It''s evil. Stay away from it. Same with vegemite.

It''s yeast extract. I''ve tasted vegemite (but did it the "wrong" way by sticking my finger in it). Imagine soy sauce highly concetrated into a paste. That''s kind of what it tastes like to me.

Every time I see someone post "marmite" or "vegemite" I think of the Lucy episode with "Vitameatavegamin"!

It''s salty and sticky and altogether gross. People who like it spread it on toast, with butter, and sometimes make sandwiches with it and cheese. It''s supposedly got vitamins in it, so people sometimes feed it to their kids (most of the people I know who like it grew up on it), but there''s nothing healthy about it to me. Bleck.

Marmite is AWESOME!

I love it. it''s a real love/hate thing. There is no inbetween.

I was never a fan of it until about 3 years ago. It''s very nice on toast. I got hooked on it working at a school...we used to feed the boys toast mid morning as a reward if they were good! (I was working in a school for pupils with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties)

Marmite is yummy! There is nothing better to put on toast.
At least try it once, if you can get hold of it.

You can usually find it at World Market in the food section.

Marmite and vegemite are AMAZING - I''d describe it as a salty and slightly bitter spread. YUM!

I just found www.marmite.com. It''s pretty funny. I also googled reviews of marmite and the consensus is "if you''re British you may love it" otherwise AVOID it! It''s supposed to have a naturally meaty flavor that is produced by the yeast.

From what I''ve read, use sparingly. I would try it if I could find it.

I''m so cravng some marmite now and for all of you who put it in the same sentence as vegemite, shame on you (j/k) haha. Vegemite has nothing on marmite!

I think this has a lot to do with the fact that I was raised by a kiwi and grew up on marmite and cheese. Most people from the UK like it too and aussies like their vegemite.

We got fully acquainted with Marmite / Vegemite / Promite and the like on our honeymoon (New Zealand) because we stayed at a lot of B&Bs. We got a rundown on all those spreads from each B&B owner over breakfast... everyone has their favorite, and it''s a regional thing, too.

One person said we were trying it all wrong... we had to spread a tiny thin layer on top of a thick layer of butter on toast. Seriously?? You need to dilute it with WAY more butter than I would ever eat on its own?

TGal is spot on with the soy sauce spread comment.

Anyway, I have a friend who grew up in NZ and is forever hopelessly in love with Vegemite. I know many love it, but I just don''t get it!

I don''t love it on bread actually, but it''s great spread on crackers with a sliver of tasty cheese on top. No butter though, I don''t like the greasy butter/vegemite combination.

I used to bring it to my relatives in the US, but now I think it is fairly widely available there.

firstly, dont bother about marmite, vegemite or promite (the last of the three) if you dont like 'very salty'.

marmite and vegemite are both yeast extracts (vegetarian), tho marmite is slightly sweeter.
promite is beef extract, but the same sort of idea.
marmite was developed in england, and vegemite and promite came out of australia.

IF you're going to try it, don't make the mistake of spreading it on like jam/preserves/honey/nutella/etcetc. and ALWAYS use is over butter. you would put less vegemite/promite/marmite on the toast than butter, for example. use is VERY sparingly - try half a teaspoon for a whole slice of bread initially and go from there if you like it.

most people who like salty food enjoy these spreads if they're done right - but too much is the common mistake, and too much of these spreads = inedible.

Marmite = not as good a version of vegimite as is promite

I still like marmite and promite but vegimite is better

, as other have said it is salty you spread it thinly on toast with a loads of melted butter.
