Why I live in Southern California

I laughed for 5 straight minutes! My DD asked "Why are you cackling evilly?"

I said "Because I can . . . "

:sun:

We have our own set of issues down here though. I'm sure we'll get a few mudslides here soon. Oh and my 15 mile drive to Pasadena today is most certainly going to take me an hour and a half.

You would think that big pickup truck at the end would have done a little better. The car at 0:47 knew what he was doing, he should give lessons to the rest of Spokane.

I cracked up when I saw that big black macho pick up truck floor it right at the end, sending up a huge cloud of black exhaust.
Gunning it is just the smartest thing to do when sliding on ice. D'oh!

Ouch! I was feeling for that first pedestrian... watching it all unfold and absolutely unable to do anything to stop it!

Oh, I agree. Snow, ice, and black ice are problems I don't need.

I thought the guy in the truck gunning it was gutsy. He did everything he could to get out of the way. This just made me sick to
my stomach. After living in Lake Arrowhead for 9 years, I have had my share of ice slides on mountain roads. It is the sickest
feeling in your stomach to know there is little you can do to prevent it. Thank the Lord, I am a flatlander again. There is nothing
better than Lake Arrowhead in you rear view mirror, or any snow or ice for that matter.

I LOVED the Fed Ex guy! He's like "sorry, guys, but I have deliveries to make".

Wow! Why would you even attempt that hill seeing all those other cars piled up?! Black ice is no joke!

That is really sad. I don't see what is funny about that? That stuff can be really dangerous.

My mother has a broken collar bone and a broken wrist bone to prove it.

It makes me sad to see people laughing at a lot of other people's expense. We get landslides and wild fires in s. cal, but i would never laugh at people who lose their properties, or say they deserve it because they "choose" to live there. Maybe they just couldn't get their car out in time.

That attitude says a lot. Happy F*in holidays.

I showed this to my hubby. He was laughing, telling me what those drivers should be doing. And I quote, "I know how to drive in those conditions. I'm from North Dakota!" bwahahaha.

I didn't read all of the posts. Of course this really isn't funny. So if I offend anybody here, I'm sorry.

This video has been around a couple of years. I imagine even some of the people who were involved in that mess are able to laugh about it now. :wink2: And really, many of us have been involved in some sort of collision that involved mostly damage to our cars and pride but no lasting or life-threatening injuries, which in all likelihood is what happened to the people in the video. It's not at all comparable to homes lost to wildfires of landslides... nor was anyone implying -- the title of this thread notwithstanding -- that any of these drivers deserved what happened to them. That said, some of them probably could or should have chosen to stay put instead of venturing out that day, and losing control of your car in icy conditions is sometimes unavoidable, and it is one of the hazards of living in places with cold winters.

I agree totally.

If we were witnessing people being injured or killed, and people were laughing, then I would be offended. In fact, I would be appalled. But the opposite is true. We're watching people in an unusual situation (like bumper cars when we were kids) who weren't harmed at all. I don't believe the "laughing" comments or the title of this thread were truly meant in any mean spirited kind of way.

I've lived in the NE. I know all about winter driving hazards. Trust me, when people can drive away from a very slow speed pile up with some dents, that really doesn't qualify as a tragedy.

Tragedy is when people have real accidents, like when your mother hits black ice and wraps her car around a tree, and comes limping home from the hospital, bent over in pain, with two broken bones.

Tragedy is seeing your 16 year old brother in a coma for six months (and this was in the summertime).

Nope, definitely not trying to be mean-spirited.

Do I see the humor in it? Yup.

Would I see the humor if someone was hurt? Of course not.

i think what I have learned on this forum is that everyone brings their own experiences with them when they assess a situation. I think those that found no humor in this video have probably had bad experiences driving in slick/snowy conditions. I'm sorry they've had a hard time in the past (sorry about your mom, Danny!). But I don't think they should tell other people what to think/feel about this video (or anything else, for that matter).

Some people find it funny, some find it offensive.

I think that is true of a lot of things in life.

Peace.

Okay, that sounds plain horrible!

Are your mom and brother okay? What a nightmare, is your brother back 100% to his old self? How did it happen?

I don't see the humor in it, bumper cars or not. I was in an accident last night because a guy took a corner too fast, in winter driving condtions, and ended up in my lane. Nobody was hurt and it is just cosmetic but I still have to deal with it now. I feel horrible for those people and the stress that some unknown black ice has placed on them. I say unknown because I'm familiar with Spokane and with some of the hills you can't even see the road until you've just headed over the top towards the bottom. Tragedy? No. Funny? No.

Yeah, I'm sorry but it IS scary to be in a vehicle that is sliding backwards down a hill towards a group of cars and people. I witnessed a smaller situation like this in late november after there was freezing rain. We were stuck at the top of a hill and cars that were on the hill right in front of us were sliding down sideways... and they couldn't control their trucks/ cars. Not to mention, you can't really get out and help them either.

During that storm there were a few deaths, so even though those particular people didn't die right in front of me, other places people WERE dying in that weather. It happens. It's not funny. And if you think you still disagree, I recommend finding a big hill with ice like that and taking a big truck for a joy ride on it. Please let me know how funny it is when you think you might flip the truck or smash into a car you're not sure if there is people in it.

I never said you shouldn't laugh, I said I think it's sad that people would laugh at others' misfortune. You can laugh all you want, but I'm entitled to my opinions. And nope, I'm a s. Cali girl. Never lived in snow. Only go to the resorts to snowboard and we usually dont drive ourselves, so I wouldn't know what it's like to drive in snow.

There is another video of cars sliding down a hill in the ice that is years old but this one was tapped a few days ago.

For those of you find this video funny, I hope you continue to laugh when this happens to YOU or your family.

Yeah, definitely not funny. I agree with previous poster.
How are those mudslides doing?

Humor, like beauty, is in the ear of the beholder.

If you don't find it funny then don't laugh, but perhaps you can respect that I and others do find it funny.
I'm not laughing at the person, but at the unfortunate and helpless situation.
Humor gets much much much lower than this and lots of people find it funny.
They are not beneath you, just different.
I see this as intolerance, and just as ugly as all those other kinds of intolerance.

Lighten up.
People vary.
Their sense of humor varies too.
You don't have to respect that.
You can go through life thinking everyone should be just like you.

The only people you get to control and train are your small children.

Blah, blah, blah. People are entitled to their opinions. You think it's funny. Many other people don't. People die in accidents like this every day. It is very sad. To a lot of people, it is sad, and it's hard for those people to understand humor in death or potential death. But, no, it's not intolerance, and it's not really as ugly as all those other kinds of intolerance. I mean, really, people are saying they don't think it's funny to laugh at other people's misfortunes or human death. And, that's intolerant of who or what?

In that case, maybe we should post some footage of some southern california homes on fire, right? Since I don't have to deal with that and it doesn't hit close to home, maybe I'll find it funny. Or, not, because regardless if it's a fire, ice storm, or mudslide, it's scary and people die from it.

I'm not going to "respect" anyone that thinks it's funny.

As someone who has been in 4 accidents in three years (none of them my fault), I can tell you that even if those people weren't hurt, it can affect them. Every day when I drive and stop at a light, I look up in my rearview mirror and hope the car behind me doesn't crash into me. No, I'm not exaggerating. I'm jumpy and now generally just hate driving. It's like mini-PTSD.

I can almost assure you that when those people in the cars saw a big truck barreling toward them, they most likely screamed.
