Dh and I were looking at settings today, and I think we''ve got it narrowed down to two. We''d like to do it all in platinum, but it may be more than we want to spend. So, we''re thinking of doing 18K white gold with a platinum head for the center stone. From what I understand, the gold will have to be replated in a few years. Will the rhodium plating cover up the platinum as well, when the piece is plated? If so, is that a cause for concern? Are there any other reasons why I shouldn''t get a 18K gold setting with a plat. head?

bumping, in case someone knows. Thanks!

I did my ring entirely in 19K white gold. It does not need to be plated and stays nice and white!

I would think the rhodium will cover both the wg and platinum, but that is a good thing because I don''t think you''d want dull gray prongs and a bright shiny shank! Some people do rhodium plate platinum to keep it from getting so dull. Rhodium is in the platinum family, I believe, so it is not a problem to use rhodium on a wg/plat ring. I wouldn''t worry about it, but by all means ask the jeweler who sells the setting to be sure!

The jewelry store clerk, didn''t think it would be a problem, but I wanted some other opinions. We''re leaning towards a simple A Jaffe set. Model numbers ME1401 and MR1401.

The price breakdown with labor and tax (for both rings) is as follows:
all 18K $1655.69
18K with plat head $2145.69
all plat $3626.49

As you can see, the platinum is WAY more $$$. My dh would really prefer to get me the platinum, and he probably would have if this had all happened a few years ago, but he''s back in school right now, so spending cash is a bit tight. We''ve been married 8 years this March, so as much as I would like to add a little bling for our 10th, I''m not sure that it will be possible. Although, if I go with the 18K, then he could probably swing getting me another matching band (MR1401) to wear on the other side of the diamond.

The upside to all this is that this leaves my other stones unaccounted for, so I should be able to get my 3.81/3.85mm RB diamonds set in studs! YEAH!
