I was just given a vintage e-ring. I''m told the stone is an old mine cut. I didn''t know anything about diamonds before becoming engaged, nor did i know anything about vintage jewelry, so this has been a cool learning experience for me. I''ve been reading up on this site and was wondering what the difference is betwwen Old European Cut and Old Mine Cut. Can anyone fill me in?

congratulations on your ring! i love the look of vintage cuts. do you have a picture of yours to share?
here are the differences between the two:

OLD EUROPEAN CUT DIAMOND
The earliest known form of brilliant cut diamond with a very small table, heavy crown and large depth.

MINE CUT DIAMOND
An early form of the brilliant diamond with a squarish-shaped girdle, high crown, small table, deep pavilion, and very large culet.

Thanks, Belle! Here''s a pic:

Old Mine Cut stones are squarish in shape at the corners.

Old European Cut stones are round in shape.

There are a lot of variations for both cuts, that could further identify what actual cut it is.

Many jewelers refer to stone that are OEC as Old Mine Cuts mistakenly.
