Mine makes it to the table they all want "just a bite" or I get the famous "oh I want to try that" as if they don't know what butter, cream, chocolate, insert your word, tastes like? Doesn't help that the server brings extra utensils. I have never said no but I sometimes scream on the inside!

Which is different than AGREEING to share a dessert or ordering a bunch of desserts to share.

So PSers.. what do you normally do at dessert time? Come on be honest now! Do you do this to your friend?

Medical researches have learn brains have two sides which are at war, the YES side and the NO side.

I DO NOT SHARE. If I order dessert, it's mine. I'm not giving anyone a bite unless it's like an OMG YOU HAVE TO TRY kinda thing. And I will stab you with a utensil if you take one without me offering.

This. You don't order dessert but want some of mine? Tough nuts. I will fight you for it and I WILL WIN. Most everyone who knows me has learned the hard way that I take my dessert very, very seriously.

When I go out to eat, I usually ask to see the dessert menu first. This way, I can decide whether to have a starter and main, or a main and dessert, or two starters and dessert etc...

DK :))

I'm a server and I bring utensils to everyone. It's the rule. I've had a customer telling me "I need to order another piece of the chocolate cake because my family ate it all!" It was funny.

I don't usually ever get dessert but I have had those kind of people you are talking about around when I am eating and it annoys me too.
But mostly because I am very picky and have been my whole life. If someone touches my food at all or takes a bite, I wont eat it anymore.
I will barely share with my husband. I don't have a hard time sharing with my kids but anyone else is hard for me. I hate being so picky but I am, guess I got it from my Dad.

I'm one of those annoying people!!!! :wavey:
I don't love sweets, so usually I don't order a dessert, but if you offer me a bite, doggone it, you better mean it, because I will try a bite! I don't dig in without an invitation though.

I have no idea, BUT there is no way I'm sharing unless I have invited people to take a bite. I might even growl audibly at my fellow diners if flourless chocolate cake is involved

LOL I know. It drives me batty. But, I always offer to share just because in my mind it's the polite thing to do. I hate sharing (never was a good sharer) but there are lots of things I do that I don't love doing but do because it is the polite and friendly thing to do. When we dine out with friends usually everyone orders desserts and everyone offers each other a taste. I always decline others offers (except my dh's that is if I am interested in a bite) but always offer in kind. But they have to use their own clean utensils because I am picky that way!

And just a word of advice for those who want just a "bite" but don't order their own dessert. Order your own dessert darn it and and then just take the rest of it home if you don't want the whole thing!

I definitely dont share or ask to share anyone else's. For all those annoying people eyeing off your dessert and hinting how good it looks hoping you'll share it, you just need to reply yeah its great, you'll have to save room for it next time we come here. and for the annoying waiter who brings more than one spoon/fork etc. you just need to say, oh i just need the fork/spoon.

Good ideas! I don't understand why puddings are considered to be fair game for unwanted attacks, plus those that do try to help themselves never politely take a small amount but might as well use a forklift truck for their 'taste'.

I do this to my husband and it drives him nuts. I'll pass on something (dessert, appetizer, whatever) but then when his food arrives, it just looks SO GOOD and I can't help asking him for a bite or two.

DH does take the cake! :? He will ask if he can have a "taste" -- & eat 1/3 of it in his one "bite." I feel guilty refusing when he asks, but sheesh! A person could starve sharing with him. I never ask to taste anyone else's food; if it annoys me, I don't want to do it to other people.

I don't mind sharing when we eat at The Cheesecake Factory since I can't finish the whole slice by myself.

Ame --- YES!!!
If you wanted dessert, you should have ORDERED dessert!

Karl -- If it really is just a bite, I will happily share that with DH.... but he's awful about "sharing" desserts. Somehow he ends up eating almost all of it and I get like two little nibbles. So now we each order a dessert and I get a little bite of his to try and he gets a little bite of mine to try and that is IT.

I have the same problem with French fries and onion rings too :nono:

If you all want a taste then you all are gonna buy me another one and you keep the taste.

See everyone knows what I mean! I will begin to practice my NOs. Its tough because I want to be kind or maybe its I want to come off as kind?   Lately I have been ordering dessert to go. You should see when my DH and son both start digging in. It is crazy. I will then usually order more. That bothers me way less than when it is a group of adults doing the same damn thing! Especially the kind who don't eat this or that or are sugar free, gluten fee, wheat and dairy free! WTH!

DK, you are my long lost sister!! You don't know how many weird stares I get for doing this!!

Thank you. You have articulated my emotions when I am eating a particularly tasty dessert that I ordered, and people are staring at it and saying, "Wow, that looks amazing."

Annoys the crap out of me. I normally offer to share with one person when I'm out with a group and most of my female friends do this too.

DH steals desserts and today I just about broke. He never orders dessert. He doesn't like sweets. Blah blah blah.

DH (damn husband in this case) even goes so far as to say, "you said you were full, are you really going to eat that?" or "you just had ice cream earlier". He's incredibly judgemental about foods at times*. But when the dessert that I ordered shows up, he picks up the spoon and eats a good portion of it. This afternoon I wanted a gingerbread with my coffee so purchased one. DH picked up my gingerbread before I did. I probably made a scene and in front of his parents too! I'm tired of it. If I offer it, fair enough, have a bit, but don't you dare take it after giving me crap for buying it! You said you didn't want it and I bought it for me! He's the only man I know who could successfully disprove the current theory that women steal food off of people's plates - french fries, dessert, etc.

*He's a health freak, I'm not. Perceived judgement about food is a sore point in the marriage and something we try to work hard on.

DH and I usually share a dessert. Anyone else can keep their spoons or forks to themselves.

OMG I haaaaate this! I love pudding so often check the menu first and order appropriately so I can enjoy this treat. I dont mind sharing a taste if you ask politely but never assume. DH always takes massive mouthfuls and often pudding is quite small so he'll eat like 50% of it in one go! :angryfire: Ugh....

If there isn't enough dessert, I order more. I have absolutely no problem calling the waiter or waitress back and ordering not only one more, but two or three more desserts of any variety if people are going dessert crazy.

(Edited to add that I eat out with my family, not "cvilians". I am usually in the role of management of some sort at these affairs!!!)

We share. We usually order multiple desserts for the table so we can try everything and we have been known to order extra to bring home. :naughty:

It's ingrained in me to share. My Dad was a restaurateur, so whenever we ate with him, we would usually order multiple appetizers so we could try different things from the menu, same with desserts. Really the same thing for the entree as well, people in my family asking if anyone wanted to try this or that, sharing portions so everyone could try things.

Now that I have my own family eating out if one person orders a particular item the other person will order something else so we can try two things, and we will get a consensus which dessert to order and share (or get two if we can't decide :).

Do desserts seem smaller to you?

It seems like desserts cost more ($5+ easily, often more) and are miniaturized. DH finishes his in about 3 bites

Except those places (like the Cheesecake Factory) who specialize in large desserts :lickout:
