because women look slimmer in a black dress?

you gotta wear something to a funeral...

why do men have black pants?

Yes, black is slimming, but it's also classic and easy to assesorize, and looks great with diamonds

I personally have very few black dresses, in my closet are several chocolate brown (slimming, but not black) and deep red (for those Asian weddings!) dresses.

This, I didn't own one and my dad died in July. Have you ever tried to find black clothing in July? Total nightmare! We got insanely lucky and found a stunning, classic black dress. Which I will unfortunately have a chance to wear again soon. ;(

when you have nothing to wear and need something last minute, a black dress always works and makes you feel a little bit classy.

That being said, I only have a preggo black dress in my closet. I need to get something....

It is in the women handbook. :read:

I could tell you, but I'd have to kill you.

My mother does not own a dress, black or otherwise. She refuses to wear them. I don't have a solid black dress, but I do have two wrap dresses with a black and white pattern. A black dress for a woman is a bit like a good suit for a man. You can wear it anywhere and be appropriate.

Good way to put it. A black dress is just a little bit forgettable in a way that a bright red dress is not. You can wear one to multiple events without people thinking, "Oh there she is in that dress...again."

Go to the Jones NY website. You'll find the mother lode of LBDs.

Because you can throw a blazer over one and go to work in it, or you can really accessorize them and go to a formal affair in one. They're very versatile and not all of them are plain. I have one plain V-neck LBD, but I have two others with little touches of beadwork, one just along the neck, one just on the short sleeves that really bring them to life. Diamonds and pearls and you're done and well dressed.

haha-exactly what I was thinking! I think the last two I've bought have been for that reason. If it's an event, I usually like to wear a color. Black isn't the most flattering color on me since I'm so pale.

<---- does not own a black dress.

Dude, I live in New York. Anything else, and I'd be breaking union code. I have Batman's closet.

I don't have a little black dress anymore. I did, once upon a time, but I loaned it to a girlfriend and never saw it again. I'd like to go find another one, but I'm a little too lazy :) I do, however, have one super cute pink and white dress. I've only needed to wear one once in the past 2 1/2 years or so, so I don't see the point of buying one unless I need it.

Neither do I. Actually, I don't own any dresses. I do have a few skirts but I never wear them.

No.

Well, yes. But, no.

It goes everywhere. Any occassion. All seasons. With the right accessories, of course.

Brainwashing at work. Notice if you read any kind of list on classic items every woman should own Black dress is ALWAYS mentioned. Plus it is a practical item can be worn for sooooo many events. Black dress is a "Plan B" item when you don't know what to wear.

I just bought another one today! I think I own five.

you can dress it up with nice heels and nice jewelry (diamonds  ) ... or dress it down...

You can wear black to almost any affair- and it makes you look sleeker and slimmer.

Because my membership to the Perpetually Overdressed Goth Chicks Club will be revoked without them?

I think I have a few non-black dresses but not many... in fact I'm wearing one of my favorite black dresses today.

Bwahahaha! This is my life as well (except I don't live in NY).

for me, it's the one thing in my closet that i can pull out, put on, & always been generally pleased with my appearance. (and yes, that does have to do w/the "always appropriate, always forgiving" aspect of the LBD.)

with other clothes it's very hit or miss how i feel about them on a particular day.

I don't own a single dress :o Black and brown dress pants are my fav. Then I only have to worry about finding nice shirts
