I know you weren't speaking to me... But... Ik ben Zuid-Afrikaans. Ik begreep de Nederlanders in uw uitnodiging... ;-) Hier praat ons Afrikaans... Verstaan jy ook Afrikaans? :)

Very sweet Missdebby...can you tell us what the significance of 12 years is for the Dutch? Love to hear other customs and I'll
be coming up on my 12th next year too!

missydebby-

I like your invitations very much! Are you an American married to a Dutch man or are you, also, Dutch? What is your story (on how you met and where you you live)? I am an American married to an Italian. My wedding invitations were in English, French, and Italian.

Ja, maar niet helemaal! Mijn nederlands is slecht, maar Ik doe mijn best. Hat is echt een moelijke taal. Mijn meisje was 5 toen wij hier verhuisden and zij was in minder dan 3 maanden fluent. Ungeloofelijk!(Toen ik mijn nederlands curse gehad was zij mijn kleine juvrouw!)

Ok, this is the craziest logic ever! (Leave it to the Dutch) But you want to know the significance of the 12 1/2 year anniversary? It's half of 25. (no sh-t!) I feel like I'm in Alice in Wonderland celebrating an unbirthday!

Yeah, I'm American married a Dutchman. I was working in SF in the 90's and he was in the Bay Area on one of those visas for really smart computer people whom they had to import during the go-go tech boom. I met him at a housewarming party that was being held for his friend. I had crashed the party. Neither me or my roommate knew anyone there. The minute I saw him I was dumbstruck. Tall, broad, handsome and a full bottle of whisky in his hand. We sat outside and talked for the whole party. I saw my first ever shooting star that night, if you can believe it. We've been together ever since... literally as we went on our first official date the very next day.

We ended up staying in the States until after our daughter was born. When she was 5 we moved to the Netherlands. Why? Although I LOVE the States, Holland is like one of the best places for a kid to grow up. It's like Norman Rockwell's wet dream out here. I wanted her to be fluent in two different cultures and languages, and I also wanted to learn another language. (It's on my Life's To Do List) I am far too lazy to do it without moving somewhere, so I went for it. The first 2 years I was extremely homesick but finally that weared off as I got settled in with friends and groups. And I finally got fluent enough to have small talk. Now it's been 5 years and I feel good, like I'm a citizen of 2 countries. But I stayed American cause I am a freak about voting and wanted to still be able to participate civically.

Hey, I'm an American with a Dutch husband too. There are tons of those Hollanders out there! We also lived in Holland -- moved to Amsterdam about 3 months after we were married. My husband had had an offer from a Dutch bank & my company transferred my job overseas, worked out well. After 5 yrs, though, my tax-holiday thingy was up & the additional taxes would have eaten up my entire salary, so we moved back to the States. My husband's family is still there & friends we adore.

I didn't get as fluent as you, MissyDebby, because I spent most of the week traveling around Europe for work, and my husband wanted to speak English at home. So my Dutch is a lot like my 4-yr-old nephew's but I understand everything. They speak such good English, at parties everyone spoke Dutch & I answered in english, everybody was happy.

Where did you live in Holland?

I know, the Dutch are everywhere! And they make good spouses! Yeah the taxes are rough here, but the social services are fantastic, our town is beautifully maintained, the schools some of the best in the world, etc etc, so I'm cool. Still, I buy many a thing in the States when I go to visit. We live in Zwolle, about an 1 1/2 northeast of Amsterdam. it is the cutest little town of about 170,000.

Love your last name... talk about super Dutch action! I bet you get some great pronunciations from your American friends!

Heel leuk! Gefeliciteerd met jullie twaalf en een half jarig huwelijk! Veel geluk voor de volgende twaalf en een half jaar ;))

You know you get a day off work for this, right?! Enjoy :naughty:

Hartstikke bedankt!!!

Hey, it works for me! With people getting married older (like myself) and more second (and third) marriages some of us will
never make it to see the big 50th anniversary...I am hoping for 25 though!

Any reason to celebrate your love it a good one!

Oh yeah, the pronunciations are verrry interesting! Lots don't even try -- "I'd like to introduce you to Mrs.....uh." I used my husband's name for the first about 5 yrs we were married, but nobody could remember it or say it outside of Holland, so I went back to using my maiden name. Just easier, although Oosthoek is kind of neat -- the pres. of the company I worked for always called me Mrs. EastCorner. (That's what it means, for you non-Dutch speakers.)

Zwolle is the CUTEST town!!! I had a friend who lived there. Also skated on the canals around there. NOTHING is more fun than canal skating! I have pictures of a Sunday when a bunch of us spent the day doing that, you can see the church spire in the background, weeping willows hanging to the ice. Guys with little carts sit nearby selling bitterballen & hot chocolate....the most fun I ever had in my life! My FIL said when he was a kid in Padvinders (Boy Scouts) they had weekend excursions, skating from village to village & camping in the snow in tents. What a ball!

We lived in Buitenveldert, southern Amsterdam.

So cute! Congrats - hope you have an amazing day.

missdebby - I lived in Dordrecht until I was about six years old. When me moved to the States my younger brother and I were very intent to learn English... so I speak Dutch like a two year old, at best! But I heard Dutch around the house for a long time after that -- and I still get an earfull of Dutch if I happen to call my mother after she's been talking to her sister -- so I can understand and read it reasonably well.

Lovely, MD! My fiance has always wanted to raise children in Europe and I think we might be looking at Holland for child-rearing now that we've heard from you!!! LOL!

Thanks for sharing your wonderful invitation, very best wishes...may you enjoy the rest of your years together very happily!
