Hey Everyone...I''m very new to this sight, but was looking for some advice on which diamond to buy for my girlfriends engagement ring. I don''t know if I should for a bigger carat size or better color/clarity. My choice is to buy a 1 carat princess cut / ideal cut / h color / vs1 clarity or a 1.13 carat princess cut / ideal cut / i color/ vs2 clarity.

i''m not sure if i should go for the bigger diamond or the better color. any help would be greatly appreciated as i am so new to this! thanks!

I would go lower clarity, as long as it is eye-clean.

For color, take a look at this video, http://vimeo.com/3288695.

Also, only AGS grades princess cuts in cut performance, so unless these are AGS graded stones with cut grade AGS0, the ideal cut definition is by the vendor and we have no ideal how good or bad that can be.

thanks for the response which leads to my second question. would you be able to tell a substantial difference between a 1 carat and 1.13 carat ring?

Really depends on the cut. A badly cut deep stone will certainly look smaller. A shallow stone might have better face-up dimensions but still looks smaller optically to an ideal cut stone. So everything depends on the cut. Between 2 ideal cut, depending on the cut, there could be a difference in face up dimensions of 0.2-0.3mm, side by side it will be noticeable.

thanks again for the response stone cold...so from what i''m getting with all thing considered you would go with the bigger diamond depending on the measurements. what is the lowest on the color scale you would go with a high quality cut? here are my choices. prices are close so what would your pick be? I''m leaning towards #2, but the I color worried me:

Are you buying online or from a brick and mortar shop? If online and without able to see it, I would try and find an AGS0 cut graded princess and have an ASET image to verify. Go lower on the clarity, as long as it is eye-clean to you, you will not be able to tell if a stone is VS1, IF or an eye-clean SI1.

Can''t really tell much without ASET image, so I can''t recommend any of these.

This depends on the diameter of each diamond.

Firstly no such thing as Ideal GIA cut grade especially for Princess, although some vendors use this term! I would eliminate the last diamond from the info given, the first two might have potential but they are obviously not top cut diamonds, also we cannot recommend which to buy in our consumer capacities, but make suggestions only. Are these from a jewellery store or online? If online, if you could get ASET images and detailed photos then that would be a big help.

What is the girdle thickness on the second diamond please?
