I have done some research on diamonds, but I am still not very knowledgeable.

I am going to a few different jewelers tomorrow and looking at some diamonds.

I know that the table, crown, pavillion, and depth are important to tell whether or not the stone is cut well. Is there certain ranges I should be looking at for those things for a diamond between 1.75 ct to 2.00 ct?

What questions should I ask?

Any suggestions would be great. Thank you!

Hi FL, here are the ranges for an ideal cut. Some jewelers won''t have the info on the stone and I run in to sales people who confuse cut with shape. I would pick cut first then make sure it''s eye clean; every thing else is a personal preference. Have fun shopping.

Total Depth between 59 - 61.8%
Table diameter: 54 - 56%
Crown angle: 34.3 - 34.8 degrees
Pavilion angle: 40.5 - 40.9 degrees
Girdle: thin, thin to medium, medium (preferably faceted or polished)
Culet: GIA none or AGS pointed
Polish: GIA Excellent or AGS Ideal
Symmetry: GIA Excellent or AGS Ideal

You can certainly use parameters to screen diamonds, espcially ones over the Internet that you can''t see in person, but it is far more important to attempt to develop an aesthetic eye for what constitutes a beatiful diamond. Your eyes are pretty amazing things and you can discern a thing of beauty with just a little training and looking. Let a jeweler guide you by describing what the features are among the diamonds they have to show you. have them show you a less well cut stone and a superior cut stone. Make close comparisons and learn how to see the details where beauty lies.

Unless you are an engineer who bases beauty on numbers, then your eyes and some training in how to see properly will do very well to help you.

Thanks you guys. I am heading out now. I am hoping I am able to see lots. Wish me luck I find something!
