I''ve been wanting to do this forever and I finally get my chance.

I can guarantee that both of these are beautiful diamonds, due to the fact that the very talented Mark T. has picked them out for us. He actually picked out three, but I ruled one out right away because the ratio was too low.

So without further ado, if you were me, which one would you get...

Shape: Cushion
Dimensions: 6.47x5.71x3.85
Carat: 1.08
Color: I
Clarity: VS2
Ratio: 1.13
Table: 54
Depth: 67.4
Girdle: STK-TK
Culet: n/a
Polish: ex
Symmetry: vg
Fluor: No

Price: $3955

OR

Shape: Cushion
Dimensions: 6.49x5.53x3.61
Carat: 1.00
Color: I
Clarity: VS2
Ratio: 1.17
Table: 56
Depth: 65.2
Girdle: TK-VTK
Culet: n/a
Polish: ex
Symmetry: ex
Fluor: No

Price: $3450

I am so torn! I am instantly attracted to the 1.08, only because of the 1:13 ratio. To me, that''s my "perfect" ratio.
But judging by the dimensions it doesn''t look like there would be that much difference between that one and the 1ct? I dunno.
33.gif

I also feel weird telling my BF to spend a few hundred dollars more on such a small detail. Basically I told my BF to call Mark up and ask him which one out-sparkles the other.

So I guess my question is this: Looking at the dimensions, do you think there will be a huge difference in shape? And is that difference worth $500?

Thanks!

Lucky, without pictures, there isn't much that any one of us could tell you about choosing one. But if the pictures looked identical other than the ratios, I would save the $ and get the cheaper one because the size difference is hardly anything! Otherwise, I would choose with my eyes or let Mark choose with his.

Thanks Neatfreak...
I learned a long time ago that you can't tell anything about the way the diamond looks with just numbers,
but thank you for confirming for me that the dimensions are very close to eachother, and the difference may be negligible.
I'm pretty sure my BF will put his money down on the best sparkler.

When judging shape (in Cushions) you need to take into considerations some more factors..., (that''s why your eyes are the best judge of them all!)
For example: the side-bulges of the outline/edge of the shape (rounded vs. straight).
The distance from corner to corner (which makes the shape either squarish or roundish)
The size and shape of the table vs. the size and shapes of the main and corner crown facets...
The size difference between the corner facets and the main facets of the crown...

All these factors are significant to the overall shape of the Cushion. Meaning..., dimensions only give you limited info. regarding the overall shape.
That is WHY these Cushions need to be judged with your eyes for your PERSONAL taste!!!

Hope I am clear,

Sounds like a great plan! I can''t wait to see it!

If it makes you feel better, all we got was a lousy picture before my FI put a deposit down. Then I did get to see it before we actually purcahsed it, but that was the only one Mark brought us and we just said YES! Mark''s eyes are really incredible. We trusted him and it worked out very very well!

Thanks Dia-gem! You''re right....and I completely forgot to take those angles into consideration.

And thanks Neatfreak...I am so freakin excited! I hope my boyfriend is like yours and doesn''t make me wait!

So really, this is all the info I have so far. I''ve seen the GIA plots, and know that both are 8-pav cushion brilliants. And that''s it!

I''m going to tell my BF not to show me the pictures, that way it can be more of a surprise, since I''ve been so involved up till now.

Yay Lucky, this is so exciting!

Of course, I have no idea which one is better since I''ve been asking a gazillion cushion questions myself, but I just wanted to pop in and say CONGRATS on finding two great stones! What a wonderful problem to have!

I don''t have any advice but I do want to let you know I am super excited for you. whooo hooo!

Okay so who's a dummy? I am!!!
I got some stuff wrong with the two stones...which was because I was trying to read it off the GIA report that was sent to us as an attachment from ERD, but it was pretty hard to read. (Think there might be something wrong with his scanner.) So I plugged the report numbers into the GIA report check.
Anywho, here is the "real" info

Cushion Brilliant
Measurements: 6.48 x 5.52 x 3.60 mm
Carat Weight: 1.00
Color Grade: I
Clarity Grade: VS2
Depth: 65.2 %
Table: 56 %
Girdle: Thick to Very Thick, Faceted
Culet: Slightly Large
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None

OR

Cushion Brilliant
Measurements: 6.46 x 5.70 x 3.84 mm
Carat Weight: 1.08
Color Grade: I
Clarity Grade: VS2
Depth: 67.4 %
Table: 54 %
Girdle: Slightly Thick to Thick, Faceted
Culet: Slightly Large
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: None

It's so exciting to know that one of these babies is going to be mine! ::swoon::. I don't know which one yet, so I'm trying to love them both equally.
I'm very excited about the slightly large culets, and I know that CehraBehra would be proud.
9.gif
(Even though I had nothing to do with that. hehe)

BF and I talked about it earlier, and we can't figure out why these diamonds differ so drastically in price. ($500) so he's going to ask Mark about that tomorrow. Seeing as how everything is almost identical, except for the VG symmetry on the 1.08...and how obviously the 1.08 is a little larger. Just not sure that's worth $500 though...or maybe it is, I dunno!
33.gif

So, we've gone over the two diamonds, and I told my BF that it is up to him...but to ask about the price difference and which one sparkles more. Either way, both stones are way under our budget, which is good. I think we'll still go with a temp setting for now though because I can't seem to make up my darn mind!
12.gif
Hopefully the next time I post about these diamonds, one of them will be on my finger.

