Along the lines of Asscherisme''s recent thread, I''m curious what trends you went along with and which ones passed you by.

I''ll start, but my answer is boring. I''ve never been into trends, so I''ve never worn crocs, UGGS, etc. Personally, I''ve never understood the fascination people have with crocs. I''ve heard they''re comfy but they''re just odd. To me.

How about you?

wow my memory is not that long but ... stretch pants. jelly bracelets. keds. safety pinned jeans. colored socks matching your earrings. big pouffy hair. aqua net.

those are the most MEMORABLE mostly because of the photographic proof of those WTH moments.

i can't think of too many recent ones where i 'followed' a trend. designer jeans maybe. iphone owner. balenciaga?? haha. i would follow the christian louboutin trend except i am too cheap and don't like heels.

no on crocs, i don't like them either, though my mom wears hers to garden which seems like a good idea. no on uggs, esp with short miniskirts.

i think also as i get older, i tend to know less about 'trends' so i can't really follow them anyway.

I rarely follow trends because I''m a cheapskate and I like to buy things that last. Also, my body type isn''t very trend-friendly. It seems like a lot of trends are made for up and down young women in their early 20''s. I''m 25, but I have what I call a 50''s pin-up body. I''m not hippy, but I''m definitely busty.

One trend that I do love though is the return of gold jewelry! I''m excited for this one :-)

I don''t usually jump on the trend wagon although I think that we all do to some degree because if the stores sell it we have no choice but to buy what is being sold. Like how everyone says that white gold is a trend. I don''t know if I like it because it is a trend, if it is because that is what we are being sold, all I know is that is what I like.

I don''t own crocs, uggs, I don''t even know what else is even trendy.

I can tell you that the kids these days are driving me nuts. What is with them? The boys wearing the skinny jeans, the crotch on the jeans doesn''t hit in the correct spot, they look uncomfortable, then they wear those bulky shoes with them. I dont get it. And the hair! All shaggy and in their eyes. Doesn''t that annoy them?

I was trying to come up with more trends but crocs and uggs were the only ones I could think of. Mara, I never got into any of the 80s trends either. I did wear a lot of pink, grey, and that funky shade of blue. I had a lot of clothes in those colors. Oh, actually, I just thought of one something. I used to LOVE Alyssa Milano and I wanted a perm just like hers. So I got one, and man, it was a big mistake! If that''s a trend, I guess I bought into one. Never was a fan of jellies, jelly bracelets, scrunchies, etc. It''s funny, I didn''t mean to mention all thing 80s but those are automatically what I think of when I hear the word "trend." Odd.

omg i just thought of one that i went horribly into with both feet. SUN-IN. turned my hair orange and my mom made me grow it out.

and geometric patterned clothing. oh mens rugby shirts on girls.

and yes whenever i hear trends i almost only think of 80s.

oh does 'new kids on the block obsessive love' count as a trend follower?

Sure, New Kids counts. Okay, you got me! That''s one I did fall into. I LOVED Joey! When he sang "Please Don''t Go Girl," I thought he was singing to me. Ha! I was too old for the sheets and the NKOTB accessories that you could buy, but I did love their music.

Okay, and yeah, I did own a few rugby shirts that I think I got at Benetton.

Oooh, swatches! I had a pink one and a pink swatch guard. Okay, so I guess I did like a few trends.

How about things that are more current? Anyone have ideas?

Ok so I've been wearing Uggs for the last seven/eight winters. Does it count if you wore something before it was a trend (lol)? I can't help myself, they're so comfy. Anyways, I buy and wear things because I like them not because everyone else has them. My mom has always been that way too, for example my mom got engaged in the 80s and her e-ring is white gold. A trend from the 80s that came back in style in the last few years are legging. So far I've resisted them. In high school girls would wear dark leggings with long sweaters that just reached the bottom of their butt (no pants!)... I definitely never did that.

I LOVE Uggs, but hate Crocs and will never wear them (I don''t have a problem with people who do, but personally I just never understood the love for them and I have no desire to buy/wear them).

