed impression about the stone, as far as I know. You can always call it in and use the return policy, unless the seller makes it easy providing more info.

I have been asking for Crown height and if inclusions reach the surface or are visable in table for three days and also a "view" on the appearance but no joy yet - I suppose it is the weekend. What should I be asking them if I call (long distance) it is in their "ideal" range can it be anthing other than a nice stone? Should I be so worried if buying good C''s or not? I could probably only afford a 0.9ct F VS1 or a 1.2ct GH SI in the UK for the same money so the top one looks like a bargain. Is it as much of a risk as it feels?

Don''t think so

The "risk"feels different each time... A few things are meant to help: the return policy (even with the tax hussle, that mean money back if not pleasantly surprised by purchase), this forum, and knowing what the grades mean should prevent "screen shock"

the first one--the second is too deep

Hi Lucky

Many merchants here will ship diamonds to your appraiser of choice providing they are known and have a good reputation without you paying for it till the analysis is done.

Once the stone is examined and it is the stone you want then you pay the seller and the appraiser can ship to you directly.

All you pay for is the shipping costs and the appraiser''s fee to check out the stone and send you the reports.

Talk to a few appraisers. See what they can do to check the stone and what kind of reports they will render. That should make your selection easier and with the quality verified so you can have peace of mind

I have to agree with Windowshopper. The first EC holds promise while the second one from GOG, although very pretty, is too deep at 75%. With such depth, the 1.2ct EC actually looks smaller than what it should look like (almost like a 1ct EC).

Hi,

So were on the first - here is another (buyers wobble) the crown is 10.4% - I bit smaller but a better cut? Views

Laboratory: GIA
Carat Weight: 1.21
Color: D
Clarity: VS1
Shape: Emerald
Depth: 60.1%
Table: 60%
Polish: VG
Symmetry: GD
Culet: NON
Girdle: M
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 7.47x5.44x3.27

I''m not too hot on crown angles being less than 12%. The EC will have a flatter look and less fire.

Ahh, first one sold. Views on the 1.21 second one?

crown height?

I am not sure what the cut at 12% does better than 10% crown height. I would now, with a Gem practicalconfortable to make a cut (at 12%, at 10% or at 5% for what that matters) if there are many choices around, but it would be a pitty to avoid a good, single candidate just because, IMO.

But again, Chrono's EC is a very nice one !

From all around here, this 1.21 D color sounds the nicest (not deep, not a large table, no thick girdle and a bit more info).

i agree the d 1.21 looks awesome a 10.4 crown is very nice

No doubt the numbers on EC#2 1.21ct D vs1 sounds very pretty. Nice table and depth. Medium girdle is perfect. Colour & clarity are very safe. I'm just a sucker for higher crown height because I'm very crazy about fire.

I hope you'll keep us posted on when you do call this stone in for your review.

Ana,
Thanks for the compliment. I'm still so crazy over my EC myself.

Thanks all.... the 2.21 D VS1 is going to Dave at gemappraisers.com for his view - fingers crossed its a good one!
