I was at the beach last summer and noticed a girl wearing an engagement ring with a diamond cut in a shape i''ve never seen before. I''ve been trying to figure out what cut this could be. The only thing I''ve seen on here that compares to the shape is that of an OEC. Let me describe it to you:
it was kinda flat and cut almost like a round cut diamond. it was big but not deep.

Please help me figure this one out. It''s been driving me crazy since July. TIA!!

The outline of the diamond is round?
The top of the diamond is flat looking (no built-up/high crown)?
Small sparkles or big flashes of fire/white light?

You are getting me curious.

Could it be a mine cut or rose cut?

Old Mine cuts and OECs are pretty deep and top heavy too, ie not flat so I doubt it. I have no idea about rose cuts.

are you sure it was a diamond and not some other type of stone?

it was definitely a diamond. i''ll explain...she had gotten in the water with her husband and when she came back she couldn''t find it. me and my fiance helped her dig through the sand while she cried and then we finally found it. i guess she had taken it off to put on some lotion very early in the day, probably laid it on her chair, forgot about it, swam, came back and noticed she wasn''t wearing it. either way she balled her eyes out until we found it so i know it was real. (plus her husband kept reassuring her by saying "it''s insured" over and over again).

to answer your questions:
the diamond was almost oval looking but laying long ways...not oval straight up and down, but oval side to side. (if that makes sense).

it seemed pretty flat but i didn''t get a chance to hold it and look it over very well. it was in a pave band. very plain and beautiful.

it was extremely clear. that''s what i noticed most about it. not extremely flashy but we left right before it started raining so it could of been in the right light.

ovals can be set ew or ns... my bet is it was an oval - they tend to be pretty flat/shallow.. ad she set it east west... I''ll see if I cn find an east west oval :_

It sounds like a rose cut to me... I happen to love, love, love rose cuts!!

I just saw a 2.5ct rose cut at Martin Katz - it had a micropave halo and delicate micropave sides. It was incredible. Ahhh... wish I could find a pic online!

My stone happens to be an OEC - but it''s not flat. OECs tend to be a bit fatter. Mine has a bulging belly :)

Now I want to know what it is too!

Could be a rose cut or a more shallow oval set east to west...sounds gorgeous and I am so glad you helped her find her ring!

but don''t rose cuts have a pointy bit where the table usually is?

sounds like a cushion to me...maybe more of a rectangle shape cushion

they might, indie, I have earrings with rose cuts and I remember thinking it looked like the diamond was upside down!

I''ve been thinking this all along myself... I don''t know how it could be, unless it''s upside down with the facets underneath and a huge blank table.... but I still think if she thought it looked like an oval cut but going the other way it probably was an oval cut and it didn''t register as such because she''d never seen it in that context. coulda been a cushion though too....
