oooh Holly I love those rooms!!!!
3.gif
Well not the birdcages or the victorian turned furniture but the overall scheme. and that first pic, those bookcases, swoon!

I love color too but not in main rooms like family or living room...I am all about neutrals. I keep the color for bedrooms or offices or something where you can punch it up. But for main rooms where people spend a lot of time I am all about the colors that relax me and neutrals do that. Our living room is all espressos, light browns and whites, though I did punch it up with some green pillows. Rebel.

My gf absolutely loves color and painted all the walls in her house oranges and terra cottas. While I think it''s so fun to visit her, I think it would stress me out to live there. I am hugely affected by my surroundings. Blue bathrooms are so relaxing. I saw a great looking nursery that was done in orange and white, and all I could think of was that I hoped the kid had a mellow nature. hehee.
Oh, I like rooms that soothe. I couldn''t do the red, orange, purple, egg yolk yellow walls; I like warm neutrals. But the white, black, beige combo seems cold and sterile. I get a chill just looking at it. Nothing about those rooms says comfort to me. It doesn''t invite me to stay awhile, kick off my shoes, lean on a pillow. Here''s another vignette that doesn''t appeal to me:

what is this.jpg

What are uggs?

I think that answers it. I''m 24 years old. Spent a lot of time with my grandparents.

Don''t have the first clue what uggs or skinny jeans or most of the other stuff listed is. I''ve been told repeatedly to "get with the times" and "start acting my age".

I''m sure the stuff around me influences my choices, but I know what I like and stick to it. I don''t like stuff that is uncomfortable or gets in the way. The super textured tiled floors look impossible to clean.
If I like it, I buy it. When we paint, we pick the color we want.

Beats the heck out of me! I don''t think there is a theme there - - except lack of color. Ergo the brown shoes and white eggs.

Well Holly, for a housewarming gift for you, I can send you some of my old shoes to hang on your new wall.

I keep imagining what is going through the minds of these decorating gals hubbies. . . . "Crap. More white slipcovers. Why is there a pair of shoes hanging on the wall when I can''t put my feet on the sofa?? A cage?? Honey - when did we get a bird??? Wait, there isn''t a bird in there. . . sh-t, I''ll bet the cat ate it. "

I dont get the bright tight pants the teens want to wear now. My 13 year old talked me into buying him a couple pairs. He''s skinny and tall so they were ''ok''.
He didn''t wear one pair of shorts all summer! Craziness!

I dont get pink or purple hair, it''s funky and makes girls stand out, but I guess it''s not me. I dont get tatoos either, I know a lot of girls have ink and love it,
so I dont mean to offend, I just dont get it, I dont think there is much I would want to have on my body forever.

Not crazy about the EMO thing either. Had a son that did that too. He is so handsome and has dyed his hair black for years. Not a really big stretch because it is
dark brown anyway but..

Love love love fashion...love handbags, love shoes! love jewelry, love diamonds!

I don''t usually jump on the trend wagon although I think that we all do to some degree because if the stores sell it we have no choice but to buy what is being sold. Like how everyone says that white gold is a trend. I don''t know if I like it because it is a trend, if it is because that is what we are being sold, all I know is that is what I like.

I don''t own crocs, uggs, I don''t even know what else is even trendy.

I can tell you that the kids these days are driving me nuts. What is with them? The boys wearing the skinny jeans, the crotch on the jeans doesn''t hit in the correct spot, they look uncomfortable, then they wear those bulky shoes with them. I dont get it. And the hair! All shaggy and in their eyes. Doesn''t that annoy them?

I totally agree with you about the skinny jeans on guys (with the big shoes) and the long shaggy hair. UGH! Don''t they realize they look really silly (They don''t care they''re in style right?)? Honestly I can''t even laugh at it being so ridiculous. It just grates on nerves and I don''t know why.
I find this hilarious! Ahhh, teens...

I work in the Bronx and the style here is very NY-Urban. On my way to work, the last year or so, I''ve noticed this skinny-jeans-on-guys trend and think it''s so funny. They still wear the big boots/sneakers but the jeans are so tight. That''s all fine and good, but why do they still let their jeans hang below their butts? Can still see the boxers, except the jeans are tight! It looks so weird. At least my generation let their jeans drop because they were too big!

