I have a .79 vvs2 h color round brilliant diamond which is supposed to be an ideal cut according to its gia cert, but I was wondering why there is a reflection of a miniature diamond inside the diamond? I have gotten several jeweler''s opinions on this and they tell me that the stone was cut too deeply. Does anyone here have an opinion as to why this reflection might be in the stone? I would appreciate your thoughts.

thank you

Hi Roxie,

Can you post a picture ?

What is the depth of the Diamond ?

What you are describing is known as a "table reflection".
It gets bigger as the pavilion gets deeper (or the table gets larger).
I placed the ray right on the edge of the little patch in the center of the stone - you can see about half the light is coming from the table and about 1/2 from the crown facets - the light from the very center - your small diamond in a diamond - comes into the stone from the table. You can test this theory by taking something of a very bright color and moving it around until the color shows up in your diamond in a diamond. It will be seen on the opposite side of the stone.

Hope this helps

Hi Brian,

Thanks for responding. Garry''s picture shows it really well. I didnt have the cert in front of me when i did the initial post but the diamond is 5.90 - 5.93 x 3.67 mm, 62% depth and 57% table. I still do not like the table reflection and i would not have chosen this stone but I dont know much about jewelry :) I just think it isn''t attractive at all. thanks again for the response.

Hi Garry,

Thanks for responding and for explaining this to me. I would not have chosen this stone had I been along for the purchasing trip :) I had actually picked out another stone and someone (who shall remain nameless) thought he could get a better deal on one (looks like the better deal came out of the quality of the diamond cut ;) )

But, I dont know much about jewelry, I just know what I like and dont like. I really appreciate your help and honesty.

Actually this pattern is one of the positive indications that the diamond is cut to the best proportions Rosie.
Think of it as a diamond you got for free :)
