White gold stamped 583?

I tried posting in the Antique & Vintage forum but only got one response so thought I'd try this forum.

I have an Art Deco style ring stamped 583. Does anyone know which country would have stamped their gold 583 in that time period?

I know 583 = 14k which leads me to believe it might be American... but if it was American wouldn't it be stamped 14k, not 583?

Most countries class 14k gold as 585, so seeing a 583 stamp is a little more unusual and I'm hoping it might help to narrow down which country it might have come from.

Thank you :)

Could be Russian. My understanding is most western EU gold would be 750/18k...with some 375/9k in UK /commonwealth countries.
Someone else might have a better handle, but that's what I remember trying to research some old hallmarks.