I blame it all on Kanye! Oh, and the big reading glasses from the late 80''s-early 90''s - those are in again? I hope they make a very short comeback.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah. I guess the good thing about being too broke to follow the trends is that...well, I''m not following the trends. I''m just not into the whole look that you''re describing. I tend to like comfy, warm, eclectic stuff. Less plan, more "I took a trip around the world and my suitcase exploded." Dang. I guess that means I can''t be one of the cool, trendy kids.

I don't concsciously follow any trends, unless it is flattering! (with clothes). I don't get those super high bondage shoes that everyone's wearing now--looks so uncomfortable and you know those will be out in a second. Just like cowboy boots from a few years ago (good for halloween costumes now I spose).

With home decorating, I definitely do my own thing but get influenced by the trends somewhat, since I don't have the interior decorating gene! Where I am, the "pottery barn" look is in, and I'm ok with the general idea of that (soothing earth tones, neutral), but overall I like elegant and simplified (toned down French country chic) which is timeless (and stems from my own mother's style and places we have lived). The all white look is a bit extreme (never seen it except in Hamptons/beach houses where it def works in my opinion) but I like an all white kitchen if done right (with some contrast in countertop etc).

For whoever said they can't stand the Tuscan look, I hear YA! It's too forced...you're not in old Italy and all the faux effects in the world is not going to change that!

JMHO.

That is the problem with tatoos. They are on your body FOREVER.
I''m at work right now trying to hide my giggles.

Grandma always talked about getting a tatoo. Picture this 60 year old woman with BRIGHT white hair (I tell you, it glowed at night when lights hit it just right), perfectly white teeth, gold crowns, BIG diamonds. Manicured hands. She was beautiful. Classic and elegant.

But she wanted a tatoo. This was the main conversation over Thanksgiving dinner one year. She wanted a tatoo of a hula dancer "right here" (she pulled her shirt down and pointed at her breast). She had talked before but never so specific. The conversation turned to the down side of tatoos. Specifically what happens to them as a body ages. More specifically, just how that hula dancer would look as she wrinkled and her breasts began to sag to her waist.

I dont like trendy because it doesnt last.. I like classic pieces I can wear for years. I guess I''m pretty conservative that way.
word.

Embarrassing trends that I bought into:
Umbro shorts
Tightrolling jeans
Very short shorts with very large shirts (tucked in and bloused)
Layered scrunchie socks

Totally still rocking it trends, will continue to do so until I'm totally lame if I'm not already because I can't let go:
Uggs
Crocs - never had the clogs, but I HEART my strappy heeled crocs and strappy croc sandals
dark wash jeans/bootcut jeans
Coach purses
Decorating with brown/pastel blue combos, stripes and square designs (when DH and I got married, I couldn't find ANYTHING that we both liked that wasn't some sort of stripe or square pattern)
Mis-matched wedding set
Long, layered necklaces
Pointy toe boots and heels
Layered shirts
"Dressy" flip flops
Capri pants
Tankini swimsuits

Waiting for the comeback:
Small handbags (my generation is going to have serious back issues)
Handbags with long shoulder straps (I don't know why I miss these, but sometimes I do)
Gouchos (cried when those went out - still have a dressy pair that I kinda keep in rotation)
Primary colors for bedding - it is SO hard to find a great comforter or duvet in bright colors!
Tiny cell phones - I miss the days where my cell actually fit in my pocket. I had one that was "Zoolander" sized, and it was fabulous

Don't get:
Decorating - "imitation artifacts" - like Holly, I don't get the newly-made, vintage-looking bird cage, or a gold-leafed fleur delis wall hanging, or the terracotta sponge painting made to look like the wall is deteriorating (in a house that was built in 1998). Am I weird in thinking that the decor should more or less match the style of the home?

Really tall baseball caps/not curving the bill - I remember when you'd get a baseball cap like that as some sort of promotional deal and be horrified because it looked so awful.

Tattoos - on the face. Strangely, I've seen several of these in the past few days, on rather young people.

Not cutting a little boy's hair. I've read more than my share about gender stuff, but I don't know why it drives me crazy when I see celebrities not cutting their boys' hair. It just looks so scraggly/hippie. A child looking like a hippie is strange to me.

Elmorton, I could have totally written this post especially the bit about brown/blue and sans the Crocs.