Japanese hair straightening - when I was in high school SO many people were doing it and finally I did too. I loved it for a while, but eventually grew my hair out and stopped doing it. As easy as it made everything (washing hair and knowing it would be perfect every single time) it just was killing my hair. Now I kinda like that I can leave it curly sometimes and straighten it when I want to.

Can''t think of too many trends off the top of my head other than those...

Hate Uggs ( I am older) and LOVE Crocs..wear them to work every day (medical). I have the "popular" haircut right now (the short one like Victoria Beckham) and I never got into white gold (allergic anyways). Stayed with my RB diamond from 1979. Since then there was marquise (1980''s-90''s) Princess, and now cushion. Don''t own any of them (although I would LOVE a cushion). I DO own journey and 3 stone jewelry. I don''t own a halo.

Uggs and crocs, I have both, but for practical reasons, I would never wear them out of the house.

I''ve never had a perm, and I will never own a ''pandora'' or similar bracelet.

I''ve been thinking about getting a tattoo, but I doubt I will get around to it. And I did have my navel pierced when I was much younger but let it close over after a couple of years.

I have a facebook account, but will never ''twitter'' whatever the hell that is.

How about you?
Ralph Loren polos
501 jeans
gold neckchains
STILL WEAR THEM TODAY!

Well, for clothes, I really like the timeless stuff, but will sometimes get something "trendy" if it fits and there is no real alternative

Things I have gone along with
1) I have an i-phone
2) I have a "CUV" - an SUV that is based on a car model, slightly smaller and better on gas
3) ballet flats - I always loved these and am happy they are in style. I will continue to wear them when they are not

Things I have avoided
1) skinny jeans - my hips were not made for them
2) cowboy hats - they were in when I was a teenager, I refused
3) Uggs, crocs - they just aren''t my style. I do however have Dansko''s which are trendy in the health care profession
4) "speed bump" hair

I think it was more important when I was in tweens and teens to follow trends. I remember butterfly hair clips, bell-bottem strechy pants and platform shoes (brief 70''s trend), army pants, jeans with holes in the knees and plad shirts (grunge) etc.

Now that I''m in my 20''s I don''t buy into any trends because I know they don''t last and as a student I can''t really aford to buy clothes I''ll have to throw away at the end of the season. Also, being ''stylish'' is not important to me at all. I like classic clothing I can wear untill it dies and needs to be replaced. I focus more of finding stuff that suits my shape and makes me feel and look good. Alot of the trends are designed for teenaged stick figgures and not made for women with hips and boobs.

I find myself looking at people wearing some of these trends, like the younbg guys in skinny jeans and massive sneekers or baggy eveything with pants that start at the crotch and boxers handing out and alot of fake "bling", and I think to myself "In 10 years you''ll be looking at pictures of yourself in these clothes and cringe".

hehe anyone buy any of the SNUGGIES???? LOL
I saw them at Costco so they must be a huge trend if Costco is carrying them.
face20.gif

Hmmm, I did the whole Michael Jackson and Madonna clothes thing as a kid and Guess jeans as a kid. Now, I am more classic sort of clothing and jewelry. I do have a few pairs of cargo pants so that was trendy. I can say I am w/SDL; I hate to waste money on things that will be out of style fast. I tend to play it safe overall though.

I totally agree with you about the skinny jeans on guys (with the big shoes) and the long shaggy hair. UGH! Don''t they realize they look really silly (They don''t care they''re in style right?)? Honestly I can''t even laugh at it being so ridiculous. It just grates on nerves and I don''t know why.

Hrmm.. I don't think of it as trendy or not trendy. I think of it as stuff I like, or stuff I don't like. Skinny jeans? Not for me. Emo hair? not for me. Uggs? Well, I just bought my first pair because I wanted some. Not cuz someone else wore them or people think they are cool (or uncool).

I dunno. I just like what I like!! *shrug*

And, I do have an iPhone, WHICH I RESISTED.. and wish I hadn't. It is the best. thing. evarrrrr.

