I was just browsing the gemsites when I came across these 2 mandaring garnet cabochons. I would to do a poll but didin't know how!

As I am still having problem to judge stones by pics only, would appreciate if you CS experts could tell me which one you would pick and why?

They're taken under different lighting conditions so it's difficult to tell with any certainty. The second one you can see more inclusions and because it's been taken in brighter light it looks more vibrant. However, I suspect the first one will be nicer overall and just as bright as the second one.

Hope that helps.

I agree with LD; the background and lighting conditions are different so to be able to compare fairly is difficult at best. I, too, suspect the first stone might look as good as the second cabochon which has a dark background which accentuates the orange colour, plus stronger lighting used.

upper stone-material seems a little darker-cleaner with smoother texture within the stone-steve....

first stone appears to have fewer/less inclusions. impossible to compare these two unless in person. the inclusions in the 2nd one might not even bother me if the price were right and depending on how i planned to use it.

Thank you Lovingdiamonds, Chrono, m76steve for chiming in!

Yes, I understand that these 2 stones are taken with different backgrounds and lightings! But what I can't see is the color saturation of the 1st stone! The stronger lighting of the second stone gives it a vivid orange color (with a yellow hue?) and makes it glow nicely! Do you think the first stone will have the same orange saturation?

MoZo, Thanks for your response!

Thats exactly the description from the vendor! First stone is much cleaner that the 2nd and the price difference is huge! I am not sure what I want to do with it. Am just looking but not feeling comfortable to buy yet! That being said the price of the second stone is really attractive! :naughty:

So both these cabochons are from the same vendor or am I not understanding this correctly?

lol! I dunno which to pick myself! These stones are from a site which you recommended way back! They have tons of sugarloafs in stock! And I am still searching!!

Hi back to you Gailey! :wavey: :wavey: Its way too long since we spoke! Hows Ontario coming up? Waiting for you to tell, hint hint ;))

Are they both the same size? I prefer the overall shape of the top one to the bottom one. The bottom one looks a little lopsided. The color is nice on both. Under what lighting were the photos taken?

It's coming up soon. Actually it's heading towards me now at terminal velocity. Give me a couple of days and I'll update you properly. Life threw me a horrible curve ball yesterday and I'm still spinning.

But I just wanted to say, don't try and pick a stone from these two photos. Do one of two things. Either get them to photograph the two stones together or get them to send you both stones.

They're both very pretty! I agree with Gailey. Oh, and I know that site you're talking about. I could be on it for days lol.

Ditto to Gailey’s advice. Now that I know both stones are from the same vendor, the best thing to do is to have them photographed together in the same picture if you are still interested in them.

Hi TL, thanks for weighing in! The top one is bigger and much more expensive, huge difference! I am not sure what lighting the vendor is using, I wanted to know which one has a better color saturation before asking vendor questions.

Dannny, thanks! Am starting to prefer this too!

Yeah, I think thats the best thing to do. I will email vendor for both stones to be photographed together. I just hope that they will oblige as I have never dealt with them before and do not know how their customer service will be. Thanks for your thoughts!

Based on the photos, they look similar, and if they are truly similar in color, and they're around the same size, then I would get the less expensive one. The differences between the two don't appear to be so huge that one should be way more expensive than the other. Get a side by side shot. Good idea from Gailey.

I talked to JKT yesterday and my project should be done by the end of the month! I'm so excited! I don't know if I ever posted a picture of the sketch she sent me. We're only doing two diamond bands instead of four like in the sketch.

I noticed the huge price difference on their site and was kinda shocked. I would totally get the less expensive one!

Me too! I have to give it abit more thought. The stones are rather huge too, so right now I am not sure what to do with it! Probably wire wrap it as pendant if I decide to buy. Will see.
