Whiteflash PT950 Platinum Owners - Happy with the quality?

Short version of my question: My question for Whiteflash Platinum owners (PT950, 5% iridium mixture which they've been using for the past few years), are you happy with the platinum quality? Do you have any other platinum pieces to compare to which are made with a 90/10 iridium or 95/5 ruthenium mixture? If so, do you notice a difference in scratch/wear resistance?

Longer, more detailed version:
I purchased a beautiful .9 carat AGS 000 stone from Whiteflash and I'm 99% sure I'm going with their Sleek Line Pave setting (link below) in Platinum. After showing my girlfriend hundreds of pics of various settings, she keeps coming back to this one as her favorite.

Whiteflash currently uses a PT950 95% platinum alloy with 5% iridium which seems to be about the least desirable platinum mixture after reading dozens of threads here about platinum. They will however use a 90% platinum 10% iridium mixture if desired for an additional (but fair) fee (x2 once I purchase a matching wedding band). The only drawback to going with the custom mixture aside from the increased price is that it qualifies as a semi-custom request and the ring would therefore not be returnable.

The rep I've been working with at WF said that they've not seen much difference in wear between 90/10 and 95/5 iridium and that the 95/5 is easier to work with. I believe they used to use the 90/10 several years ago based on something I read in a thread here on PriceScope.

A page on Whiteflash's site states that: "The way the piece was formed, the heat treatments, welding and soldering applied and the skill of the craftsmen involved are all as critical to the final product as the alloy itself. Seasoned craftsmen and smiths may develop a favorite based on personal experience but no platinum alloy is "better" or "worse" than the others."

While this may be true to a degree, the above statement does seem to contradict a lot of what I've read here and on other sites re: the benefits of different platinum compositions.

So my question for Whiteflash Platinum owners (PT950, 5% iridium), are you happy with the platinum quality? Do you have any other platinum pieces to compare to which are made with a 90/10 iridium or 95/5 ruthenium mixture? If so, do you notice a difference in scratch/wear resistance? Any input is appreciated.

Thanks!

Stick with the 950 over the 90/10. It is easier for them to work with and while I've never owned 90/10 ring, only 950, I have read that 90/10 scratches easier. I believe it was Musey who has a 90/10 from Vatche and she wished she had gone with 950 instead. Gorgeous setting, btw! You won't be disappointed!

Thanks. Would love some more feedback from those with Whiteflash 950 (iridium) platinum, especially if you own jewelry in other platinum mixes like 900 iridium or 950 ruthenium to compare it to.

Sorry but that is not correct. 90/10 is harder and more scratch resistant than 95/5iridium.

I would absolutely have the ring made in 90/10...and in fact, that is exactly what I did when I had my setting done a few months ago.
The hardest is 95 platinum/5 ruthenium, but either 90/10iridium or 95/5ruthenium are fine.

Read this:

Ringmakers using 95plat/5ruthenium: Tiffany, Leon Mege, Mike Robinson

Ringmakers using 90plat/10iridium: Mark Morrell, Victor Canera, Maytal Hannah, Beaudry

Re: Whiteflash PT950 Platinum Owners - Happy with the qualit

I'll just add that I have several pieces of the 90/10irid and 95/5ruth (Tiffany, Leon Mege, Beaudry, etc.) and they hold up beautifully. My sister-in-law has stock 95/5irid rings and they were totally gray within a year of having the rings.

I have paid WF extra to upgrade earrings to 18k white gold with palladium and they are so nice to do that. Knowledge is a good thing so you can get a better alloy!

Re: Whiteflash PT950 Platinum Owners - Happy with the qualit

Whiteflash will actually upgrade the ring to either 950 ruthenium or 900 iridium for the same fee (8% over the cost of the stock ring in 950 iridium).

What to do, what to do...

Re: Whiteflash PT950 Platinum Owners - Happy with the qualit

Either one is fine. I think you are very wise to do the upgrade.

Re: Whiteflash PT950 Platinum Owners - Happy with the qualit

I owned cast 950/ir from WF.
I also own die-struck 950/ru.

Cast 950/ir is going to patina. Quickly. So if you don't like patina, don't get it.
Month-by-month photojournal (of cast 950/ir) here: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/platinum-vs-white-gold.147732/#post-2668608

The diestruck 950/ru band is far more patina-resistent (scratch-resistent) - function of both alloy and method of manufacture. I have heard that 900/ir is also more scratch-resistent than 950/ir but I don't own anything in that alloy so I don't have first-hand experience with it.

The alloy discussions are not specific to one vendor or another BTW - well-cast 950/ir is going to have the same properties and characteristics whatever vendor you choose.

Is this a proven fact?

If true, it certainly takes WF out of the equation and would allow me to focus more on selecting an alloy mixture based on other people's experiences (regardless of the vendor/designer).

Well cast pieces of the same alloy will have a certain characteristic scratch-resistence, yes.
Not all vendors create high-quality castings and not all vendors have rigid quality control. Handforging, which results in a denser metal, will have more scratch-resistence given same alloy composition.

WF is a high-quality casting house so no worries there.
