i have read some mixed reviews about wearing white gold and platinum next to each other. i am considering platinum for an upgrade ering, my wb is white gold and i do not want to change it for sentimental reasons. If anyone has experience wearing the two metals together i would appreciate your comments.

I do and its not really noticeable especially once they are worn. I think if the wedding band is wide and the ering has a lot of metal you might see it more pronounced

thanks bgray - i was thinking it wouldn't be too noticeable as the wb has channel set diamonds, so there's not even a lot of metal on show. have you noticed any damage to the rings?

the platinum will eat the gold.

platinum is soft, picks up grit and becomes an abrasive against the gold - silver is the same way.

thanks yssie - have you worn together and seen bad damage? i remember another poster (EHR2009?) mentioned wearing white gold and platinum together and not noticing a bad result.

maybe i shouldget a platinum eternity ring and move the wb to the right hand :naughty:

I haven't - I wouldn't wish to, because the properties of both metals preclude the possibility of not seeing wear on the gold after prolonged wear together.

As long as there are two smooth surfaces against each other, I don't see it doing a lot of damage unless one is very hard on their rings. My mother has worn a wg diamond band next to her platinum rings for many years and there are no problems. I'd reduce wear and tear on any rings by not sleeping in them and taking them off when working in the yard, etc. I also prefer platinum alloyed with ruthenium which is harder than platinum/iridium. It will scratch less.

I have a plat channel set band with a white gold ering. I'm going to have the soldered together with white gold so they don't rub. I have noticed small scratches on the white gold after less than a month and I think the plat is the only thing that could have caused them due to the location.

There will be tiny scratches even with two platinum rings next to each other. That is normal. You just have the rings polished from time to time if you want to keep the platinum ring shiny. The wg ring will need rhodium plating to stay white.

thanks for the tips guys! i think i will have my new ering made in plat and wear together with the white gold wb but be gentle on them as diamondseeker2006 suggests. i do plan to get a plat eternity(s) one day - but i would still like the option of wearing the wb and ering together.
