Hello Everyone-

My bf and I have been looking at diamonds. I want to get a little more bling for my buck, and am considering an I or J color stone. Through my extensive research, I have read that if you have an ideal/very good cut stone, it minimizes the appearance of color. Also, I have read that if you get a stone with med-blue flour it will also make the stone appear whiter. In looking at HUNDREDS of I and J color stone throughout this forum, it does seem that I and J''s of good cuts arent nothing to sneeze at :) With that said, please give me your opinion on 1) whether this is true/ and you agree and 2) am I better off getting a J with Med Blue Fluor or an I with no flour?? Which will appear "whiter"? Assuming both are 2.03 carat cushions with Very Good cuts.

There are still too many factors. I think I''d see them both in person and decide with the eye which one looks better to me. If you aren''t planning to sell it one day then I''d go with the one that speaks to me. That being said a J with flour assuming everthing you said would probably be the best case senario for purchase price. But a lot depends on the stone and how warm they actually are.

I have a J. When we started looking I was trying to find one with SB flour but it was extreamly hard to find a stone of the size I wanted with that. In the end I choose a J without it simply because I couldn''t find a good one with it.

Yeah, it can be hard to find fluorescence strong enough to be noticeable at all... like strong to very strong. So while yes- blue fluor would be ideal to make a lower color look a little whiter- it can be hard to find one, especially if you''re looking for a well cut cushion.

Personally I think Js are a great value. YMMV.

The one that's better cut and appeals to you most in terms of light patterns and liveliness.

Bear in mind that:

1. There's no systematic approach to grade cushion cuts (so, BTW, who says they are "very good"? Can you trust this judgment?)
2. The evaluation of fluorescence level, while not haphazard is still subjective (i.e. is it medium, strong, very strong?) and it may take a lot more than medium to lift the stone's colour
3. Fluorescence will only "help" in sunlight/natural light. Artificial lighting of any kind (except tanning lamps and disco "black light") has virtually no UV
4. I to J is a visible difference, but I think one that 99% of people would be hard put to tell with each stone in isolation.

Cushions may show a bit more body colour than a round for example, I take it you are looking at GIA graded diamonds? The cut is very important to get you a beautiful diamond, so I would ditto concentrating on that and if you can find one you like with fluorescence then thats a bonus. We really can't say which would look whiter out of the two diamonds you are considering as there are too many variables.

What you could do is to buy an ASET scope, and you can use it to help you judge the cut of the cushions you are viewing which meet your visual requirements.

This chart shows you how to interpret the results.