I seriously don''t get skinny jeans for men, emo hair (guys again), facial tattoos, and sometimes, facial piercings. I never understood the middle-aged soccer mom fascination with PINK and sweatpants with words emblazoned upon their rears. Maybe it''s just Dallas.
3.gif

And, OMG, will someone please end the trend of men singing like they have a dill pickle stuck in their mouths (Creed, Nickleback, etc.)?!?

I have a pair of Crocs. Butt ugliest shoes ever, but boy are they comfy. I wear them to work sometimes, and in the house as slippers during the winter.

Lots of tattoos and making plans for several more. I love them!

When I see the white on white rooms I think these people don''t have kids. Or pets. Or they have a full time cleaning staff. We have white appliances and that''s enough to give me heartburn trying to keep clean.

Text messaging was a trend I never thought I''d get, until about 6 months ago, now I use it fairly frequently.

Don''t get:
Tattoos
Crocs
Uggs
Skinny Jeans
Belly button piercings

No I don''t really do trends... but of course I do if I live inside the US culture!

I did wear those leggings, but when prego they emphasized the part of my body that hadn''t gained weight!!!

I do like the plastic/jelly bracelets...

And I do wear crocs -- but only inside the house.

And we don''t have any white walls inside our house.

These are great! It''s funny how particular we all are about certain things. I''m not a huge shopper and I hate to part with money, so I don''t understand the bug hoopla around designer this or that (bags, clothes, etc.). I wouldn''t really consider designer labels a trend, but they''re not something I''m interested in.

That''s it! I was wondering how to describe the horrible music/singing (if you could call it that) of those groups. That''s hilarious....pickle in their mouth. Nickleback really gets on my nerves.

What''s the point of Mantyhose? It''s bad enough that women wear them (man are they uncomfortable).

As I grow older I get less and less into trends.

When I was a teenager, however, WATCH OUT!
I'll let you guess in which decade I grew up based on these trends that I did follow in my teens:
- Bad perm after bad perm after bad perm
- Sun-in
- Aqua Net hairspray
- leggings with huge sweatshirts or t-shirts (gathered together in one corner by one of those plastic things)
- Jelly bracelets
- Slam books
- I dressed as the following for three consecutive Halloweens: Cindy Lauper, Madonna, Paula Abdul
- This is too embarrassing, I can't go on. You get the picture, and it was neon orange.
2.gif

Trends I've bought into as an adult:
- Uggs. I really love them.
- I bought a Snuggie and I loved it so much that I just bought a second one. Yeah, that's right, I have two.
- I buy a few pairs of the "in" shoe style each season, which usually has something to do with the shape of the toe box, anyway.
- I have a Facebook account.
- I have tattoos, but I don't see one of the oldest rituals in the history of humankind to be trendy, sorry. That is, unless you have a tattoo of an Internet meme or something.

Trends I haven't bought into as an adult:
- House: Refused to buy a kitchen with the very trendy granite counters/cherry cabinet combo. Definitely wanted something more classic that isn't going to look totally dated in five years.
- Crocs. No offense, but my feet are ugly enough as is, they don't need any more help.
3.gif

- I *almost* went for the halo e-ring but opted for a solitaire, instead.
- I don't tweet.
- I've never been on MySpace. ()f course not, I'm an adult.)
- Dress, in general. I definitely have more of a classic style, now. I throw in a few trendy pieces each season, but for all my big-ticket items I go classic.

Trends I STARTED, or at least rocked before anyone else knew about them:
- Birkenstocks. My parents wore Birks to sleepover camp when they were young, and then I wore them to that same sleepover camp when I was young, and never stopped. And I still wear them today, thankyouverymuch.
- iPod. My mom got her iPod in 2002 for Chanukah, and when she brought it home I was fascinated. I had never seen it before, or heard of it, and I couldn't believe she spent $500 on it. (It was a 30 gig.) The next day my sister and I went out and bought ones for ourselves. When I brought it to work everyone was mesmerized and my coworkers spent the day borrowing it and passing it on to each other. I still have that same iPod, my students call it "the brick" because it's much larger than today's iPods.
- Tongue ring. I had my tongue pierced in high school, at which point all of my snotty friends said I looked like white trash. (Can't totally blame them, but we were a bunch of stuck-up suburbanites, that was the best insult they could think of.) Within four years nearly all of them had gone through the tongue-piercing trend, themselves. It must have been a see-I'm-not-a-totally-lame-suburban-kid-after-all rebellion type thing.