Skippy and Haven, thank you so much! You guys are too sweet.

I'm so glad to be part of such a nice forum...and I really want to thank everybody for *introducing* me to ERD.

you need pics!!!! But just on that prob pick #1 because it has a wee bit more spread, a little more (imo) classic ratio and140210 a smaller table. But really, the stats on both look fine so.... are they the same type of cut? which is it? modern? antique? modified?

there are two types of 8 pav cushion brilliants.... were the pav mains at 12/3/6/9 or were they kinda like a double x?

I am proud!! I would pick the second one here based on stats alone (and don''t base it on just that lol) because while the tables are both a nicer (IMO) size, the table is still smaller in #2 and the spread a wee bit wider.... but also there is less weight hidden in the girdle. And all of this with a slightly deeper stone my guess is the crown on the 2nd one here is gonna be more impressive if you like that sort of thing :)

hmmm...I think it''s the same facet plot as Neatfreaks.
This one..(I''m pretty sure this is neatfreak''s stone next to it)
http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/files/one%20more%20cushion%20brilliant.jpg

I''m excited to see what it will look like with a slightly large culet! I can''t seem to find another like it on here, but I''m sure there''s one on this forum somewhere.

I''m SO leaning toward the 1.08 as well. I love the ratio, and think it will be very pillowy and classic looking, which is important to me. BUT it''s $500 more than the other one, and I can''t figure out why!
39.gif
Not sure what BF is going to end up doing, as it is his money and he gets the last word, but I have expressed my approval with that stone, for sure...and without even seeing it. lol.

BF''s gonna ask about sparkle and the price difference, and get Mark''s final opinion on those two. Do you have any idea why the 1.08 is so much more?!
I''m really hoping that since both stones are so under our budget, and it will be put in a temp setting anyway, that BF splurges on the 1.08....but he is way more practical than me.

do yourself a favor and speak up about the one you REALLY want. it''s the 1.08 ct so you''d best speak up NOW or the guy WILL go for the least expensive one. in the entire scheme of things, it''s not that much more money and it''s a once in a lifetime, forever thing. don''t expect him to read your mind! since you are already in this decision together, go the distance and speak your heart. that''s what marriage is all about! i''ve learned, though, that the husband does think differently than the wife but if it''s this little thing that will make all the difference to YOU, then speak now or forever hold your peace!

good luck. they both sound lovely

UGGHHHHHHHH I''m going insane!!!!
I think BF put one of the stones on hold today...or flat out bought it....or something, but I don''t know which one!!!

I just got off the phone with him and the convo went like this:

Me: Did you ask Mark about the difference in price?

Bf: No, I didn''t even ask.

Me: You didn''t?? But you talked to him?

Bf: Yeah

Me: Did you ask about sparkle?

Bf: ::sigh:: I''ve got it under control.
2.gif

Me: You don''t have to tell me which one you got, but just tell me if you asked him about sparkle!!!
3.gif

Bf: No...I didn''t ask.

Me:
23.gif
Okay then I obviously know which one you picked.

Bf: You do?
33.gif
41.gif

Me: Well I don''t see you paying an extra $500 without knowing where the cash is going...

Bf: You don''t?
3.gif

Me: ::thinking to myself:: PUT THAT TONGUE AWAY! LOL!!!!

So needless to say I have NO IDEA WHICH ONE HE PICKED! I know I won''t be dissappointed, but part me of me hopes it''s the 1.08. I really CAN''T see him picking that one over the other, but I dunno. He may surprise me! It SOUNDS like he got the 1.08 by this phone conversation, but I know him, and I know that this conversation is not at all indicative of what he ended up choosing. It can still go either way.

::sigh::

So the official wait begins!

I hate to say this but understanding how guys think (at least for those who don''t understand sparkle), most will most likely get the cheaper stone.
39.gif
If you really want the 1.08 stone, please be ask for it NOW. It''ll be too late if you just let it go unless you know 100% that you''ll also be just as happy with the 1.00 cushion.

I''d say, after reading all this, that he probably asked Mark which one looked better and got that one. You made it clear you wanted the "sparkliest" one, I think he''s just messing with you, and trying to keep some of this a surprise...

But I could be wrong.
9.gif
2.gif

I tried to trick the answer out of him when he got home, and he finally fessed up that he hasn''t put any money down on either stone because his bank closed early.

So, I did end up telling him that the 1.08 sounds like the better stone and has the ratio I want--which makes me like that one more without looking at it. He said, "I know!" (in a laughing way). Apparently he IS able to take hints. whoo hoo!

So at least he knows that I prefer the 1.08 as of NOW until we find out more information. (It still could be the worst stone. Who knows.)

Well at least he can take a hint! The waiting is very very hard isn''t it? I''m sure that both are lovely stones though.

Hope you''re pleased with the one he picks.
