I got back my 1.10 ct F 8* and it is in a platinum superbcert Tiffany mounting, nice and low and I love it.

I showed it to someone who made a remark I didn''t really hear all of about the 4 prong vs. 6 prong head.

I have had it awhile and if I want ot ever reconsider resetting it would 6 or 4 make it look biggger? rounder?

Are there any other disadvantages or advantages to either?

what looks better to your eye?
I was never questioning it till this conversation and I wish I heard all of it. (or none of it!)

Please help me figure this out.
The stone is, as I said, 1.110 ct, F color, I clarity (eye clean) and it looks fine in the Tiffany setting (which Superbcert had the only patent on at that time, before Less got the okay.,

Is there protection at issue also?

I appreciate all your help in this!!!
TIA

50% more prongs makes the diamond 50% more secure.
if one prong of four is loose diamond can fall out.
If one prong of six is loose diamond less likely to fall out.

Six prongs means the diamond is less likely to get chipped, but less of the diamond is visible.

To add to this also 6 prongs can make the diamond look a little more round, its a matter of personal preference plus his thoughts on security.

Some feel 6 prong tend to make them look rounder, it''s all personal preference on that, and yes 6 can offer more security. I like 4 prong myself, and between my first stone and my 1.40 upgrade (3+ years), have had no trouble losing the stone in 27 years, and I even knocked one of the prongs on my upgrade pretty good in the beginning. If the setting is well made, and you check the prongs frequently with a loupe (once a month), with a professional check every six months, you should be fine.

A setting that sits the diamond higher can give the illusion of it being bigger.

it''s all personal preference IMO

I personally love the 4 prong look and got the 4 double claw prongs on my stone

I think it’s mostly a matter of taste. As pointed out, 6 is 50% more than 4 but with the 4 prong heads the prongs themselves are bigger and less likely to bend. Buy what you like and buy an insurance policy to cover the risks. That doesn’t change the risk of loss or damage but it does make it someone else’s problem.

That said, personally I like the look of 4.

I think on a high quality diamond you want to see more of it. On mine I chose 4 prong (petite trellis setting) and love it because I can see so much more of the diamond. The 6 prong is nice and pretty, but I think you want to see more of the sides of your diamond. I agree 6 prong perhaps can make it seem more round, but since you dont see the sides I think 4 prong for a solitare is perfect, especially if you have a nice side view. Just more to see and love!

Agree. I love 4 prong.

its a matter of preference. I like the round look of 6 prongs, but I bought a fake ring with double prongs and absolutely love it, so that is what I have is a double prong four prong look

It depends on the design of the setting. Some designs look better with four prongs, some with six. It''s also a matter of taste. Which looks better to you?

Personally I feel that 6 prongs makes the diamond look slightly bigger and definately rounder than 4 prongs. To me 4 prongs seem to make a round diamond look slightly squarish.

I''ve had my diamond set in both a 4 prong and a 6 prong head. And let me tell you, it looked bigger and better in the 4 prong. It''s about a carat, and the 6 prong just engulfs it and makes it look small.

I wholeheartedly agree with Laila!

As a jeweler I am a huge proponent of six prongs when they fit with the design, or at least heavier four prongs as in your lovely picture above. I have replaced way more diamonds that were in four prongs than I have that were in six prongs. I have had more than one six prong come in that were missing two prong tips, which is a guaranteed lost diamond with four prongs. Two have even come in with three tips gone, which is really down right obstinate procrastination by the wearer. (Might even have been hard to convince the insurance company that waiting for the fourth to come off, which it nearly had it was so thin, was not negligence on the part of the wearer.)

I like the look of 6 delicate prongs or even 8 over the look of 4 heavier prongs on a round.
The worst is 6 heavy prongs,,, blecky!

I actually think double 4 prongs are the way to go (provided they are done well). Technically you have 8 total prongs, but you don''t have all that metal surrounding your diamond!
