Hi there,

I'm new to this diamond research and would appreciate all the help I can get! Which of these 2 loose stones is better.....A or B? The price difference doesn't bother me much. Both diamonds are GIA rated.

1) 1.27-Carat Round Diamond, Ideal-cut, G-color, and VS1-clarity ($ 8325 U.S.)
Depth % = 61%
Table % = 57%
Crown angle = 34 deg.
Pavillion angle = 41 deg.
Symmetry = Excellent
Polish = Excellent
Girdle = Medium to slightly thick
Culet = none
Fluorescence = none
Measurements: 7.02 x 6.98 x 4.27 mm

2) 1.23-Carat Round Diamond, Ideal-cut, H-color, and VS2-clarity ($ 7617 U.S.)
Depth % = 61.7%
Table % = 55%
Crown angle = 34.5 deg.
Pavillion angle = 40.6 deg.
Symmetry = Excellent
Polish = Excellent
Girdle = Medium to slightly thick, faceted
Culet = none
Fluorescence = none
Measurements: 6.86 x 6.89 x 4.24 mm

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Welcome,

They both have great potential, do you have Idealscope images for these diamonds, and are they from online vendors or brick and mortar jewellers?

Thanks for the warm welcome Lorelei! No, unfortunately I don''t have any of the image you requested, but on the GIA, both have very minimal inclusions on the table. The diamonds are from the bluenile website (oh, am I allowed to say the direct website on this post?)

Welcome cganesh 1,

Well, stone A is bigger. Does that count as a legitimate vote?

Yes, you can mention the website - no worries!

Either could be good going by the numbers, without IS thats all we can tell really but BN do have a good return policy so plenty of time to inspect the diamond. Do you have a preference for colour and do you also have the lower girdle facets/ lower halves measurements? You can find this info on the diamond outline on the report to the right, where it has the diagram illustrating the proportions, look to the lower left of the diamond diagram for this info.

Thanks Steel! Good point about stone A being bigger, but is it really the better bang for my buck in terms of all of the other features of this diamond? Hmmm....

I was trying to be funny - it is obvious it is bigger

. All else being equal if you bought diamond B and gave yourself/your intended the option of upgrading to over (almost) 7mm, up one colour and up one clarity and all for 700 smackers. Would you/she do it? I would in a heartbeat. All else being equal, mind.

Thanks Lorelei.....I''m learning some new terms by the e-mail here!

Yes...both stones have a lower girdle of 75%. Not sure what is considered ideal for this parameter?

In terms of colour, I guess I have this thing that G is better (which I guess it is!!!).

) But from what I''ve read, unless you''re a trained gemologist and you have a G vs. H stone side by side, it is very difficult on visual inspection to note a difference...right?

Also, once the stone is in the setting, by visual inspection alone, one likely may not see a difference in the colour of G vs. H right?

What do you think?

Hi Steel,

Yes, you''re right, for a difference of $700 (with all other factors being equal), it doesn''t trouble me to get the 1.27 C. I guess what I''m really asking is....and I guess this is difficult to answer because it''s all on paper....which of the 2 stones performs better? More lingo I''m learning!

75% is a good range, thanks!

GIA/ AGS graded G to H I doubt that most people would ever be able to tell the difference especially when mounted, yes. Either could be an excellent choice going by the numbers, but without images we can't tell much about individual performance or which performs better, as BN don't supply Idealscope images.

Thanks for all of your help Lorelei! Guess I may have to call the vendor then to see if they can assess the 2 stones under the scope.

Thanks again Lorelei.

Ditto!

So I see.....minus my Idealscope that is!
