Anyone have any idea what is going on with Rockdoc at Consumers Gem Lab? I had GOG send him a stone over two weeks ago - haven''t heard from him or gotten a response to either my calls or emails. If he can''t appraise the stone at this time for whatever reason, then fine, but at least let me know what is happening! This is a bit concerning.

I have called him twice over the last few weeks only to get a voive mail, leave messages and never hear back. I was interested in having him appraise two stones.

Don't kmow what's up.

There was some discussion about this a while back, can't recall if it was here on on the other boards...but the jist was that he had too much work to do and was NOT turning away clients, even if it meant they had to wait weeks, or in this one customer's case..months...to try to get the appraisal. He seems to be creating such detailed reports that he can't keep up with the work.

Anyhow...personally I would not send a stone to him because of that this very thing that has come up before, so if you cannot get a response within a few more days, I would have him return the stone, and/or get the vendor involved to assist in getting the stone back.

Sorry to hear about the delay, IMO it's unacceptable for a stone to be held up this long at an appraiser with no word of communication...esp since vendors bend over backwards to try to get that stone/ring to the customer quickly and the appraiser should not be the holdup. Most esp if you have a proposal timeline as many people do. I understand his work and end results are exceptional, but customer service skills need some help.

Good luck and let us know how things turn out!

Months? NO way. When I was looking at a stone a while back, I made an appointment and got an appraisal done right then and there in a little over an hour by a very reputable guy in the area... Is Roc Doc's appraisal gold leaf? LOL....

Maybe he "finally" went to Brazil for a vacation! He certainly deserves one! He like to go to Brazil so let's hope that he's soaking up a bit of sun

R/T...that would be great..but hopefully not while he's got stones to appraise and with no word of communication to the consumer.

I was going to say! Bring that sucker to someone else!

He may also be ill, he didn't sound so good when we talked to him a few weeks ago and mentioned being in the hospital - so we're hoping on the positive side of things that he's on vacation

GOG sent them the stone. Since he isn't returning calls or emails, how on earth do I (we) get it back?

Anyone have a cell phone / home phone or alternate number for him?

Had he mentioned that it would be unlikely he could do the appraisal, I would have had it sent to someone else. But this is crazy!

I'd call GOG and tell Jonathan to direct him to return the stone immediately ....and hope Roc Doc is around to do so...

When were you going to propose?

I did contact Jonathan - he's been having problems getting through to Rockdoc as well. He hasn't returned any calls or emails to Jonathan either.

Is Rockdoc affiliated with a B&M store?

I want to be sure NOT to send him/them anything.

Why not just use David Atlas? Any negatives against him?

Rocdoc is used by USA certed as their recommended appraiser, and seems to do a very thorough job. He offers for $125

Does Dave atlas do the same stuff- his website doesn't say?
Who else do people reccommend I send a diamond to to get that level of analysis/assurance before I buy?

mm

Richard Sherwood and Dave Atlas are two of the recommended vendors on here often...and I think most online vendors would ship the stone directly to them. The only thing that I know RocDoc has that others appraisers do not is a BrillianceScope. However, someone recently posted one of Rich's appraisals and it looked darn detailed to me! More than our appraiser gave us.

Good luck!

OK- not to get off track...but I just love Dave Atlas!

Dave- I have a crush on you!

All of your posts are so well put and polite and educated!

That said- the problem is getting the stone from RocDoc to another appraiser! I wish you luck and know how frustrated you must be!

Does anyone have a home or cell phone number for Rockdoc?

This is really ridiculous.

Has it occurred to anyone that there may be something wrong?

I've never worked with this man, but it makes sense to me that if he isn't even returning calls to vendors, there is something SERIOUSLY wrong.

ummmm, yes, there could be something seriously wrong....god forbid and I hope not and will say a prayer...but when there is something SERIOUSLY wrong and you are a professional working with high ticket items, there should be a back-up plan. There is no excuse. None. And if I purchased a diamond and can't get in touch with the guy who has got it...you better believe it I'd be PO'd.

