what should I look for?

When I'm looking at gem stones what should I be looking for? The only thing I can tell by looking at one is if it's pretty or not... I have no idea what is good and what is bad... There is a gem show coming up in my town in a few months and I would like to start edcuating myself enough to purchase something.

I would second what both previous posters have said, and also trust your taste. Everyone likes different stones, different colors, different styles (as is clear from the posts on this site every day). The best thing you can do, is get what you like, knowing that your tastes may change over time...and that's what places like ebay and Diamond Bistro are for!

The easy answer is probably something that you like, in your price range, that's been certified as genuine