Let's see...I've got Uggs, a Le Pliage bag from Longchamps (though I will say I got it before they were cool - it's one of the few bags I can't kill!)...that's about it. I don't do skinny jeans (I'm too curvy to look good in them), or anything boy-cut. I've got an hourglass figure, and the vast majority of trends look like total cr*p on me. I do like the angled bob that's in style now, and I'm hoping it stays in long enough for me to grow my hair out.

ETA: And I have a Snuggie! Man I love that thing.

I''ve never worn crocs or uggs....

....but I''m not going to lie I love my leggings

The snuggie is not a trend! It is a classic wardrobe staple!

I was just saying to someone here at work - - yesterday, as a matter of fact - - that being older gives you the freedom to embrace your inner curmudgeon.

Trends in fashion, decor, food, house styles, music, and all other things pop cultural, no longer affect me. I could care less. And that is a powerful, liberating feeling.

For example, (and please know that I have no wish to offend anyone''s personal taste, this is merely MY opinion for myself), I''m TIRED to death of white decor. White slipcovers, white beadboard, white cabinets, white woodwork. Or shabby chic distressed furniture. Chippy paint. Burlap anything. With or without that ''touch of color''. With or without the ubiquitous black painted accent piece. Or the beaded chandelier. Bird cages. Industrial sconces. Ad nauseum. As per the example given.

Good grief Holly, ha ha ha. I don''t know anyone, who has that decor. Uhhhhhh, we do have a bird cage though. My little Ringneck lives in it.

It's all over Blogland. 80% of the decorating blogs seem to feature this style. These are not magazine pictures; they really are people's homes. It boggles my mind. Here's another example - - an actual family room. (I hope I didn't just violate anyone's copyrights.) It isn't that it is BAD decorating. It's just that I keep thinking someone will come up with something new, different, interesting, Full Of Color, for cryin' out loud.

. Please give me some color.

We just recently painted our family room. We have two accent walls that we added color too. Love it.

Did the perm a while back. Hellooooo nineties!
I loved yellow gold and still do, just hardly ever wear it lately.
I still love Uggs!
I remember wearing those shiny tights under big shirts in Jr. High!
Scrunchies! I had boxes and boxes of them!

The skinny jeans on boys these days - now that you mention it - I don''t get it! They''re like Peter Pan tights, but in denim with a zipper? I guess on boys, it''s cool. It''s the Jonas Brothers look. But on GROWN MEN...Yowza! Russell Brand in the skinny jeans hosting the MTV VMAs was painful to watch! But even Green Day was wearing them! Noooooo!!!

Crocs, Uggs, leggings, moccasins, bodysuits, catsuits... all stupid.
1.gif

oooh Holly I love those rooms!!!!
3.gif
Well not the birdcages or the victorian turned furniture but the overall scheme. and that first pic, those bookcases, swoon!

I love color too but not in main rooms like family or living room...I am all about neutrals. I keep the color for bedrooms or offices or something where you can punch it up. But for main rooms where people spend a lot of time I am all about the colors that relax me and neutrals do that. Our living room is all espressos, light browns and whites, though I did punch it up with some green pillows. Rebel.

My gf absolutely loves color and painted all the walls in her house oranges and terra cottas. While I think it's so fun to visit her, I think it would stress me out to live there. I am hugely affected by my surroundings. Blue bathrooms are so relaxing. I saw a great looking nursery that was done in orange and white, and all I could think of was that I hoped the kid had a mellow nature. hehee.

Open plan living; I simply don''t understand it.

My rule is not to buy anything in fashion. As they say; if it has never been in fashion it can never go out of fashion. It is why I will always drive a volvo (

).

What''s with the all white rooms? I don''t get that at all. It seems depressing (like a hospital?). It would get dirty so fast. How would you keep a place like that clean (though I suppose if you can afford to decorate like that you can afford a cleaning service all the time)?

Holly, I hear where you''re coming from. That French country/shabby chic/industrial look is really hot right now. I don''t so much mind the designs (it''s very pretty), but it does feel a bit contrived. It runs the risk of becoming tired and dated. I''m actually more offended by bad Tuscany "themes". You know those with mustard rooms with bad murals painted on the walls and faux shutters.
