All of this talk about the government lifting the shelter in place has me thinking...will you leave your house when they lift it? What will make you feel safe enough to leave your home?

My first instinct is to stay inside until there is a vaccine, but I’m not sure that is realistic. Maybe I will wait until there is widespread antibody testing.

I’m not sure homemade masks are enough. What do you think?

I agree. Homemade masks aren’t enough but we can only do the best we can.

I guess I’ll take it day by day and can’t predict what I’ll do in the future. My best guess is I will start “normal” life as soon as NY and NJ get the OK from our governors. That’s my best guess.

If we are fortunate enough that my DH still has his job when they want him back he’s going to go. And we can’t wait for a vaccine as it might be 18months to 2 years away. :/

When I am required to physically return to my office outside of home.

A Vaccine.

I am in France, so our lockdown is much stricter than anything I have heard from the US (including NY...which is disturbing) and my family in Germany. It's really strange how wrong it feels to go out ATM: no one is on the streets.

We can get groceries and help the elderly and work if no WFH is possible. One can also exercise before 10 or after 7pm or for for a walk with the kids one hour a day within 1km of one's home once a day. We need to sign a paper that states why we are out beforehand.

I was shocked when I heard people were gathering for Easter in certain German States. It's legal up to ten people. Here it's fine up to 500€ /person and I couldn't believe anyone would take that risk (especially in families with multiple healthcare workers in different hospitals).
I wouldn't risk anyone's health by meeting up.
People seem to always push right up right the legal limit without any sense for the situation at all.

So I guess I'll be doing social distancing for much longer if I don't think the situation is safe.

When the curve has flattened, and they relax the restrictions, we’ll go out for walks, but I don’t think we’ll be rushing back to the supermarkets. We’ve found other sources for our food, so we’ll stick with those.

We’ll see friends who’ve also been in isolation, but we won’t be going anywhere where there are likely to be crowds.

This. And I'd also like an antibody test to come back positive for having had it -- thank you very much!

(Yes... I know... sometimes I want a lot out of life!)

I agree. Once the restrictions start being lifted, I will be ok resuming more normal.

I am not ok waiting for a vaccine. Creating one could be up to 2 years. But how long will it take to vaccinate the world? Years realistically. We run out of the flu vaccine every year. I am not willing to sit in my house for the next 4 to 5 years.

I've been going out on a very limited basis to service my clients while maintaining strict social distancing and contactless transfer of pets. However, in an abundance of caution, I am not servicing my very elderly clients, just in case I am asymptomatic, but I have gone shopping for some of them who are all alone. Oddly, my clients are happier to see me than ever before.

When I can get an antibody test. Not going to jump for a new vaccine that has been fast tracked. They keep saying at least 18 months but there is no way they will be able to vaccinate everyone in 18 months. We see how prepared we have been so far so I don't have a lot of optimism going forward.

I hope that wearing masks becomes more commonplace. I remember its quite common in asia for people to wear masks.
I've still been going grocery shopping and whatnot, just taking extra precautions. I will likely continue with what I'm doing for the foreseeable future.

I feel the same. It is frustrating that everyone isn't wearing a mask because they are putting others at risk when they don't wear one. If everyone wore one the transmission of Covid 19 would fall dramatically I think.

Good point, @StephanieLynn . If my whole family gets tested positive for Antibodies I'd be out and about as well.

Yes, I think it's a good reasonable first step, DH seems to think we've already had it (we were all sick the beginning of the year minus my older son) and it was unlike any sickness I've had before. I actually thought it might be whooping cough but there wasn't the expected sound, just lots of coughing and struggling to catch my breath.

It would be interesting to see if he was right.

I’m not leaving until I can safely get to a hospital without the medical system being completely overwhelmed. I am in one of the “high risk” categories so I’m just not willing to chance it. This will likely have consequences on multiple levels.

I had a deep cough that settled into my chest in mid February. It came with two straight days of chills. Lasted about a week and then it was gone. We all had it and my children actually ended up developing other symptoms but the doctor just classified it as an upper respiratory infection.

Yup same thing here, I had the chills one whole day, like shaking so badly I was moving the entire bed, gastro problems followed and then this coughing that lasted weeks. Never had coughing like that and this was late January all the way through February.

Glag you all recovered okay!

HI:

Yes confusing times. I just hope people CONTINUE to wash their hands and sanitize phones and tablets, don't go to work when sick and sneeze into arms not others faces. These are basic infection control practices that have been taken for granted or outright ignored. We should not return to old ways.

Daily mantra: Lest we forget.

cheers-Sharon

I'm high risk, so I'll find it extremely difficult to leave the house. I probably won't (except for my infusions which I have to do every 6 weeks). I don't NEED to go out. If lockdown is lifted in the next 2 months, I won't be going out yet. In fact I think I'm starting to get a wee bit agoraphobic.

You're being smart and you have to do what works best for you. My rheumatologist wants me to get blood work and do a 24 hour urine test and that involves going to the lab. Which I won't be doing anytime soon. I will take it day by day and re evaluate as the weeks progress. When I think the risk is minimal I will do what tests I need done. It's stressful but it is what it is. I have risk factors as well (though not as severe as you @lyra) and I have to do what I feel is best for me. For you it is clear cut and for me maybe a little less so but we will do the best we can with the info we have.

And I get what you mean about being a bit agoraphobic. I definitely can see that happening to me too.

When work tells me to show up. Otherwise I am home with an occasional trip to the grocery store. Stupid battery went dead in my car because it's been sitting too long.

I agree with the requirement to return to the office. This will be the first step. My concern is a reinfection if we all return too soon.

Praying our company pays for a deep clean and sterilization before having employees back.

Probably when the restrictions on international travel has been lifted.

DK :))

I have to go to the store more than I want- I am still doing cake orders and I'm super busy because no one can have a birthday party but they want their kids to have cakes. I got on the interstate the other day for the first time in a month. SO weird....

Until i find a job we will pretty much carry on like before, which isn't much different to know, but maybe Gary's son or dsughyer might visit

I still don't want to bring even a cold home to Gary

This might be of interest to those of you who think you may have had it.

DS’s friend and her 3 children have all been quite ill, they’ve recently been tested and all are positive, including her husband, who hasn’t been ill at all and had zero symptoms.

I hope they have an antigen test soon, as we think we may have already had it too, so would be interested to know for sure.

If the government says I can go to a restaurant, I will go to a restaurant.

I trust them so far.

I sent my kid to school until they told us to keep him home. I went to restaurants until they shut them down.

It's not that I am blindly following the government but I think our government is doing ok. They are screaming at us to stay home now, every day there is someone nagging at us to stay home and stay away from other people so if they tell us we can go to restaurants and see my sister I will believe them.
