Hi All,
I''d like to get some opinions on what you all think would look good for 1.38 ct round stone. I am concerned with the proper proportion of stone size to band thickness. For example, I think that the 2mm bands look great w/ .75- 1 ct. stones, but I am thinking that a larger stone might look better w/ a 3mm to 4mm band. Thoughts???

Any pictures (on hand) would be great/very helpful.

BTW, I am looking for a simple "tiffany" solitare setting.

Thanks so much,
Catherine Ann

I don't think there is a "proper" ratio of stone size and band width. Some people like the style of wide rings, some people like to showcase their bling with a skinny band. I like skinny - 2 or 2.5 mm bands. That being said, I personally don't think a Tiffany-style ring would look right if it was more than 3 or 4 mm wide. But again, style is subjective.

If you have long skinny fingers you might want to get a wider band. It''s just a better balance between your hand size & the ring, it looks more proportionate. But then again you can still get a thinner band because you will be adding a wedding band which will add some bulk to the ring & make it look more substantial.

I suggest you really try on some rings and get an idea for the ''ratio'' that you feel looks best on your hand.

My stone is a 7.20mm and I''ve got a 2.9mm engagement ring. I wish the ring was just a bit thinner aka 2.3 or 2.5mm but the 2.9mm ring still makes the stone look pretty big. Alot of people think it''s a 1.5c or just call it a ''big stone''...hehee.

I am not a fan of thicker settings though, and even if a thicker setting looked good on my hand, Idon''t know that I would have considered it. So sometimes its not solely what looks good on your hand in general, but what you really prefer as well. Luckily my ring looks nice on my hand, because I didn''t want a thicker setting. But don''t forget you will be adding a w-ring to it as well (unless this is just a one-ring thing), so consider that as well. At first it took a bit to get used to the extra width on my hand with both rings but now I prefer it to the e-ring as a standalone. Also consider the entire width in comparison to your center stone, sometimes too much width on a band can dwarf a stone if the band overwhelms the finger.

But again, you probably need to just go in and try on a bunch of items to really get a feel for a) what you really like and b) what you really like on your hand.

Good luck!

Hi Mara,
I have a 7.2 mm ring too, what size is your finger? Well a 7.2 is the diameter of an average cut 1.50 carat so you can say it''s 1.50! Also what type of ering setting do you have & what type of wedding band, diamond or plain?

I looked at lots of settings on the web...it''s a good place to start , but you really have to see them in person....with your stone.....I was so sure of what I wanted, but then it just didn''t work for me when I saw the combination of setting and my stone...I picked something different, and I love it....the setting just made my stone look even better!
You also have to consider whether you will wear a band with it, or whether you will wear just one ring that "stands alone." I have a friend who wears only a diamond set with lots of bagguettes....bigger, and wider than most settings....but wouln''t look good next to a band........Try them on...it''s great fun! There are lots of options out there.

actually rosy, a 7.2mm width is actually a well-cut 1.30c stone while a 1.5c would have a diameter of around 7.45-7.50mm (ideally!).

anyhow, my finger size is a 6. I have my pictures in the Show me the Ring from a while back...you can run a search to see...and I think the 'hand' picture of both my rings together is in our 'Married with Stories to Tell' thread which I think may have been in the Brides area of the site. But anyhow, a search will show you if you put in my name as author and that subject.

My e-ring is 2.9mm and my w-ring is a flush sitting 2.3mm. Both rings actually somehow add to the center stone of my e-ring and make it look a little bit bigger than when it was just on an e-ring...didn't really expect that. It could be because I have melee on the bands so the sparkle is noticeable.