WOW Boss (Dave Atlas)...and I thought I was the only one in the office who tried to get a fan base...hmmmmmm, he does write wll though, it's that ever so churning mind of his..I don'y know if the man sleeps, always thinking of something new to get into ...but hey, HELL of a Boss...(sorry, had to join in on the Dave Atlas fan club)...so,would now be a good time to ask for a raise ...hehe..KIDDIN' DAVE!
Had to chime in, see some very familiar names out on this thread!

Signed,

I understand that sickness is a fact of life, and I hope he isn't sick or injured. However, there must be some provision or plan in place to at least return the diamonds to their respective owners. He's built up a reputable business - I would seriously doubt he would want to throw away all the trust and goodwill he has generated over the years with consumers and jewelers.

- Mark

I don't have any contact info to help, but if you do get the stone back, I can highly recommend Rich Sherwood's work and timely responses. Who ever you choose, confirm availability and timing before you send the stone a second time!

This thread makes me very nervous. I haven't spoken to Rockdoc for a few months but this is just not like him - if he was going away or was sick he would have atleast told the vendors with whom he is working at present.

We plugged his address into search on MSN and came up with a couple of other businesses in his building - we called but everyone seems to have gone for the day. We'll try again tomorrow and ask someone to go and see if he is OK.

Hopefully nothing is seriously wrong. Doesn't anyone in the industry have his home # or a more personal contact with him??

Doesn't he have help in the office, someone who would contact customers IF something had happened?

His phone number no longer has his voice on the answering machine, but instead some generic computerized voice mail voice. Not sure if there was a technical problem or what. His web site and fax number appear to still be functioning. When was the last time someone heard from him / received anything from him?

The generic computerized voice mail could mean nothing more than a power outage. That is the way my Mom's answering machine defaults after the power is cut off to the machine.

I called him about 3 1/2 weeks ago. I was considering having him appraise a potential purchase.

He answered the phone and asked if he could call me back in 15 minutes. He never called. I called him again later that day and left a message. Again he never called.

I then called Richard Sherwood. Richard called me back right away and was extremely responsive. Even though RockDoc was a 20 minute drive for me and Richard was a r/t 8 hour drive, I had Richard appraise the stone. Richard was wonderful!

Unfortunately, I have a feeling that all of this could really harm Rockdoc's business. It's one thing to make customers concerned and unhappy, but it is another thing to have jewelers not trust you due to reliability, or just wondering if they will see their stones again.

princesshunter:

You need to calm down a bit - you seem to be escalating things out of proportion - which jeweler said they did not trust RockDoc, and who is worried about not seeing their stones again?

It seems you're impuning someone's business, and I don't see that you have provided any evidence to back up your statements.

It's entirely possible he has been taken suddenly ill, and hasn't been able to contact anyone about it yet. I'm sure Jonathan will follow up on the situation - after all, it's his diamond.

Lighten up a bit until you get some info - a guy with the Rock's reputation does not roll over after many years in the business to pull some cheap trick on one of this customers.

Rock Doc wouldn't just vanish and stop returning phone calls unless something was wrong. We agree with Garry, people need to relax and stop worrying about the return of a diamond or two, we send diamonds to Bill all the time and wouldn't worry in the slightest if we weren't able to get a stone back from him for a week or two or even three while he sorted out something in his personal life or recovered from being ill. We spoke with Bill recently and he "really" was not feeling very well, we're privy to the information regarding his illness, but we are NOT going to get into it here beyond saying that Bill could probably use our support and our prayers right now and certainly does not need people thrashing his excellent reputation in public over nothing. Please leave tracking down Bill and determining his current state of affairs to people in the trade who know how to reach him and start expressing some wishes for his improved health instead of instigating unwarranted attacks against his good name. Do you see "any" of the vendors or the other independent GIA Graduate Gemologists expressing concern about the diamonds? Is Jonathan up here freaking out over his stone? No - so drop it. This thread is an embarrassment to this forum and it should be "erased" and replaced with a Get Well Soon - We Hope That You're Feeling Better thread if anything at all...
