My fiance got the e-ring he ordered in... and although he hasn't officially proposed - asked me to "preview" the ring because he was worried about it and wanted to be sure if it needed to be returned it could be done within the return window.... and I'm so glad he did because the oval was set East - West. I don't know if he was specifically asked (he would have said North-South) - but I'm so surprised (and also disappointed) that they did this. I would have assumed that unless someone specifically asked - that an oval is normally set North - South.... What do you all think? Would you be surprised if you ordered a ring and the elongated stone was set East- West???

Nope, not really, depend on the overall design and down to personal preference.

Then shouldn't the vendor ask.... ?

Yap, probably, unless the setting is designed for E-W setting and he picked that setting.

the setting (like the vast majority we found) was round and had to be customized for an oval.

so a generic one. The vendor should definitely have ask for your preference then.

The vendor should definitely have asked.

The key here is you like it in the NS orientation and you are still within the window of returning, you are the one who will wear it all the time so get what pleases your eyes.
