i have a theoretical question and am curious to know.

which shape diamond would give the most amount of brilliance if most of the important factors are equal ? (i know there are lots of factors but i am just asking for a general ball park idea)

how could one rank the order of the common shapes ?
RB, princess, asscher, edmerald, oval, radiant, cushion marquise etc etc

haha

just an interesting thought i had

I can not complete your lineup, but rounds have the physical ability to return more light than any other shape. This is light physics. Emeralds and asshcers will be at the bottom because they use step cutting, although they can be extraordinarily beautiful, and I do not know what order the others will finish in, but I suspect that oval and marquise will be just above the emerald and asschers since they have bow tie problems.

I think that the edmerald, like the edsel is not longer being made...

ahem
The answer is it depends.
Step cuts can be brighter than many ags0 princess cuts.
A princess cut is possible that is brighter than most AGS0 rounds
RB has the most potential followed by the rest for the most part.
The brightest in each of the fancies can be in the same range except for marquise and pears which are going to be lower.
That is not to say that they are that bright the way they are commonly cut, we are talking about potential.

Karl, what is the theoretical best that can be cut for each shape and then compare them? Not necessary optimize for other stuff, like fire, contrast.

Karl,

I would have to see it to believe it.

However, I gladly admit that I would LOVE to see it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wink who only knows for sure that theoretically the round has the greatest potential according to the light scientists that I have spoken with.

Using DC stereo I have designed SE cuts, princess cuts and rounds out to 1.05-1.10 range, modern super-ideals hover around .98
Typically the best RB's being sold are in the .98 range.
brightest Princesses in the .80s low .90s
It is not uncommon to see EC's in the 40% range because of over contrast.

Remember that brightness must be balanced against contrast so the ultimate brightness is not the goal in the best diamonds.
Were RB's shine is that they can be super bright and have nice contrast at the same time better than other shapes.

edit: removed self promotion of my product *slap* bad storm.
