What to do with a ring- I really don't care for it

So, backstory - a number of years ago I had a version of the "Gilda" ring made with French cut rubies and a good sized old mine diamond. I liked it for a time, but then I felt it was just too much. I tried to sell it through Gilded Lane and now, it's been on consignment in Savannah for probably 1.5 years?

It's this one. Beautifully made.

I am going to Savannah in June. I am wondering if I should pull it. To be clear, I don't like the ring. Not the vendors fault. I really have shifted to simpler settings, and with taking public transportation daily, I know I won't wear it. It is just too much for me and I don't have a lifestyle where we go and do things where I'd wear it.

So, should I take it apart and reset it? Or just leave it sit and hope it sells?

For reference, I was thinking about some sort of solitaire setting but with my commute, I don't even know that I'd ever wear it. It's 2.54 for the stone. I know many here would say wear it and it's fine, but I wonder if I'd wear it. I have a 3 carat old mine in a beautiful CvB setting that I haven't touched for 3 years, because it doesn't fit my lifestyle. Thoughts?

Attached is a setting I saw that was pretty that caught my eye.

Waiting years for a sale is too long. Either they are not marketing it well enough or the price is too high. Maybe a little of both. It's a special piece, and sure, the market is going to be niche. But still...

Have they reported any interested customers or had any offers? Have they asked you about reducing the price?
I would give them a notice that you are planning to pull it and go elsewhere. That might give them some urgency.

Finding the right online forum to post it in will give you better exposure and to a new set of prospective buyers. The photos of the project will add a lot of interest.

Good luck!

Here's what I would do in your situation:
  1. yes, follow through on selling it - because you're not wearing it, don't like it, you already have other rings you don't wear
  2. pull it from consignment
  3. have David Klass pull the diamond & find (and set) a beautiful Turquoise cabochon that fits/can be cut to fit [I suggest DK to limit your costs - generally I find Sako's pricing exponentially higher than DK's - YMMV]
  4. list that Ruby/Turquoise ring
  5. separately list the loose Diamond

I think pulling the stone and listing that separately, as Mary says, is a good idea even if you don’t reuse the setting right away.

I would be tempted to contact Sin City to list it. She normally does not do consignments, but sometimes she makes exceptions and maybe she would. Her stuff tends to go quickly, though the margins might not be what you want. It’s worth a try to contact.

Maybe convert to a pendant? It would be gorgeous that way.

You know, I actually thought of that a while ago. I was looking at the advice below to remove the stone and sell it loose, and that's not a bad idea either. I really don't know what the stone would actually go for price wise.

There is part of me that would like to hoard it because I know I probably couldn't replace it for what I bought the stone for originally.

Maybe a moonstone cab in the setting and do a pendant? And keep the diamond loose until I know what to do?

Thanks, I agree that Sako is a lot higher. I would probably have David do this work. I do think the setting maybe could be repurposed into a pendant, and it's possible I'd wear that.

Maybe the direction I should go is picking up the ring, send it to David, get a moonstone for the center, have it converted to a pendant and hold on to the diamond until I determine if I want to sell it or not. My biggest concern is that old mine cuts are hard to find, and I know that I couldn't replace it for the cost.

I'm really not up to date on the loose diamond market anymore.

I think a moonstone would be stunning in that setting. I have always admired that ring and wish you could love it as-is (or wish I could buy it!), but of course it isn't that easy!

I am very much out of the loop on what loose prices are for stones. I deleted Instagram and I have not looked at stone prices in a long time!

Maybe the conversion is the first step. I think a large part of my problem with recouping cost is going to be that that was a very expensive setting. I don't know that someone else would want to pay anywhere near what the cost was, so maybe repurpose is better. If I do a pendant, with a moonstone, I think it's possible I'd wear that.

I actually have contemplated getting rid of the three carat old mine I have in the CVB setting, because I do not wear it and it's just too large for my lifestyle. Public transportation, working for the military, etc., isn't a big "bling" recipe. My doubt there is it's super pretty and I know if I change my mind, I can't replace it at the cost and I would never spend the money on it now.

yes! Or wear it with the diamond in the pendant? Could try it out and see how you like it. It would be killler.

My inclination is to not worry about recouping what you paid for the setting and just find a path forward that feels good. With the setting, repurpose or sell as you like. Sell the setting for whatever it will move for, set with a moonstone perhaps. But keep the diamond! Unless you need the money those things down growing trees. I’m sure you can envision a way to enjoy it… pendant, bracelet…

I have decided what to do with the diamond!

I have a lose sapphire that is 8.5 x 6.5 ish. I actually wear the moi et toi CvB made me with a pear and criss cut diamond.

So... I'm going to use the 2.54 diamond and the sapphire to do a moi et toi. This is the ring that I wear a lot! So, pendant with moonstone for the ring, scrap the band, and do a moi et toi. The sapphire is below - the blue- for this project. The yellow is part of a pair.

Looks like a great project!

I like it!

I wonder if you want to convert it to a pendant with the diamond first to see if you enjoy it that way?

I thought about it. But, I normally like a diamond where I can see it! I won't be able to see the pendant, so I think the moi et toi is a good use.

I have worn that moi et toi a ton and even have forgotten it's on. It's super comfortable. I think I will have CvB just do another with little changes. The one I have has little snowflakes on the band, but maybe this one could be little flowers. I love the gallery on my current ring so I don't think I'd change it.

I would have said this too before getting my pendant but now I love it and changed my mind. I love seeing in in the mirror and knowing its there throughotu the day.

But a toi et moi is also lovely.

How about this:

1. Get the pice back
2. Make it into a pendant. The diamond center is nice and use the green stones (emeralds?) and add others to make a design of your liking.
Like this but a pendant….

My ring has custom cut French cut rubies, so I don't want to take those apart!

I don't think I'd enjoy a large diamond pendant, because I can't see if. But I'd be fine with making it a moonstone cab, opal or something like that. I like a diamond where I can see it!

Her ring has rubies. Photos in her original post.

I looked at first post of OP, stones are green in my photo, how about yours?

The inspiration ring was an emerald halo. I had mine made with French cut rubies. Photos of my ring are in the full post.

When I said original post, I meant the post she made when she first had the ring made. It shows the inspo ring, (green) and the ring she had made (red). It was a bit confusing at first, I agree.

You could also try to sell the setting alone. It could be that the cost of mined diamond + setting was too much for some but they wouldn't mind it with a lab diamond. Just saying. There could be interested parties out there. ;-)

I couldn't find pricing for it anywhere on your preloved thread so I have no idea if pricing was part of why it wouldn't sell. But selling mined diamonds secondhand appears to be a tough market right now.
