My boyfriend and I are interested in purchasing a 1.25 to 1.5 ct yelllow diamond (we are open to any shape except marquise) to be set in a platinum pave halo within a gold basket. We want the color to be EVEN THROUGHOUT, but very faint/light. Any suggestions? Our budget is around $5000.

HELP!

Thanks!

check out diamonds by lauren or fancydiamonds.net

HI:

I don't think you'll get that size center diamond with a 5k budget.. Are you willing to take the time and stalk eBay and diamond bistro for preowned baubles?

is $5000 the budget for just the diamond or the diamond and the setting?

If the budget is for the center stone alone, it is very achievable. Contact someone at www.fancydiamonds.net and tell them what you're searching for. They're brilliant and will take care of you. My 1 ct FIY came from them and it's got gorgeous, even saturation.

Be patient when waiting for a reply though - it's Passover.

Fancydiamonds.net (or you can google Leibisch - same company).

Hi,

I think you should first get an idea of what the color grading on these diamonds mean. For example, I think canary yellow means certain color that is most probably a fancy yellow. The example that Sharon gave is not even in the fancy color category. It is either a UVW or XYZ and will not be the color of the photo. It would be very pale yellow which you may be looking for. A Fancy Light Yellow is also pretty light but you can tell its yellow. So try to find a picture of the color grading system to (maybe someone on here has that for yellow) make sure you understand it.

It's true that within one GIA color grade, say Fancy Intense Yellow, the color can vary tremendously, and therefore the price, even at the same vendor.

Two things about the color can vary.
1. The strength of the color.
2. The influence of other secondary modifying colors

Yellow can be modified by green, orange, brown, and gray.
If there is enough green GIA will bump it into a Fancy Intense Greenish Yellow grade.
But if there is not quite enough green GIA will just leave it in the Fancy Intense Yellow grade even though is clearly has some green.
Brown or gray modifiers can lower the price while green and orange can raise the price of diamonds that carry GIA's pure Fancy Intense Yellow grade.
This makes price comparisons of FCDs with the exact same specs futile.

Next fluorescence comes in many colors and may make a yellow diamond look more or less attractive in certain lighting, and this can also affect the price.

I'll add I have had 20 transactions with Leibish www.fancydiamonds.net and I highly recommend them.
They have accepted returns and have a huge selection (220 yellows alone) and great customer service.
Colored diamonds can change their look in different lighting and environments in person bringing the legitimate question, "What does it really look like?"
After 20 experiences comparing Leibish's photographs to the diamonds in person I can attest that they work vary hard to present accurate color pics.

Blue Nile carries a selection of yellow diamonds. Go to their home page, and click on the top left, and under that menu you'll see an option "Fancy Color Diamonds."

Keep in mind terms sometimes used for some shades of yellow like canary, lemon, or Zimi are not assigned by GIA and some vendors can assign those terms at will.
Buyer beware.

Since you are looking for a "faint" yellow you may save a bunch of money looking for diamond graded toward the Z end of the D-Z scale, not the colored diamond scales.
But keep in mind one GIA-graded R may have yellowish color, while another may have brownish or grayish color.

Thanks everyone for all of this advice! $5k was for the ring and setting. But it looks like we will have to increase the budget if we decide to do this. Thanks again!

Kristaq-

Here is a picture of my .93ct FLY (fancy light yellow). I really wanted a very light (think lemonade color) with a halo mounting and I was able to do it just under 5k. Though I know you are looking for a larger center I just wanted to throw it out there. Here is my thread on my fly with pictures.

Diamond was purchased from Diamonds by Lauren (was wonderful to work with)
Setting is by Whiteflash. They already had this design in their custom gallery so the cost was much less then I anticipated.

I too purchased my fancy yellow at Leibish www.fancydiamonds.net and couldn't be more pleased with their service. They will go out of their way to help you pick what you want, send you additional pix in different light conditions and settings, etc. Moreover, they do so without requesting any commitment that you buy from them, unlike certain other vendors.

Hi Everyone,
kristalq- Personally, I love stones that are in the range just lighter than Fancy Light Yellow- such as Y-Z, W-X and U-V.
The differences between each of these shades- and even between these shades and Fancy Light Yellow is incremental- in other words, a small difference.
In fact may people actually prefer the lighter colors.
Another huge plus is the price- stones start to increase very rapidly once we hit Fancy Light yellow and start getting even darker.
The lower "alphabet" ranges are among the least costly of fine diamonds.

A very good piece of advice is to only consider stones graded by GIA.

Best of luck!!
