Hi all!
I asked my husband and mom and neither seem to have an opinion on this… which cut would you prefer on a 3/4 eternity band for your right hand — oval or emerald?

My every day wedding ring is a round cut 3/4 eternity (35 pts) u-prong setting from IDJ. And I’m looking for a right hand ring for our 10 yr anni :D I’m leaning oval…

Congratulations on the anniversary!

To me an emerald cut band is both more classic and also more different from your lovely round band, so that's what I would choose in your position. But have you seen either shape in person?

I’d go with the emerald cut band because I’ve always loved them and for the reasons shared above. At the same time, it doesn’t really matter what I’d prefer- I’d say go with what you love! Jewels are meant for the wearer to enjoy and love- the rest of us can just admire your sparkles and good taste;) - they are both gorgeous choices!

Do you have an engagement ring? What shape is the centre stone? It might be nice to match the shape to the shape in at least one band… so if it’s a round, you’re already covered, but if it’s an oval or EC you could get a band of that one!

I have always loved ECs so usually I go for that, but if you think you’ll ever wear the band stacked with your round WB I would do ovals. I don’t like ECs stacked with rounds.

I’ve only seen the emerald cut on my hand in person — at a local store and it was gorgeous. I go back at the end of the month to pick up my ring from repair and have a chance to try on oval then!

Thanks so much for your feedback!

Girl I wish I loved my engagement ring but I do not, and so I never wear it.
It was picked out by my MIL and when I got engaged, she said “whatever you do, don’t ever change the ring/setting”. My preferred style would be a simple solitaire.

Sounds like it’s overwhelmingly emerald cut from pricescopers! Yall are the experts so I trust these opinions :D

So your MIL would rather the ring sit in a box on a shelf rather than being worn? I don't care who picked it out - it is your ring and should be to your liking, not hers! What does your husband say about all of it?

Girl, upgrade/change that setting on your ering! Don't let your MIL, or anyone, dictate what you can/cant do with
something that belongs to you! Change it to something you love and will wear!!! Immediately!!!

When MIL complains, ask her if she would like the setting. She can put her stone in it since she is so in love with it!

Back to the original question....I prefer an emerald cut eternity band. Classy and classic! Emerald cut eternitys always
make me think luxury...I don't know what it is about them, but that would be my choice.

Seems like such a shame to leave it unworn like that for so many years! Maybe try talking to your husband - I can imagine being sentimentally attached to the centre stone, but not the setting. And definitely not the setting your MIL picked out - it would be one thing if it were your choice!

Sorry to get off topic.. But sell the setting and re-mount, to your liking. Life is too short!!! It's your ring, not hers.

Let us know what you think after trying on the oval! I wear an oval eternity usually as a rhr but occasionally in place of my wedding set. I have short fingers and find the shape of the oval more flattering on my hand. IIRC it’s 4.5 ctw, .25 pt, size 5. IMG_8798.jpeg

Reset it so you like it! It’s yours, do what you like.

HI, a few months ago,I changed my wedding band from a 5-stone oval. I loved it when I bought it around 25 years ago, but most likely, it was because It was affordable to me at the time: 3 ct total, $3000.

Over the years, I grew to dislike it because it never had the presence I wanted. I waited a long time to change it and am very happy now.

I think everyone dreams of an emerald band!

I would get emerald for myself but try on the oval, sometimes things just look right when you wear them.

It’s not an ugly ring but if you like solitaires then I understand why this ring is not to your taste. Since it was a gift from family (and we have a whole ‘nother thread on a gift over in the Hangout forum) I would continue to do what you are doing and leave the gift-ring be. Pass it on to a daughter or niece or favorite friend.

Get yourself a solitaire of your own choosing. We will help you search!

That ring looks soo lovely on you and that’s why I hope OP at least tries on the oval, even though most of us prefer the emerald.

Just an idea...you can get a lab stone to go in your current setting and put your current stone in the solitaire or setting of your choice.
That way you can keep your original setting to wear around family events.

Um… what?? How have I not thought of this!? … this is why I don’t make the big bucks.

Tyty333 - I’m sorry to ask you — but it’s because I’m a beginner here, and you recently responded.

On PriceScope, is it common for people to ask about how reasonable a cost estimate is for a ring (with known specs)? I want to ask but not sure if that’s frowned upon.

I can answer this: it's very common for people to talk about pricing. Not everyone wants to say what they paid for their jewelry and I definitely wouldn't ask another member what they spent if they didn't volunteer it, but sharing your quote and asking if it's reasonable is not at all frowned upon by members here. This is a consumer education forum and IMO pricing is a big part of that. Your jeweler may not want their quotes published, but that's a different story.

I am gauche and ask what people paid all the time lol

Meanwhile, I don’t mind sharing how much I paid! I feel like that info could be super helpful for others. Though I guess I didn’t take into account what newtojewels said about how the jeweler may feel.

I actually came back to this, and love this setting soooo much! I wish I could find this setting, or similar

I prefer an understated look, so I would vote for horizontal baguettes or asscher band.

I can't remember the iconic celebrity who had multiple stacked wedding bands, one which was a horizontal baguette band, but it was perfection.

My first choice would be asscher cut, aka square-cut emerald cut.
A distant second choice would be emerald cut.

There are no other cut shapes that I'd consider.

Well, the emerald cut you will need to obsessively clean, if you are like me. So make sure you buy it from somewhere that makes REALLY good settings and use 14kt as it's harder.

As for the oval: if you could have the 30 point one with no bowties, I love that on. But the no bowtie thing is unlikely.

It depends. What would bother me might not bother you though.

If I wanted all one shape? I'd do cushions personally. You can do square ones or elongated ones and they are less likely to have bowties.

This is the one I'd buy (in terms of shape and faceting):
