Why are these faceted 4-prong studs protruding so far from the diamond jackets? This isn't normal, is it? I'm clearly doing something wrong....

Hi, gang. So I got a pair of 0.22 tcw natural diamond jackets today (they are 8 mm in size and they are supposed to be for 4 mm studs). Beautiful design and the little diamonds sparkled like crazy. But when I tried a pair of 0.50 tcw (each stone is roughly 4 mm) four-prong diamond studs with 'em they protrude way too far, in my opinion. I also tried a pair of four-prong 3 mm Zambian emerald studs with the jackets and they protrude a little less severely, but I honestly think they stick out too far as well. Or is this natural? Can I get some side profile views of your studs and jackets, gang?

am I supposed to get some kind of low profile studs to wear with diamond jackets? Are traditional four-prong basket settings usually not a good match for jackets? Very confused AND disappointed. I was so excited about surprising my gal with these, but they just don't look right to me.....

The first two pictures are the 4 mm four-prong diamond basket studs. And the 2nd two pics are the 3 mm four-prong zambian emerald basket studs. I think the 3 mm basket studs look a little better than the 4 mm. But not by much. Opinions and/or advice desperately needed, please.

Can't tell from the pics, sorry!

My hunch is that the basket of the studs is too wide to fit inside the cup of the jackets, if you know what I mean. Or the settings of the studs are too high.

Can't say I am surprised that the two are not compatible as there had been quite a few posts about studs not fitting snugly inside jackets in the past.

Which is why I would always recommend potential purchasers of plain studs to opt for a setting that is compatible with jackets, preferably from the same vendor, so that the jackets could be purchased at a later date if budget does not allow for both to be purchased at the same time.

I would advise returning the jackets as there is not a lot you can do to change the incompatibility except to have the two pairs of studs reset into a more compatible setting.

DK :))

They protrude further than I would like. I second what others have said…the basket is likely too wide and fit is a gamble unless you go custom. I have a pair of jackets from Cecile Raley and all of her 4 mm studs fit perfectly but it’s hit or miss for my studs not made by her.

I have jackets from IDJ for 5mm round studs, and I've gotten loads of martini set earrings that fit nicely inside them. I think a 4 prong square setting is almost always going to stick out. 3 prong martini is much more flexible.

That is what I am afraid of hence I went the custom route and had DK made the jacket. I sent the studs there and they still had to change the baskets in order to make them sit flushed. 99047 V2-9.jpeg99047 V2-3.jpeg

Beautiful!

When I found a pair of 1cttw jackets that I liked, I contacted the vendor to make sure my bezel-set studs will fit the jackets.

I measured the overall diameter of my studs at different points, and also the depth of the setting too, and provided them to the vendor, in my attempt to make sure my studs would fit snugly inside the jackets, and they do, to my relief!

If and when I am ready to have a larger pair of jackets made in the style of a flower cluster with an air line/gap, I may send the studs over to the bench to ensure a good fit. Have to wait and see what the bench says.

@dk168 those jackets were wildly incorrectly sized. I don't know what happened in that instance, but I own some similar to these (if not exact, I ordered them 8 years ago). I have since bought several martinis from different vendors, including some ACAs from Whiteflash, and they are all 5mm and fit perfectly. One must pay close attention to size of the stone (and depth), but I haven't had any problems. I think the Whiteflash stick out a tiny bit since that martini was a bit steeper, but they still look good in my opinion.

I am happy to provide pics if anyone is interested. I have blue sapphires (bought from a PS'er), pink sapphires, emeralds (Daniel M), rubies, and pearls.

So sorry for your disappointment! The earrings clearly don’t fit into the jackets. You would probably have to have different settings for the earrings.

Thanks, DK! Yeah, I'm going to return these puppies for a refund. They were almost ridiculously inexpensive, but very nice quality. Unfortunately, none of my fiance's four-prong studs work with 'em.

I would like to an update on that thread; however, the OP had gone AWOL since I asked my question in the last post whether side view of her studs were provided.

DK

Thanks for your sympathy! It really is such a bummer to let these go. Very nice quality jackets for a jaw-droppingly low $333 bucks. :cry2::cry2:

Also: that center diamond in your profile pic is AMAZING. wow!!!

I would love an update on that thread, too!

Well, sometimes when things don't work out, something better is around the corner!

Thanks regarding my diamond - Whiteflash ACA! I have enjoyed it!

Found a really good deal on some cute diamond jackets that work nicely with 4 mm and 5 mm studs (and 5 to 6 mm round pearls). These have 0.20 total carat weight of VERY sparkly diamonds with VS2 clarity. This is a picture with the 4 mm fuchsia pink sapphire studs (they look like purplish rhodolite garnet in this lighting, but generally they have more pink mixed in). There's quite a bit of an airline here with 4mm studs, but I don't mind--- and neither does my fiance. and those really primo 14k white gold natural diamond hoops look especially good in this picture, I must say. Excellent cuts, G color, VS clarity. :kiss2:

I wish I'd taken a side profile picture! Completely brain-farted on that. But it was a nice fit--- the studs didn't protrude much at all from the jackets. From the side they look like a diamond Halo ring does, in fact (probably a bit more flush, actually. Yayyy!!!

Thank you! The picture doesn't do the little diamonds justice. They sparkle like crazy! And it actually looks better with 5 mm studs as far as reducing the airline, but she wanted to wear her 4 mm fuchsia pink sapphire studs with the jackets yesterday to match her diamond and fuchsia pink sapphire ring. And these jackets are a perfect flush fit (with no visible airlines) with 6 mm round ball studs, so I know they will look terrific with the round 6 mm freshwater pearl studs I have coming from a reliable Etsy seller. Looking forward to seeing that combination along with her 14 karat white gold diamond hoops.

The pictures are a little blurry, but here are some shots of her wearing the new diamond jackets over her 1.05 total carat weight natural diamond studs (in platinum). The measurements on the diamonds are 5.1 each, so the airline is quite a bit less significant than with the 4.1 mm fuchsia pink sapphire studs. The combined sparkle is absolutely crazy! Lots of good fire, too. She's in love with those diamond jackets already--- I love how they make a decent-sized pair of studs into a BIG-ASS pair of studs. :-o:P2Messenger_creation_B64CAC94-45DC-4867-A7D8-CE74EA028D0C~3.jpegMessenger_creation_DB3C2703-C75F-4213-8752-02E436A4479E~3.jpeg
